- If the power goes out, a long burning candle is essential. Making a crisco candle is a simple and budget friendly emergency candle. I took a 5 hour candle and show you how to turn it into a candle that will burn for 192 hours. We could lose power at any time. Knowing this simple survival skill will help prepare your home.

You have to try this! I am amazed at how well it works. After burning the candle 5 hours, the Crisco candle did not even hardly go down. If I was only using the taper candle, it would have burnt clear the the bottom.
I made a bunch of these in various sizes from the size you have in the video up to a very large jar I have 4 candles in. I tested several 4 candle jars and besides light it gives off a bit of heat and kept the room temp stable.
Good to know it gives off some heat too! Thank you

@@sandysteinbrook They say if you have to sleep in your car, say if your stranded in a blizzard, that burning one of those tiny tealight candles can keep you from freezing to death. So I imagine a large 4 wick candle can provide a good bit of heat for a house.
I'll scoop out middle of shortening, insert 3 tapered candles at length below top of can!
Do they smell funny?
I live in Kansas and we've had some extremely bitter temperatures along with freezing rain, snow, and wind over the last several days. I'm going to make a few of these, thanks for the great tutorial.
We have a polar blast happening this week where I live. We haven't lost power but I know that others have lost power in our area.
@@sandysteinbrook Stay safe, stay warm!
Brilliant ! So much easier than using vegetable OIL :-) . Make sure to keep the wick correctly trimmed so that it burns nicely and evenly with a small flame, and does not smoke.
Great tip!
You should melt it, pour into jar, chill until opaque, but soft enough to insert candle and solid enough to keep it upright. No bubbles, no messy jar.
Thank you for this tip.
I noticed Crisco has palm oil in it, which I shun. I bought some lard to bake cookies and compared it side by side to Crisco. The lard had one ingredient - lard. (correction it also has BHA hydrogenated lard, propyll gallate and ctric acid.) The Crisco is loaded with stuff they're not sure if it's in there or not. (May contain:. . .) The lard looks clear and smooth. The Crisco is cloudy and chunky. I feel like the body can digest lard better than Crisco. I am certain it is healthier than Crisco. And the cookies. . . They taste better. I know some doctors said don't use lard, but I think someone paid them to say it.
I agree. We have been told for decades that things like lard & butter are bad for us. Pushing the less healthy alternatives is good for the "healthcare" industrial complex but not so good for us. You are not the first person I've heard speak of how healthy it is to use lard, and the results are also better tasting. Examples are biscuits & pie crust.
So this video is good because it gives us a non-food use for the crisco we really don't want to use for cooking.
I agree! I would not consume Crisco. Crazy it is sold in the grocery section. Lard is such a better choice! My family that have always ate lard have also lived to a ripe old age.
Yes! A candle is a good use. It is crazy that crisco is sold in the grocery section to be consumed.
@@lauriemclean1131. Actually, hydrogenated lard is not so good. If you can’t render it yourself, try to find a butcher who sells it already rendered……just pig fat, nothing else! If they butcher, but don’t render the pig fat, ask if they’ll keep it for you and watch videos on how to render it. The fat can be frozen till you render it then you can jar it up and keep in the refrigerator or pantry. Hydrogenated anything isn’t all that good. Look for pure lard if you can.
I'm definitely listening after Hurricane Helen ...be safe
I'm watching because we are on the east coast of Florida where this incoming storm will make its exit. My prayers are with us all, especially the West Coast of Florida
Thanks for sharing! We lost power for a week due to problems with our fuse oxygen. This would have saved me so much money!
You're welcome. :) Now you can make this for future emergencies!
I have several boxes of long candles. Can I use those as well? What a great idea! I also love the idea of using clay pots as room warmers if power goes out! Just put it over a candle in a jar and place over candle with the hole of course on top. 😁
Long candles will definitely work
The half gallon jars by ball are good for the longer candle.
The wicks might be inadequate. You need thick wicks or else it burn up the wick and leave you with a jar of unburned fat.
Thanks for this amazing idea Sandy.
God Bless you from near Stonehenge, England.
I love it when someone tells me where you're from! Hello to you in England! These are great candles for emergency and I know it is always better to be ready for an emergency, even if it never happens, then to be in a situation and wish you had a long burning candle.
I am going to use pure carbonized felt for my wicks. Supposed to be everburning :) . Thanks for the video. Great job! .
Where can you find this kind of felt,, or do you make it yourself ??
While the Crisco is still warm could you put in cinnamon sticks and orange peel 7:21
sounds great
This is a great idea!! I made emergency candles for all my family for Christmas this year for there vehicles. I used soy wax and small paint cans, but this is awesome. Thank you for sharing.
What a smart idea to have an emergency candle in our vehicles! Thank you for sharing. I am going to look in to this. Where did you get small paint cans?
@@sandysteinbrook I got everything on Amazon. The paint cans, soy wax, wood wicks and small boxes of matches that I put in the top. I used soy wax because it doesn’t melt at a low temperature and burns for a long time.
@@cantoon833 can you provide a link?
@@chelms01 I don’t have a link, they are something I have just always made and had in my vehicles. I live in Wyoming and use to travel a lot by myself on road not well traveled. They are very easy to make. I used half pint paint cans, soy wax and wood wicks you can find all of the stuff on Amazon. If you have anymore questions just let me know.
Any commercial paint store,if making them multiple wicks 3-4 and include a book of matches or lighter
Great video and detailed explanations. THANK YOU!
You're welcome. I am glad it was helpful!
Hey, thank you Sandy for letting us viewers know about the butter at Aldis. I picked some up the next day and, wow, what a bargain.
You're welcome! I love to share. a good bargain!
Love this idea. I wonder if we could add Vanilla Extract to get a vanilla smell as it burns ?
I know this video has been out awhile but just a safety tip… Make sure you have a carbon monoxide detector when using any candles, especially for long periods of time.
Yes👍I have lots of this, can also make lots of baked goods. God Bless you for sharing this, might save some lives❤
Thank you for watching! I just think it is always smart to be prepared for an emergency. Having a long term source of light is important. Someone had commented and said if terra-cotta pots are added it could be a small source of heat also.
definitely a source of heat, many versions on youtube, take care@@sandysteinbrook
Great video. I will be making some. These will be great gifts for birthdays and Christmas. I will put a ribbon around jar. If I do not have enough shortening I know where get some
I am glad it was helpful. An emergency candle is always a nice gift since none of us ever know when a situation could happen that we would need it.
Great idea! I'm going to get the supplies to do this! Thank you, Sandy!
Yay! It is so easy and you're going to be amazed at how long it burns.
Wow! Good tips! Do more great tips to save us money 💲💲💲💲 like this was very good!!
I am glad it was helpful!
Great video! Thank you for this very important content. Ice/snow in the forecast for next week so this could help.
Thank you! We've been getting snow in Ohio. We never know if a power outage could happen, so it is best to always be prepared.
I'm going to be making my crisco candles within the next few weeks. I liked the mote for the purpose it served. My first choice would to be able to use the heat source I have in my home, but if there's a power outage, I'd prefer to have an option if you don't have a fireplace or a wood burning stove, or protect your home, do nothing, and risk freezing to death. I'd choose a small but comfortable size room to heat. I might even put a small flower pot burner in the bath tub, where it's safe from burning anything down (like what could catch fire in the bath tub?).
Very good ideas!! I have thought the same as you, if electric goes out, we can heat a smaller room.
Set the candle on a cast iron pan … you have a cast iron pan ….. don’t you ???
Take down the shower curtain b4
Thank you so much for sharing! I'm glad I came upon your page today.
Yes, crisco found out how to sell and make us eat candles! Clever.
Isn't it crazy that Crisco can be sold in the grocery section of the store to be consumed as food.
@@sandysteinbrook Yep!
Thank you for taking the time to share. Be well.
Thanks, you too!
Bless your heart great idea for power outages.
Yes! It's perfect for emergencies, which is what I am made it for. Now several long burning candles sit in my cabinet & if we ever need them, we have them.
Where can they be stored for long-term? I live in Florida can I store them out in my shed?
I have seen several videos but I've never watched yours, so I busted out my supplies LOL, 😂😊 this is the perfect time to do this because we are on the tail end of hurricane, we might lose power... We might not. It might flood it might not. Prayers for the West Coast of Florida that is going to take a direct hit.
😢❤😢❤ PRAYERS & ANGELS FROM KANSAS
I'm going to try this. I have a can of Crisco hanging around and don't use it for pie crust anymore, as I have come to prefer lard.
I did try this and it works! It was actually longer lasting than was said it could be.
Thank you so much for sharing this, Denise!
I prefer lard too. Crisco is basically like eating plastic.
for green house heaters, that is about 8 days of heat using a modification to increase the amount of surface area heated. as for fires, NFPA states that 20 houses burn each day due to candles, or about 8700 per year. this may or may not result in total loss, just the reporting using the fire cause system.
Agree. That is why I said in the video that I burn the candle for 8 hours a day because I won't burn a candle at night and usually there is enough light in the daytime that a candle isn't needed. Many people said in the comments, they would just put the candle in the plastic can. I tried to reiterate safety first and putting it in a glass container.
you can still use it for cooking ( I wouldn't unless there was absolutely nothing else ) ! and you can make them with used veggie lard ( do they call it shorting ?)! burning candles and cooking fire is all you should use veggie oil for ,because it is made in a petroleum process , and veggie oil will destroy cell walls !
Thank you for sharing this. I agree…it could be used for cooking if there is nothing else. About does have a second purpose beyond a candle if an emergency happened.
Safety always ! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Agree!! So many people have asked why not put the candle in the crisco, but I would not burn a candle in a plastic container.
What happens to the melted wax and lard? Do you need to pour it out of the jar?
Thanks! Your video is great and simplifies the process compared to others I’ve seen, with much less mess. I’m going to try this!
Thank you for letting me know it was helpful! I appreciate that!
Thank u
Does the crisco evaporate or just turns to liquid. Can you put liquid back in fridge and put candle back in again.
It evaporates. But it takes a long time for that to happen since it burns for so long.
@@sandysteinbrook thanks
What is the reason for melting and re-solidifying ? Does it become more stable /hardened like the candle itself helping it to burn slow? Our power is shut off and I just seen this trick, I can't believe I never seen this before or anyone talking about it. Living in Florida I've been thru many hurricanes, and lots of power outs lol I'm def going to make several to prepare for upcoming storms but also my current situation. Do you need to melt it in order for it to work the same? I can't use a microwave or a fridge 😔
Hi! Melting it just helps it to fit in to the jar better. If I just took a spoon and pushed it into the jar it would have a lot of gaps and not be solid. I dont know that it would affect the way the candle burns at all though.
And the reason I would not just put a candle in the can of Crisco, as some people have asked in the comments, is safety first. I do not want to burn a candle in a plastic can. A glass jar and the candle which down inside the jar is what is safe...not a candle sticking out of a plastic can of crisco
@@sandysteinbrook haha yeah no I would def do it all the same just minus the melt.. tho a hot sunny day might help hehe thank you! Ill try to do the whole process then, nothing better than a forever candle! Namaste 🙏
The vegetable shortening in Crisco was also developed as a lubricant for the Navy in underwater machinery such as submarines.
That is interesting! That also further supports why I would not consume it as food. Lol.
I recently heard that canola oil, too, was originally a machine lubricant. I'll never eat that.
Great idea! Thank you!😊
You're welcome! :)
Do you think it would be safe to use essential oils, & food coloring on these candles? I would LOVE to have pink, purple, & white prayer candles going for 7 to 9 days straight with a little sweet smell
Yes, you can use essential oils. Put them in when the shortening is cooling, but not solid yet. As far as coloring...food coloring may work great, but someone told me that they used to make these candles when she was a child and her mom would use crayon shavings and it would tint the candles to different colors.
Did you ever try it?
How clean-burning is Crisco?
Great. Power is out so melt shortening in the microwave (no power). Wonderful advice. Then put in fridge (no power) to draw off the heat with no way to cool it down.
No, dont wait until the power is out to make the candle. This is a candle to make ahead of time to have ready in case of an emergency.
your wick must need trimming frequently?
No, I didn't have to trim the wick at all. The wick burnt down as the candle burnt.
I tried this the candle burned 1/3 of the way down the first 24 hours did I do something wrong cause I don't think its gonna make it 24 days
Hello! 24 days is based on burning it 8 hours a day. I don’t burn a candle while sleeping or during daylight when we have a source of light.
Yes, sorry for making my comment! You’re a nice lady and I think I’ll try that
No need to apologize! , and thank you very much for your kind comment.
Great candles to store for power outage. Would submerging a couple wicks work sans candle.
I chose to put in a glass jar for my candle for safety reasons, because I wouldn't ever want to burn a candle in the plastic container that Crisco vegetable shortening come sold in.
Sandy! Great video. Great idea .......................... 😎👍👍
The fact that it totally works! SO cool.
Are there any ingredients that would be dangerous to inhale from burning this?
Could I use plain shortening instead of the All-Vegetable version?
I think it is all the same.
Great and practical video. Ty .
I wouldn't eat crisco but am definitely going to do this.
I'm with you!
Looks difficult to relight the candle if it goes out halfway down the jar. ?
Light a long piece of uncooked spaghetti to get at wick.
Is that a Berkey water cooler?
Yes! We have had it quite a while and love it!
Thank you for sharing this information and your know-how with us.
You are welcome. I am glad it was helpful.
So original...you just make it super special! Did you burn it for 24 days?
Hello! When I say 24 days that is burning it 8 hours a day. I never burn a candle while sleeping and there is no need in the daylight hours. But yes, if you burn it everyday it will last 24 days. I have made up several of these candles now to keep in case of emergency.
How important is the wax? Will dripless candles work, or is the wax ring really important?
I would think that a dripless candle would still work. It still produces heat to melt the vegetable shortening.
I also have read you can just put the candle inside the can of shorting and it would work too.
So what scares me personally about that is, the can of shortening is plastic. When I buy candles they're always in a glass jar. That is why I chose a sturdy glass jar. I have heard terrible stories of house fires because of candles, so I wanted to make sure I was choosing a safe option.
Is there a shelf life to these? Just curious if Crisco can go rancid?
I don't think vegetable shortening can go rancid. It is shelf stable for years.
Thank you so much!
@@sandysteinbrook
Do these produce a lot of soot?
I burned the one I made so I could see how long it lasted. I burnt it the house and I didn’t have any soot. A tiny bit when it first started burning then it dissipated. But I am using these for emergency use, not to burn regularly so I’ve never tried it again.
Keep the wicks trimmed to about 1/4 inch and you'll have no problems.
I love it ....thank you ❤❤❤
Cant wait to do it ...oh n can you add lemon n or orange slices into the jars or cinnamon sticks ?!....or scented wax cubes for aroma?!
I would assume that you can. I have never done it since I really just made the candle to have for emergency use, but others have said that they have done it and it worked!
Good tip, Thank You 🙏
About a week after I made this video, we had a huge ice storm come through our area. SO glad I had some long term candles just in case. None of us every know when an emergency may arise. Thanks for watching!
Curious what it smells like.
It has no smell. None from the candle and none from the vegetable oil
Do these have to be stored in the fridge? Or can they be put in a cabinet?
No, they just get stored in the cabinet. They don't melt. The crisco stays in it's solid form
@@sandysteinbrook ok wow...I'm glad they won't go rancid left out or stored in a cabinet. Thank you for the info!! 💜 I'll making some soon!
This is awesome! I know what I'm doing tomorrow 🕯🕯Thanks Sandy!
Woohoo! Go make some candles, girl!
Great video, and nice save on the Crisco can lol
I am glad it was helpful! :)
Can you put a fragrance oil in it?
I am sure that you can. I have not tired it to see if it works since I made these just to use in case of emergency.
This was a great video I always see candles on sale at the doller store now I can use them
and who wants to waste money
I am right with you...I sure don't want to waste money! Mostly with the way inflation is on everything. Mostly groceries...good gracious!
if Crisco expired, can still use it?
Fantastic ! these will be my new Shabbat Candles now. + heaters, thanks.
You're welcome! What a great use for the candles. :)
In an emergency situation this would not matter but what does concern me about this is since it is the oil that is burning there is a possibility that burning this for a long time would leave a greasy residue on everything in the room.
You are right in case of emergency you will just burn it, but I think the oil burns clean, mostly since it was originally made for candles. I didn't have any soot coming from the candle I burned.
Please help. No matter what I do, and watched your video twice. My taper candles and thick short emergency taper candles, keep going out. The melted crisco oil drowns out the flame. I've removed oil but it keeps catching up as it burns.
Hmmm... Did you make a "well" around the candle just to get the wax away? Is the candle wick long enough and above were the oil is? Are they some kind of quick burn candle? I actually don't know if that is a thing... I just can't think of why your candle is going out.
@@sandysteinbrookI made a well around five emergency candles only one works. I use different tapered candles. I did all you showed. Same kind of jars. The wicks were long and burned down then when it hit the oil it smothered and the wicked became very short. Any ideas?

How would you store these if you were making up a few for the future? Just in case...
Make it so the candle part isn't above the rim of the jar and place the lid and rim that came with the jar back on.
Thanks for sharing this very useful information.
They work great!
And why aren't these in shops? Because it doesnt rinse enough money out of people it lasts to long. Money holds the world to ransom.
Thankyou for trying to help people, bless ya.
Thank you.
If you don't have electricity, how do you use the microwave. Do you make this before the electricity goes out
Yes! Make it before hand. Then you have it ready in case of an emergency.
I’m assuming that if you want to food coloring and essential oil could be mixed in while melted
I would think that would work well to add while everything is melted. I haven't tried it and others have asked. If you do it, will you let me know how it worked so I can share with others when they are in the comments also? Thanks!
I assume you could make these all scented candles with a bit of essential oil in the mix?
I am sure that would work!
I really learn a lot from this video. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Love it. Much appreciated! 💗
You're welcome. :)
What to do with the black soot that starts after it’s lit. I use it in my small greenhouse and it fills up with smoke/soot.
I'm not sure. Did you use crisco as well? I didn't have an issue with soot. I only burned the one candle I made to see how long it would burn. I burnt it in my house. Now I only have them for an emergency if the lights go out. Maybe someone else can answer this question for you.
Keep the wick trimmed to about 1/4 inch.
So... If the power is out, how do you melt the Crisco in the microwave?
Also... Once you melt the Crisco you could put some food coloring in and mix it to have a colored candle.
Melt the crisco ahead of time and go ahead and have the candle ready for an emergency. I have these made and in my cabinet for "if" I ever need them later.
gas stove and a Double-boiler
I have three of these candles in a camp heater. The well ventilated area where they sit will reach 90 degrees with three candles burning. In a couple of hours the Crisco turns to liquid, the wick falls over and extinguishes. In three hours ya wake up cold, any suggestions ? When they are working they are very good but it doesn't last long. I would test those candles for hours because I think the flame will burn a hole in the Crisco and the heat will melt the sides causing the wick to go under and go out. I downsized my jar to eliminate this problem but it didn't solve my wick problem. Alcohol candles doesn't work in this situation either.
Hmmm...I didn't have that same experience. Granted, I only burned the candle I made to see how long it would burn. For me as the candle burned only the crisco around the candle melted. Do you think that it was so warm in your space that it was melting all the crisco in the jar instead of it melting down at a slower pace as the candle burned? Although I understand wanting to get the heat aspect as well.
@@sandysteinbrook I've ordered wooden wicks to see if this will solve the problem. It should work but I haven't gotten to try them yet. I'm also testing olive oil candles with a carbon felt wick. This has turned into a quest for me! lol
If you put your candles in the freezer for like 24 hours, then you can take them out and burn them whenever you want they will last longer
Just shove the candle down in the can of shortening? Wouldn't that work?
I would never burn a candle in a plastic can. There are too many fires because of candles. That is why I made it safer by putting it in a glass jar and also cutting down the candle to fit into the jar.
This is an awesome tip! Thanks!!!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching.
Nice! Thank u so much!
You’re welcome!
I looked at my box of taper candles that I just purchased yesterday from target, room essentials brand they are 12 count 10 inches in length and it says burn time is up to 6 hours each. 😮😮😮 I just want people to make sure if this information is listed on the packaging of their candles, that they take note of it
Will it heat a one man tent and does it put smoke or dangerous fumes out
Hello! I don't know if it puts off much heat. I only made it for emergency long burning candle use to have a good light source. Now, others have said if you add a clay terracotta pot over top of the flame, and leave room for ventilation that it will put off heat. I haven't tried that though.
Would it be safer to put it in a metal can?
Glass or metal would work either way. Either one would be safe.
Very interesting
I hope it is helpful to you to have some emergency candles on hand also. I just feel it is always best to remain prepared.
@@sandysteinbrook yes ma'am I just stumbled upon your video
and found it very interesting,
Thank you, john
Pretty neat.
It really works!
For emergencies I bought an oil lamp that burns paraffin oil that is formulated to eliminate smoke and shut. The reason I bought the oil lamp was that it was safer had a broader base and in an emergency air provided over 40 Watts of power. I bought several of them one for the kitchen and one for the bathroom and one for the living room. They are great for when power goes out and they are also very good for the core. A quart of oil was about $2.50. How much safer artificial light.
Oil lamps are great! I have several and several tubs of fuel in case of emergency.
Thank you
You're welcome! It's always best to be prepared, is the way I feel.
Wouldnt tho the fumes be toxi or no? Thinking bout this also as a mini heater with venting the window
No, crisco fumes wouldn't be toxic. You are right about being a mini heater. On survival skills videos they show how a candle can keep someone alive because it is just enough warmth to live. If it is used in a very small space.
@@sandysteinbrook ok cool. I think 1-2 of them then with venting from my truck windows will help with warmth at night on 30-45 degree nights while im the backseat of my truck.
Can I use lard or the combo vegetable and animal fat?
Im not sure since I have never tried it, but you could try and see if it works too.
Do crisco candles have flash fires? Or is that if you have more than 1 wick thereby making it hotter?
Great video, I am going to try this
Something so easy is going to amaze you how long it burns. Thanks for watching!
How do you keep the Crisco from getting rancid
I have Crisco that is out of date. Instead of throwing it away I will be making these candles. What does it matter if it is rancid. I am not eating it. I will be using essential oils for smell.
Can you add essential oil ?
I have read where essential oil can be added as well as shavings of crayon to melt with the oil to give color to the candle.
If you use essential oils, put them in while the vegetable shortening is cooling. I read a Gardners post about making these outside candles and adding eucalyptus and lavender to keep the bugs away in the summer.
