Random donor platelet (RDP): A platelet unit prepared from a single whole blood unit (350 ml/450 ml). It can be either in the form of buffy coat-reduced platelet concentrate (BC-PC) or platelet-rich plasma (PRP).
Platelet concentrates are the most perishable blood component because they are stored at room temperature, which has an associated risk of bacterial growth, particularly beyond the shelf-life of 5 days.
