MDC (Millions of Dead Cops) is an American hardcore punk band formed in Austin, Texas in 1979. The band were subsequently based in San Francisco, California, and are currently based in Portland, Oregon. MDC originally formed as The Stains before changing their name. Playing hyper-speed punk rock associated with far left sociopolitical issues has earned the band close association with Jello Biafra and the Dead Kennedys, as well as numerous other US punk bands of the early eighties. The band was also unique in frequently changing their name to a different initialism of MDC with every new record released. MDC's initial run ended in 1995, and the band spent five years on hiatus before returning in 2000 with new members.
Let's continue with another video of a great San Francisco hardcore band. We just heard Crucifix's monster album Dehumanization and saw some live songs by them in 1984. Now here's MDC, a very popular band back in the day.
MDC actually appeared on the cover of the very first issue of Maximum Rock and Roll magazine. Charismatic singer Dave Dictor grew up on Long Island, I believe, and the band formed in Austin Texas before locating to San Francisco. The MDC in the beginning stood for millions of dead cops, so you can guess correctly that many of their songs were political and socially concerned. You might also guess that touring across the country in an old beat up van and being stopped by cops would not exactly be a day in the country. " Well now boys, why don't you tell us what your band's initials stand for."
I met them once at a vegetarian restaurant here in New York City and they invited me to hang out in their van parked outside. They were very down to earth without any rock star attitudes. The guitarist Ron Posner told me they visited California the first time and heard everyone playing fast. "What a gas," he said. Then THEY started playing hardcore. By far the best output of the band was when Posner was playing with them and he was still in the band when this video was shot.
Their debut album Millions Of Dead Cops (1982) is one of the great American hardcore albums and should be heard by anyone interested in punk music. (On a personal note, I am against all killing, including killing of animals.)
