- The Jedi are NOT what you think they are... This video analyzes one of the common misconceptions about the Jedi and the Sith. It's something that many Star Wars fans tend to get wrong. What is it? The Jedi having a sixth sense through the Force, makes them acutely aware of the threats approaching them. With better situational awareness, is attacking first really frowned upon, when you already for-see the attack is coming. Because of this extra sensory perception, Sith can't adopt predatory style attacks such as stealth, surprise and speed attacks that would be considered a first strike on Jedi, so they may actually be trained to open with a focused position.
If the first attack is made out of Fear or Anger, then it wouldn't be true Jedi move.

@@ericconnor3728 But they react differently to the force, and an opposing user. The Jedi sense a shadowy threat, the Sith sense an opportunity to reveal themselves.
The personality of their opponent is actually reflected in their first moves, its an odd dichotomy. The Sith will often be the calmest before the duel.
@eric it's the difference between predator and prey.. using the force to get the upper hand on your prey verse using the force to sense danger. Take Obi-Wan vs Darth Maul.. or Darth Maul Verse Quigon Jin: Obi-Wan attacked Maul 1st outta emotion.. which as a padawan he hasn't fully learned how not to do so. But was provoked by Maul when he Killed his master. Darth Maul stalked both him and his master across the globe.. even laying in wait a couple times for the right moment (Predator move).

I thought you implied that Sith were unable to make predictions. Of course they can but if the Jedi knows he/she is in danger, then that does not matter anymore for the beginning of the fight.
Your interpretation of the throne room scene from Jedi is ... odd. I always thought it was pretty clear from context that the Emperor was trying to goad Luke into killing him, and that's precisely what Luke intended to do when he reached for his saber. Vader then ignited his own saber to block Luke's strike -- which, again, was aimed at the Emperor. There's no "draw" there, Luke clearly lost his cool for a moment and fully intended to cut the Emperor into little pieces.
I think the better interpretation is the thought that for that moment Luke had briefly let himself over to the darkside so the point goes potentially to both.
Totally agree, the whole point of that action was that the Emperor was goading Luke into attempting to kill him, right from the outset, as he knew that such action would likely push him towards the dark side. He had obviously either planned ahead for Vader’s defence of Luke's strike, or he simply knew it would happen. Vader by this point knew he was a pawn in the Emperor's schemes, so resigned himself to simply protecting his master, as a good apprentice, but I'm straying here...
No offence, but yours is a bizarre interpretation of the scene. Luke wasn't attacking Vader, he was attempting to assassinate the Emperor. It still results in the Jedi striking first, though...
One mustn't overlook the rules of how a duel works. As an Order of swordsmen and women, Jedi Knights accept those rules of engagement. Which means that once the stage is set, it doesn't matter who strikes first. The inevitability of violence was already established and as Jedi their job is to end that conflict in the fastest, most efficient way possible.

It doesn matter at all, however, I keep fibding comments about how wrong we are for letting the Jedi attack first in our fan-films and live performance, so that gave me this idea. The movies definitely prove these people wrong

It is a fair analysis! However, what made you consider the attack over the activation of the lightsaber. In some cases the Sith have already shown their intention to attack. As a security guard, I know there are de-escalation skills, but if I were to pull out my telescopic baton it wouldn't matter much the state of mind of my interlocutor: he'd see it as a fighting sign! But, anyway, thanks for the cool video! I hope to see more like this! :D

Also, in many cases, the fighter that got attacked ignited his lightsaber first as a precaution... But it didn't help

I think by “attack first” something to note for the side of the Jedi is that typically the Sith will have done something drastic to put the Jedi in a tough situation. “Attack” doesn’t always mean swing your saber, it could be kidnapping the chancellor, or other such “attacks” against the jedi
Well there isn't much of that history behind most of our videos and people still say that the Jedi shouldn't attack first... Which isn't how they act in the movies at all
Pecisely! It's actually not all that complicated. In a(n oversimplified) way: Sith would provoke conflict, preferably physcal; while Jedi would try to resolve issues without confrontation.
But if all else fails and fighting is inevitable, physical combat only has one rule: Defeat your opponent!

Nice that you started making these types of videos. Well Idk if this is a one off thing or the start of new content, but I love your lightsaber work. Also does your online lightsaber classes have a limit
Thank you! No, it's not a one-off thing, we're gonna make more in the future for sure. Last year we released a video on Ahsoka vs Maul and the amazing people behind the scenes, that was the start. It's impossible to put out many action videos one after another, we'll never stop making those, but this type of content is something that takes places between the videos people know us for. I'm really glad you liked this on, it was a lot of work and I'm happy to finally have it released. We also have a few tutorials coming pretty soon (I hope), and a new cool action video is just around the corner.
We mostly do private lessons nowadays and there is no limit so far so email us if you want and we'll be happy to help!

1. I like the change in format of the videos, as before this, all the videos were just montages of crazy fast choreography, which got boring after a bit considering that those were the only videos. Definitely keep doing these!

Well, "from a certain point of view" the Jedi Path order them to act without any emotion, only with peace, but of course, in a very contradictive way, you must keep the peace by defending it. I think that the only way to do that is not only by balancing the Force, but also training yourself to see your real goal and do what you must without having any dark feeling, but a very focused mind.

The Yoda and Palp thing is actually a point for the Jedi.
I mean...Yoda ignited his lightsaber and jumped at Palp, who merely responded to this... if he wouldn't have moved his lightsaber up, Yoda would have most likely striked him down there.
I only looked at the attack as is, there's could be changes if we take the intention to attack into account, but it doesn't change the whole picture much

In ROTS, Obi-Wan and Yoda ignited their lightsabers first in their respective fights of duty to defend the peace.
I give the Jedi some slack on attacking the Sith first because you have to remember that, in the movie timeline at least, finding a Sith is an exceptionally rare thing. In the original trilogy the Jedi and Sith are all but dead, only the Empire remains and a few exiled survivors in isolation.... but even in the prequels, the Sith do not congregate and train in large numbers. There's only a few key players making plans and manipulating the force and power balance of the Galaxy as a whole from the shadows, taking care not to expose themselves or their plans to the Jedi.
So... when you're a Jedi and you see a dude rolling up on you in all black with a red saber drawn its kind of like bumping into an armed Nazi SS officer in the middle of 1950's Argentina... You know he's evil, you know he's about to kill you, and you do not hesitate.
That on top of the fact that I'd say 90% of the video's jedi focus is placed on young Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Luke, All of which are portrayed as young and aggressive.
I dare you to include the clone wars and rebels.
I wanted to, but it would probably take me a year and the point here was to include the purest form of canon there is i.e. the movies. These series may actually have a different bias... *thinks about Anakin in the Clone Wars* ...or maybe not
What I like about fantom menace is that you can see when the red thing is between qui gon and darth maul is that you can see that darth maul is using his anger to fight him and qui gon is just meditating. Also you can see that they pull out their lightsaber right before the shields go away because they can sense the future. Sorry for the bad explaining tho I'm not the best at english

This detail is also noticed in the clone wars cartoons as the Jedi most of the time do attack first. One must remember that Dooku and many jedi believed that they are warriors, not politicians. As a result, it doesn't matter who strikes first as long as one can triumph the other in the end. This is not the same for politicians as they have to plan their attacks carefully and as a result, start off defensively. A warrior doesn't care who starts the fight, they only care about who ends it.
Edit: More evidence of Jedi getting the first hit can be seen in the Clone Wars cartoons if one is really wanting to go that far.

We even did a little bit of that on stage (Kylo vs. Rey). But I'm not sure we will focus our effort in this direction. But never say never I guess

I appreciate the thought put into the video, but honestly I'd almost rather just count when the person activates their lightsaber, and it's almost always the Jedi that activate it first except in a few instances.
Doesn't it also depend on the Jedi Sabre style they are using.

Qui Gun Jinn really should have made it all the way to train Luke. He is by far my favorite. I’ve thought about trying this out but I have a lower spine injury and worry the movement might make the pain worse…. Not to mention can afford on of those sabers designed to do it.

In Attack of the Clones you gave a point to the Jedi during the Obi-Wan & Anakin vs Dooku, but showed a clip where Dooku attacked first and Kenobi deflecting it. Force Lightning. A pretty devastating one at that when the right person is using it.
Yeah, I thought that. I guess they only wanted to consider lightsaber duels, rather than any attack, which in all honesty, doesn't really make sense. Attacking and defending is the same, regardless of what implement is used. The Emperor attacks Mace Windu with force lightning, that he then blocks too.
There's a difference between being the attacker and striking first.
Obi-Wan drew his lightsaber first during his and Anakins duel on Mustafar.

when it comes to me I'd technically be a grey Jedi (meaning i Attack both Sith and Jedi Neutral basically) Mainly bc no matter wat i am defensive mainly so that i can see how my enemy attacks/fighting style and if i were to say favorite form of lightsaber It'd b the dual saber like Darth Mauls because not just is it great for defense but it also helps with crowd control if u have enough skill tho if i were to invent a lightsaber (like make any type) It'd b a dual one like Maul's BUT on both ends it's like Kylo Rens (meaning Cracked Crystal and the tri blade thingy) AND do u know the lightsaber from Jedi Fallen Order where the Kiber Crystal broke in half to where it was able to b disconnected into 2 lightsabers that would also be an attatchment to my lightsaber Just in case if stuff goes wrong (or if in case i just wanna train fr multiple fighting styles even tho that'd b difficult) but mainly bc in the Duel of Fates of the Phantom Menace where Obi Wan broke Darth Maul's it was well broken he wouldn't b able to just snap it back on that is wat i meant by stuff goes wrong bc in this scenario I'm a Jedi (Grey) with the force meaning i could fight with the singular lightsaber as i use the force to pull the other one to my hands i mean since it cut it wouldn't snap on but it wouldn't be that damaged if so and it'd b to where that side still works meaning i have 2 singular lightsabers with the tri-blade like Kylo Ren's Saber so not just is it practical for fighting style but it's practical for if stuff goes wrong and my saber is sliced in half like Maul's saber

I can share a little bit on this topic. I was very interested in Buddhism in one point of my life. You can relate Jedi to a Buddhists, they have a lot in common in their morale. So I was wondering about "according to buddhism, if someone attack me, should I just like stand and take the hits and do nothing because of my understanding?" I found a video on youtube where the same question was asked to a very experienced buddhist monk, which lived almost all his life according to buddhism.. He answered the question something like this "There was a buddhist village in Philiphine and it was attacked from time to time by their neighbours for goodness seeking... They would attack them from time to time and buddhists do nothing, just accepted it how it is.. But once they took sticks and defended themselfs."
Now about my personal view of this, if the fight can be avoided - avoid it. But if someone is putting your life into danger, or for example they want to steal something from you what you need and that is important for you function good for your life - defended it. Remember that if you are dead, harmed or without instruments you need to perfom your life how you need - you will not be able to help and do good to other around you about who you care.
In obi wan vs Dart vAder spin off - Obi wan went in to full mode of his prime when he remembered that he is fighting not only for himself, but for Anakins kids. Thats why if you are consider yourself as englightened even person, whos against pain, sometimes you need to inflict pain for the better good.
And if we would take it to real life, basic example.. Germany..ww2.. If no one would stand up against germans and just do nothing because they would understand germans and would not want to increase their pain further - then who knows if today we would be alive as not germans. Fight for protection - is good. This is my opinon.
This is neglecting the fact that the jedi as seen in the prequels are the jedi at their most corrupt. The jedi have become attached to the Republic, and with that attachment they have become fearful, dogmatic, and hypocritical.
Now, that's not to say we should entirely trust Yoda in Empire, either. Yoda and Obi Wan are very clearly trying to control Luke, and Yoda claiming that the force is only for knowledge and defence is pretty obviously something he says to rein Luke in.
I think our best evidence for the claim that jedi shouldn't strike first comes from Return of the Jedi. The emperor specifically goads Luke into striking first. On the other hand, Luke's final victory comes from refusing to use his lightsaber. I think that's a pretty strong indication of whether or not the jedi should strike first.

They do it for their own self preservation... Not for teh republic... They shown that multiple times by refusing to act in certain cicumstances. Too "great a risk" .... is how many padawans have been turned down by many a Jedi Masters when facing true unjustice... concern for the republic that is? No... self preservation... Selfishness... Evil...They are the worst kind of evil there are.. The ones who ACT like they are doing it for the good. Like.... politicians.. Making a sacrifice is never "good" ... It's always wrong/evil... The fact you need to excuse it when doing it proves that its wrong....

doesnt matter if they strike first. What would you do if you were a jedi and came across one of the people responsible for blowing up planets and ruling by fear? Id strike first every time. Hell, id use gadgets like the mandorlians/bounty hunters as well as the force to have even more of an advantage.

In the grand scheme of things - yes. But this video addressed a very specific point, many people seemed disturbed by the fact that the Jedi attack the Sith first in several of our videos, that's it. And the final part of the video deals with the whole message again

Here's the deal. By the time these duels start, there has already been so much that has happened and so much evil that it doesn't matter if the Jedi engages first. There is also going to be a battle no matter who strikes first. I would say that it makes sense if the Jedi engages first because they are the justice system for these other people who kill innocents and cause devastation to the galaxy...
The jedi realy only fight study and teach, or protect. So they act appropriately in each individual action .

I think it still holds true that Jedi don’t attack first…for some temples. Each temple can be very different from the others. Granted I am coming from an old republic standpoint. I think some temples are definitely more “head cannon” of how we see Jedi as the good guys. But other groups of Jedi would hunt and attack any Sith or Bogan force user because the Darkside had to be destroyed at all costs. It definitely adds more interest and Dynamics to otherwise boringly straightforward world building. Imagine - Sith who are cruel and psychotic, and Sith who are reasonable. Jedi who are trustworthy, honorable and fundamentally good as well as Jedi who are judgmental, and have extreme bias. But even in that world building view, the biased Jedi would still be good allies as long as you were not Sith or a Darkside force user. As a writer of fan fiction It’s my favorite head cannon for world building.
In the war, the good guys are those who win the war

In his eyes, Palpatine is the hero and the jedi are the evil force he must defeat.
The jedi want to perform their task and get rid of the sith, no matter the cost. As bloodthirsty the sith seem, the jedi are equally capable of bloodshed if they deem it necessary.
This is literally what the lightsaber colors mean.
Тема ролика совместно с первыми минутами показались мне сомнительными ибо в сражениях, где джедай и ситх встретились явно не сказки на ночь друг другу почитать, первым нападает самый решительно настроенный. Ибо нападение неизбежно. И иногда ударить первыми, значит предотвратить большие потерь, чем если позволить напасть врагу первым. Но услышав в конце пояснение, что это едва ли причина их осуждать, это растопило моё опасение на этот счёт. Конечно, в пылу битвы меньшинство готово действовать с холодным рассудком. И это похоже, что нормально. Но нет предела совершенству - всегда есть к чему стремиться.

Вы абсолютно правы, но прикол в том, что мысль, высказанная в видео, вообще ни разу не противоречит вашей, а как раз наоборот.
В самом начале видео я говорю о том, что комментарии типа "почему в вашем видео/файт-фильме джедай атакует первым" разбиваются вдребезги о тот факт, что в фильмах это происходило постоянно.

I mean, being attacked with a light saber first is not something a Jedi should wait for. The Sith manipulate through fear and influence like Palpatine did for years during the clone wars. The Jedi were already under attack even though it wasn’t physical violence at first.
"Jedi don't attack first" doesn't count against the Sith, obviously. Especially if they know they are evil without a doubt. Only when they see that a Sith's allegiance wavers, they might reconsider attacking him/her.

There is such thing as being a counter puncher in martial arts for example, I'm sure it transcends here as well
