  • Snowstorm Camping in a Canvas Wall Tent with my Husky!
    This was to be my last overnight trip of the season as far as winter camping goes. The spring melt is now on and within the next month the forest will transform and a world of green will be exposed.
    This trip took place on crown land (public land), adjacent to Woodland Caribou Provincial Park in Northern Ontario. Temps rose quite a bit posing challenging , sweaty conditions before dumping a large amount of snow on my overnight. Not what I had planned for, but you've just got to laugh and roll with it.
    This was also my first overnight test with the Snowtrekker 9' x 11.5' Basecamp wall tent and Gstove XL combination. Both performed very well and I go through my honest thoughts on this gear during the video.
    Thanks for watching!

    I really enjoyed the vid. For me, it was a remanence of 20 years in Alaska and my beloved Malamute dog, Wolf. I am right now working on my set up, g-stove XL, and modified polish lavvu. I am back in southern Colorado where I was born and too hot right now to actually use the stove inside my tent. But this was a blast of the past!

    I have been looking at many winter hot tenting options for the past two weeks. I've spoken to many people of which several who have different setups - Snowtrekker, Atuk, Esker, Bereg, White Duck, Avalon, Cabelas, and more. Also, watched countless UA-cam videos on the use of the above brand seeing pros and cons. You, my friend, are the first to actually show and speak about the trials and delights of setting up solo - start to finish - of a Snowtrekker tent. Very helpful to me in deciding which setup I would purchase. Thank you so much for your amazing efforts. Happy tenting to you and your sweet companion. Cheers!

    Thanks for the good video. That's a really smart tent design. I used to feed my dog human food, until I learned that her health was paying dearly for my mistake. It turns out that human food over time takes a harsh toll on their health, as their digestive systems, organs, and bone joints are not designed to tolerate human foods. Ask your veterinarian. Thanks again for the video.

    If you check on eBay, you will find hanging lanterns powered by AAA lithium batteries or rechargeable 18650 lithium ion batteries which could supplement your lighting system. There are also small compact lightweight LED flashlights available which are very inexpensive. Good 18650 batteries run about $5 US apiece for Sanyo and Panasonic brands. Longer lasting than cheaper brands. Should weigh about 48-49 grams. Still work well below 0 degrees F.

    Did you ever consider any of the stove offerings from Four Dog? I have their titanium ultralight 1 deluxe. I had a baffle added to it and I find it works well. I have a video about it on my channel. No issues with warping or the door not closing properly. It is a little pricey, but it is quite light for its size.

    Harlan; I have thought about your cold feet in winter and have a thought for you to consider. Cold feet are usually about damp socks contacting the feet. Why not try a sock liner that allows the feet to breath and not make direct contact with the skin? Just a thought...

    • @solotripper

      Hi Ruck, I can try a sock liner for next winter and see what happens. Appreciate the suggestion. Any particular liner you recommend?

      Light pair of wool. Then a plastic bag then a thick wool sock. Works great and I have sweaty feet

    • @pleitrap7073
      @pleitrap7073 5 років тому

      Haven't a clue, I now live on the island of Guam... I do know that Underarmor Heat Shirts are based on the principle that transferring body sweat from the skin to the outer clothing will keep you dry and cool. The same principle should apply to transferring sweat from the skin, through the inner sock, to the wool socks and keeping the feet dry. Check out some of the folks that do backpacking trips from the Mexican border to the Canadian border, they seem to know quite a bit about keeping their feet dry and free from blisters. Take care and stay safe out there...

    • @RosanneLoriMalowany
      @RosanneLoriMalowany 2 роки тому

      @@solotripper Hi Harlan. Have you tried Alpaca wool boot liner inserts? It keeps you warm and wicks away moisture. Also, socks (wool or otherwise) retain some moisture. I have been trained by a survivalist to change into dry wool socks three times/day (morning, late afternoon, and just before bedtime) and that helps me keep dry and warm. Finally, dry out the boots and socks overhead on the guy line. Works great.

    Have you considered first lay out the canvas, then go under the canvas and assemble the poles?

    I enjoyed the video, up to your harvesting of live boughs and trees, just for recreational camping, even if it is allowed. The Forest Service here would raise total hell over that. Guess it's good you're not here. :-) Be safe.

    Hi. UA-cam brought me here. So My question is this... I have been drawn to the Winnerwell something or other, with the 3 spring loaded legs and the 2 glass sides. What are your thoughts?
    Because with the stove you have in this video it looks like there are pieces that can get lost for locking the legs..
    And great dog!! My 10 year old rescue Hound is laying here now :)

    I don't give a sh__ what that guy says. Your dog is well loved. Just look at him in the corner. Can't you get a damper to fit inside the pipe.

    All too cool...what are your low temps now at your location? I remember the thaw now would be underway in James bay...i miss the cold.

      Hi Andew, things are warming up nicely now, but a few weeks back we were in a deep freeze. For over a month we had lows in the -35 and colder with highs in the low -20's....this trip was much, much warmer. Thanks for watching.

    I recently read that dogs howl to get attention or when they're anxious. I can see why it might be fun but i wonder if you may be inadvertently making your dog worry about you 😂

    I heard where you are that winter is not over. Great stove and you can’t beat those snowtrekkers. How do your mukluks stay dry in the wet melting snow. With my snowtrekker I have a very clear sheet of plastic to put over the enterance so it keeps heat in and I can still see out.

      Hey Cliff, Thanks for watching. In the melting temperatures, the Mukluks suck...no way around it. The "waterproof" spray they sold me is not so waterproof. I didn't mind on this trip because the temps were really warm but it could be a problem if they plummeted. In the -30 temps we had all winter it's not a problem as everything is so dry.

      Hey, Clifford. How do you secure the plastic sheet to stay over the entrance (placed on the outside is my guess)?

    • @cliffordwright1603

      @@RosanneLoriMalowany I just use clips to attach to top and let it hang over door way. The clearer the better. I use clear table cloth plastic
