- Snowstorm Camping in a Canvas Wall Tent with my Husky!
This was to be my last overnight trip of the season as far as winter camping goes. The spring melt is now on and within the next month the forest will transform and a world of green will be exposed.
This trip took place on crown land (public land), adjacent to Woodland Caribou Provincial Park in Northern Ontario. Temps rose quite a bit posing challenging , sweaty conditions before dumping a large amount of snow on my overnight. Not what I had planned for, but you've just got to laugh and roll with it.
This was also my first overnight test with the Snowtrekker 9' x 11.5' Basecamp wall tent and Gstove XL combination. Both performed very well and I go through my honest thoughts on this gear during the video.
Thanks for watching!

An awesome end to the winter camping season!
Too..many..ads..
I love Quito!
Love your videos my friend! I’m looking forward to your 2020 winter videos if you make some. Did you get your additional Gstove components that were sent to you? 😉
I really enjoyed the vid. For me, it was a remanence of 20 years in Alaska and my beloved Malamute dog, Wolf. I am right now working on my set up, g-stove XL, and modified polish lavvu. I am back in southern Colorado where I was born and too hot right now to actually use the stove inside my tent. But this was a blast of the past!
I have been looking at many winter hot tenting options for the past two weeks. I've spoken to many people of which several who have different setups - Snowtrekker, Atuk, Esker, Bereg, White Duck, Avalon, Cabelas, and more. Also, watched countless UA-cam videos on the use of the above brand seeing pros and cons. You, my friend, are the first to actually show and speak about the trials and delights of setting up solo - start to finish - of a Snowtrekker tent. Very helpful to me in deciding which setup I would purchase. Thank you so much for your amazing efforts. Happy tenting to you and your sweet companion. Cheers!
Love your dog. Always follow your heart. And enjoy nature
Awesome! I just picked up a winner well woodlander size medium stove. Now to pick a good tent. I have an all black German Shepherd names koda. He’s a beautiful loyal pup. Can’t wait to do this!!
Hey there, new to your channel, but I'm enjoying it, great video! oh of course remember Bob Ross... what a guy... loved his paintings!
wow how could not ask for a better time, a man and his dog howling together, sharing diner and sleeping out in a tent, what more could one ask for, excellent video really enjoyed watching
Thanks for the kind words Craig.....you just put this all into perspective. Thank you
I think this was one of your best vids, you and Kito looked to being having such a good time
another fantastic video just like the rest,, thank you very much for the tips and most of all for taking us with you on these off season months when work prevents so many of us from hitting the northern woods ,, cant wait for vacation time to start heading up to elk lake area again...... keep up the great videos !!!!!!
Great to see you and your lovely dog out adventuring. My young dog when nuts when she was howling at the wolves!! Running round and then spotted her on the screen!!! I need to send you a photo 😁
Hi Sally, Lol, so did Kito when I was editing this hahaha. Gotta love dogs!
screw the trolls - your dog - you call her whatever you want. Such a beautiful dog. Now to the video - awesome - can't believe how much snow you still have. God bless and take care.
Haha, I know, I know....i was making light of it. Still loads of snow. Enjoy the video, let me know what you think!
Keto is a beautiful dog. What a gift. She makes me miss my Casey girl. Keto wants a cushy sleep topper too! 🤣
Dude. Just found your channel. How have I not heard of you?
Great videos bro. Great footage
Dog sure makes its self at home love it
Nice set-up, looks comfortable, relaxing, peaceful & the portable lights were a nice touch. Oh yeah Keto awesome 👍🐕
Thanks RD. It's an awesome tent and stove combo, very impressed. We've been using the Snowtrekker tents for years and they've always performed well. Thanks for watching.
i think she might be your dog, love the way you share the food. Shes your dog, shes your buddy she is your companion
Just came across you your channel, its awesome, ignore the Nay Sayers, i don't think people understand how much time it takes to put these together, especially in the field, Thank you for your content.
I learned so much from watching this. Thanks for posting! Also I must say I love how wonderful you are to your dog. I love mine the same way❤
Hey Harlan, amazing tent and stove... Great series and looking forward to spring.... Cheers
Thanks for watching Jim.
Hey fellow Canadian , Hi From London, Ontario .... Great video , love it long fun and cozy with the warm stove nice lights to light up your evening and your woof to cuddle up with .. I love the G-stove..
As for your dog it's your dog call her what ever you want to my woof, my dog, Keto .. :) Love to see more Videos of the comfy cozy snow hot tent camping .. Thank you for bringing us along for the adventure !
Information never too old. Thanks for sharing.
Love your video and Keto
that's a nice tent an set up you have, keep up the adventures I love too watch them
Like a film! Loved it. We are doing similar with a 60 Min video building a deck for our wall tent
I can't stop laughing at the snow shoes.
Harlan, disconnect the lower segment of each of the four support poles when setting up. It makes it easier to throw the tent over the frame. After the canvas is over the frame, reattach the bottom segments.
Bhahaha....are you calling me short? Lol
@@solotripper As long as your feet touch the ground, you're good!
lol@@Snowlady99
That’s what I do and it is a lot easier and easy on the poles
here's a another idea you could always stick 1 of those lites thru your vent hole above the peak of your door that way you will have lite if or when you go outside at night
Thanks for sharing an i just love your dog she is precious an Beautiful an u can see she adores u .
What am I missing, three side pass thru, impossible ,but four, no problems, and now a clip, so much better than paracord, keep them sponsors happy.
Thanks for the good video. That's a really smart tent design. I used to feed my dog human food, until I learned that her health was paying dearly for my mistake. It turns out that human food over time takes a harsh toll on their health, as their digestive systems, organs, and bone joints are not designed to tolerate human foods. Ask your veterinarian. Thanks again for the video.
Nice cinematography!
New subscriber. Just wanted to say great videos and I've never ever had an issue with my gstove. I would contact them if you haven't already it's the best stove I've used in 20 years and absolutely love it. I use a luxe tent but that ST tent you are using has me considering a second tent purchase for bringing the family.. glad I found your channel !!! I see some couch potato haters commenting lol. screw'em.
Try putting waterproof tape over the top of your modification, to stop all the snow coming in.
I really like that Sherpa lined vest you have. I need to find one of those
Another great video brother! Can’t wait to get out there with you!
Thanks Nick, summer gathering?
Let’s do it!!
Try to get the Airflow controler pipe, ande there´re some 45 and 90 degree pipe adapters. And you can get higher legs for the Gstove. Greetings from Germany.
First time i see snowshoes with 1" of snow , and inside the tent lol
Why didn't you buy a tent with a floor in it instead of dragging pine branches in? When the snow melts be cause of the stove you and up with a big mud puddle .
I like the stove
good job---bloody good job
Save a couple of those Moosehead cans to support your stovepipe on a forked stick outside.
Great vid. And awesome dog. Dogs can be better to be with than most humans! Lol
100% agree. Thanks for watching
Great vid my dude. Subbed. Keep the vids coming
enjoyed your video man, well done. been debating getting one of these for the adirondacks.
Look like you need a silky saw
youre dog is awesome ! nice video dude :)
Love your dog is a good buddy all the time especially in the wilderness
Like your show !
What kind of lights were you using?
good guard dog.
Great vid, O with that sausage throw in a few beans a lil tomato sauce a lil corn, mushrooms and few peppers with a garlic bread and kaboom...you got a nice chilly. TFS!
Thanks for watching Ted...gonna have to try that one on the next adventure come spring.
From Russia with respect, bro
Love the tent, g-stove looks good but stainless steel is heavier than steel. For packing on a sled there must be a steel stove which has great quality and a little lighter than the g-stove. Great video
Thanks Doug, I've looked around and haven;t found anything else yet other than 4 Dog but those are titanium and I can't afford them.
Run there's a woulf about to get you RUN!!
I love your dog she is so beautiful!!!
I hate to sound like a SRUB,but man, I'd love to buy that stove and tent. Being retired you have alot of time on your hands with no paper($$$$) When I was working,I had paper, but NO TIME.
I'll get it right one of these days.
Hey Gangster, thanks for checking this one out. Glad you like the tent / stove setup...I hear you!
Moosehead is my favorite lager
Love the longer length!
Hello Harlan in the snow. Spring has arrived the German Volcanic-Eifel.
The howling made me laugh. Because i have done the same as i had some Honeywine (Met) near a caravan parking with some dutch tourists sittin by camping furniture i front of their trailers. Uncertain about looking around (-;
"Good Path" from Lower Mountain Range the German Eifel. Alex
Hi Alex, thank you for your comment in for watching.
the only thing missing from your sausage meal is a nice bun or slice of bread that you can wipe out the pan getting all the wonderful sausage grease on it and eat it. yummy
And using a bit of grease as a fire starter.
love this video.
Watching your video from Mississippi & I love your dog & on that note; the person who said something about you calling your fur baby your dog, is she not your dog??? Absolutely got a laugh out of that.
Hello Your country is beautiful. I want my country to have some snow from Thailand.
Greetings and thanks for watching this one. Glad you enjoyed the snow.
If you check on eBay, you will find hanging lanterns powered by AAA lithium batteries or rechargeable 18650 lithium ion batteries which could supplement your lighting system. There are also small compact lightweight LED flashlights available which are very inexpensive. Good 18650 batteries run about $5 US apiece for Sanyo and Panasonic brands. Longer lasting than cheaper brands. Should weigh about 48-49 grams. Still work well below 0 degrees F.
Did you ever consider any of the stove offerings from Four Dog? I have their titanium ultralight 1 deluxe. I had a baffle added to it and I find it works well. I have a video about it on my channel. No issues with warping or the door not closing properly. It is a little pricey, but it is quite light for its size.
I would love to get into those stoves, however we have an average of 10 tents each year, so that would get too cost-prohibitive as they are very pricey. I hear really good things about them though
Great end of winter outing Harlan. Tent stove Kyto and some sausage. LOL. Good times. Hey Harlan, are you part Italian like me with all that sausage you eat?!?! Really enjoyed this video and thanks for sharing. ATB Mike. Cheers 🍻
Good evening Mike, glad you enjoyed the vid.
First time watching one of your vid's. I just have to say your furbaby is B E A U T I F U L!! Is she part wolf? Her one blue eye, thick coat, oh my gosh...
Awesome video! I have a question. What kind of boots are those and where did you get them? Thanks!
adamaj
I was thinking the same thing. They were the first thing I noticed! Love them! Are they Steigers from Ely MN?
@@msgottaneedtoknow These maybe? www.mukluks.com/Arctic/productinfo/AR+M/#.XeB9aS3Qirw
A great video 💕🎄
Cool!
bear : ohh !! a new tent let's check it out ( joke )
Just found your site and have subscribed. Love the honesty about the products, best that i have seen. I will be watching from now on!! I'm looking for a tent so in your opinion ,would a 9x11.5 be to big for a single most of the time (might be two once in awhile) Or would a 8 x 10 be better. Also i use a cot for sleeping. Thanks in advance
Hey Brian,
Thanks for checking this out! Glad you enjoyed my rambling. I like a big tent, even when solo but the smaller tents will setup A LOT quicker so I'd lean towards smaller but its' all about personal preference.
@@solotripper Thanks for the quick reply and answer. Much appreciated
Fruit of the Loom!
Great video. Great trip. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching
Hey Harlen love, love your videos. I fell in love with Woodland caribou through Joe Robinets videos. It may take me a couple of years to save up but I will differently be coming to the park. You have a very sweet dog. How old is she?
Hi Peggy, thanks so much for watching and the kind words. Glad to hear you found us through Joe...love working with him! Reach out to us when you're ready and we'll make it happen!
My dog, my wife, my kids they all have names. It's not claiming ownership. Some people are just assholes. Don't worry about what people say.
Haha. Exactly! Thanks for checking this one out
I FUCKIN LOVE YOUR DOG!!!! 😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️😁👍
Harlan; I have thought about your cold feet in winter and have a thought for you to consider. Cold feet are usually about damp socks contacting the feet. Why not try a sock liner that allows the feet to breath and not make direct contact with the skin? Just a thought...
Hi Ruck, I can try a sock liner for next winter and see what happens. Appreciate the suggestion. Any particular liner you recommend?
Light pair of wool. Then a plastic bag then a thick wool sock. Works great and I have sweaty feet
Haven't a clue, I now live on the island of Guam... I do know that Underarmor Heat Shirts are based on the principle that transferring body sweat from the skin to the outer clothing will keep you dry and cool. The same principle should apply to transferring sweat from the skin, through the inner sock, to the wool socks and keeping the feet dry. Check out some of the folks that do backpacking trips from the Mexican border to the Canadian border, they seem to know quite a bit about keeping their feet dry and free from blisters. Take care and stay safe out there...
@@solotripper Hi Harlan. Have you tried Alpaca wool boot liner inserts? It keeps you warm and wicks away moisture. Also, socks (wool or otherwise) retain some moisture. I have been trained by a survivalist to change into dry wool socks three times/day (morning, late afternoon, and just before bedtime) and that helps me keep dry and warm. Finally, dry out the boots and socks overhead on the guy line. Works great.
Awesome video.....nice dog. Good friends too huh. :-)
Thanks for watching.
How many persons can fit into that tent with or without the dog? Looking at purchasing one but not sure if to get the 9x11 or 10x13. Thanks
Nice vid. :=) ....Hmm.. am not having those issues on my gstove, got the same as you but with the glass window in the door
Hey like watching your videos. Have you looked into the g-stove airflow controller/damper.
47:21... “don’t forget about me”! Elsewhere... “always add your meat to a hot pan”! ;)
Oh she is never forgotten....spoiled that one
I like your shovel....it looks to be almost full size yet telescopic. Can you share any details about it?
Hi Alain, not sure the make but I purchased it from my Snowmobile dealer...most snowmobile dealers have telescopic shovels with a steel blade...this is key!!!!
Loved your video, looking to buy myself the same setup! Is that the regular size Gstove or is it the XL version?
It's the XLstove. thanks for watching.
It may be too early to be talking iceout but what is your gut telling you? Early? Normal? Or Late?
Hey Ian, my guy is telling me it's normal. I usually wait until the middle of April to get really picky with my predications though.
Have you considered first lay out the canvas, then go under the canvas and assemble the poles?
The G-stove has a damper available ya know.
So, where's the snowstorm!!!
nive video.greetings from germany
I enjoyed the video, up to your harvesting of live boughs and trees, just for recreational camping, even if it is allowed. The Forest Service here would raise total hell over that. Guess it's good you're not here. :-) Be safe.
Your dog is so beautiful
Hi. UA-cam brought me here. So My question is this... I have been drawn to the Winnerwell something or other, with the 3 spring loaded legs and the 2 glass sides. What are your thoughts?
Because with the stove you have in this video it looks like there are pieces that can get lost for locking the legs..
And great dog!! My 10 year old rescue Hound is laying here now :)
what are the odds i have exact mitts and vest as you and my sled is the same except it is the 600 ace lol
Haha. Crazy!
You you speed up the sawing scenes you'd look like a bad as human chainsaw 😎
Lol. An exhausted one.
I don't give a sh__ what that guy says. Your dog is well loved. Just look at him in the corner. Can't you get a damper to fit inside the pipe.
"I'm not a chef"... agreed. I feel bad for your dog...
Whats the name of the music in the start?
All too cool...what are your low temps now at your location? I remember the thaw now would be underway in James bay...i miss the cold.
Be safe
Andrew...from Newbrunswick
Hi Andew, things are warming up nicely now, but a few weeks back we were in a deep freeze. For over a month we had lows in the -35 and colder with highs in the low -20's....this trip was much, much warmer. Thanks for watching.
I recently read that dogs howl to get attention or when they're anxious. I can see why it might be fun but i wonder if you may be inadvertently making your dog worry about you 😂
I heard where you are that winter is not over. Great stove and you can’t beat those snowtrekkers. How do your mukluks stay dry in the wet melting snow. With my snowtrekker I have a very clear sheet of plastic to put over the enterance so it keeps heat in and I can still see out.
Hey Cliff, Thanks for watching. In the melting temperatures, the Mukluks suck...no way around it. The "waterproof" spray they sold me is not so waterproof. I didn't mind on this trip because the temps were really warm but it could be a problem if they plummeted. In the -30 temps we had all winter it's not a problem as everything is so dry.
Hey, Clifford. How do you secure the plastic sheet to stay over the entrance (placed on the outside is my guess)?
@@RosanneLoriMalowany I just use clips to attach to top and let it hang over door way. The clearer the better. I use clear table cloth plastic
