Thanks for the reminder of oil candles which are reliable, non messy & economical. Allow me to share a fun fact: You can also burn peanuts for light & a little heat. In tents we’d pick up a peanut with a pin & place it in a little metal container (like a tart tin, tuna can etc.) & then light it! It’s surprising how much heat & light comes from burning the oil in that little sucker!! 👍🏻
Tried this last night for three rooms, very effective, but, use the large Crisco can! My small Crisco's are already 1/3 gone from only 24 hours! Also tried 2 cans of Crisco, under an oven rack (held up at 4 corners by canned goods), great stovetop cooking with 2 gas burners! Water took only 15 minutes to boil; food cooked immediately!
Hi dd, this is great stuff. If you remember in the video I never burn the candles constantly. I usually burn them 4 - 8 hours at a time, and always trim the wick. This helps the candle to burn slower and longer. Cheers!
Very creative, and as per UA-cam disclaimers, please use critical thinking and always be safe when using fire inside of a building. Never leave these candles unattended. Thanks for your share, Cheers!
Do this all the time , I buy cheap hard wax,and mix it 50/50 with crisco It blends very nice ,cotton shoe laces for wicks or just cut to fit a stick candle inside your jar candle. Looks great
Great idea, thanks. This is pretty much the ONLY thing you should ever use Crisco for; do not put this stuff in your body, ever. It's not food. Good to know it's decent, affordable fuel!

It would be a good idea to melt the bottom of the birthday candle and stick it in the jar before you fill it up. The crisco will liquify if it is being used with a candle heater. If you don't attach the candle to the jar the candle will move once the crisco liquifies.

People please remember to never leave these un attended, and extinguish every few hours of burning. Any solid form of lard has the potential to flash over and start a fire in its LIQUID state. If the Liquid container happens to leak or drip it is spreading the flammable fuel source. It is always best to use on a non porous, hard surface. Thank you for giving us simple and cheap ideas! These are perfect just to store in case something does happen.
To get more heat use a cake pan with 8-12 shorter candles and use a larger terra cola pot on top. Every hour put a couple table spoons of CRISCO in the cake pan to keep the wicks from burning down to rapidly. You can cook off this like eggs in a fry pan over the 12 candles very easily. Just keep adding spoon fulls of CRISCO and it will last a long long time. Thx great video AZ USA
Thanks for sharing this, the younger generation need these kinds of tip. We older people know survival skills. I have been without electricity and heat for 7 days before with no discomfort. Actually we had a great time.

It is my hope that all ages find this comforting and useful. Thank you for commenting, and I hope to read from you again soon. Cheers!
Last winter I was able to unfreeze and keep unfrozen our well house. I had seen this video just because a few months prior when one day we woke up to frozen pipes. We shopped for heaters but none to be had. Then the lightbulb went on. We got the supplies for this and OMG!!! It worked. Well house unfroze and we never had to worry again.Used with the right precautions, you can be worry free. Thank you so so much. Saved lots of $$ and worked better then any heater we could have purchased. 😁 🦅❤🙏
Thank you Audrey for posting this comment, as I know that these little tricks work as well, and have actually saved lives, frozen pipes and gardens. May you have a warm and safe Winter, Cheers!
You mentioned this video the other day. This is such a great piece of info to have, especially after last winter, and the prediction that this winter, may be a replay of last year!!! Thank you for sharing.
This is actually pretty interesting!! Crisco and I came on the scene the same year! I grew up eating foods, such as fried chicken, cooked in Crisco oil --- the most trusted name in cooking oils all my life!!! My mother used it for cooking, and so do I. For cooking, the flavor and quality are the best I think! But I'm glad to know my good friend, Crisco, or a generic replacement can be a good source of light and heat!!!! Yay! Thanks, Ninth Element!!!
Great demo. I plan on going off grid from my greedy Alabama POWER Company. Your Crisco candles for light and heat will be perfect along with solar everything. Thank you so much.
I love this!!! I pour and sell wax candles and sometimes I just want a little something quick for myself. I like to put candles all over my yard for a fire fly effect and it's costly to make so many votive candles, not to mention time involved. Thank you. (Also, loved the fun facts/history lesson)
Hi Kelly, if you are wanting an everyday candle please consider this video ua-cam.com/video/rHYWuwjixhA/v-deo.html, Read my tips at the top of the comments. Enjoy! Cheers!
Great content. Love practical knowledge. Especially when it can easily applied! Knowing such things can really make a difference on how well someone does in a bad situation.
I'm in Portland and we were without power for over a week after historic snow storm. It was so brutal and really wears on your spirit. So now I'm watching these type of videos : ) *Thank you!
Oh My! That is sad news, and I had no idea it was that bad. I am 2 hours South of you, and we had nothing happen. I hope that your power is restored and that you are finding simple affordable ways to stay warm in an emergency. Cheers!
Wow! That blew my mind. We're currently gearing up for an ice storm projected to come our way tomorrow evening here in Kentucky. You're an absolute delight, subbed! : )
Just happens we're in a severe thunderstorm right now in October. Got crisco and candles on hand so might give it test run tonight but will definitely be making some candles up ahead of winter and for my grown children to have in there emergency supply kits. Thanks for sharing!
You can save fat rendered from meat in a crock pot for making a candle too. Cook and cool in fridge and remove off top layer. Save jelled.. layer for nutrition... better nails, skin and bone strength... for soups or gravey.. or if clarified aspic... also soap or bird feeder cakes..
@@NinthElement Glad you enjoyed that. Yes ive been interested in older ways of doing things. Why buy tons of Crisco when the far will do... but then again many cookwhat and serve meals.. If one cooks their own or sabes the bones from a roasted chicken they can be used for rendering fat and soup stock..
Please do, my only hesitation with giving this out to our un-housed populations is that they have to sleep with all of there stuff, which in close proximity to an open flame is a HUGE fire danger. If you could please figure out some way for them to use this safely that would be amazing. Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks so much for sharing. I was born and raised in NYC and now I live in the mountains. I’ve only been through two power outages my whole life before moving. We have a couple every year here. And it seems to be increasing. Such a brilliant and inexpensive way to make emergency candles.
I lived in the mountains of BC for 15 years and used these when we had cold difficult weather. Now I use them in my Tiny Camper on extremely cold nights. They work well, Cheers!
Hello there. This was so interesting. It’s a fantastic idea. With all the storms and outages. This certainly is a good solution. It’s also cheaper then buying batteries for the flash lights. I am so glad to find you today.
Glad you liked it. This was my first UA-cam video that I created when I started my channel in 2019. I had no idea how many lives this would touch, and my hope is that everyone is warm, well, and prepared. Thank you for leaving a sweet note. Cheers!
After several power outages winter 20/21, it prompted me to do my homework now for fall/winter 21/22. I was too cold to do anything even though I had things in my house. I learned I was not prepared. Thank you this one will be put together & stored during the nice weather....I will be ready this time.
Hello, I think that planning for things like that makes sense these days. The power grid is over loaded in most areas these days. Storms take down the electricity all of the time. Knowledge is the best way to survive. Please share this out with family and friends. Stay safe and well. Cheers!

Wow! Thanks for sharing the history of what was the primary cooking oil of my childhood. My mom always fried chicken in Crisco long before the harms of hydrogenated oil were known by the average person. Thankfully, eventually we transitioned to heart healthy eating. My mom is 84 now. Candle making sounds like a much better use for Crisco even though my mom's fried chicken was superb.
When my daughter was in the Girl Scouts I found one of their old handbooks from back in the 1940s or 50s. It was full of interesting old knowledge like this Crisco lamp. I wish i still had that handbook!

I had a ton of Passover candles in their little jars. Refilled with shortening and a b'day candle, perfect fit. 4 candles under a large pot with the hole left open gives me a nice geyser of heat. 3 large pots grouped together (so far) and my little place is comfortable. This is so fun!!
Thank you! I wish we had seen this back when we had the deep freeze in Texas. We will be implementing this for the winter in case we have a repeat, which I hope we don't.
Thx already was going 2 try crisco candles with flower pots when saw video on how long they burn. We were out of power for 4 months in dead of winter & tried flower pot heater. But we used 4-6 $1.00 walmart candles so needed new ones approx every 24-26 hrs. I used 2 thick mexican terracotta pots bolted 2gether. Took awhile 4 them 2 heat up but it worked beautifully. But was costly 2 buy 4 candles daily. We burned all day & nite was very cold winter with snow. Haven't had a power outage since but already made some crisco candles. U just reaffirmed that this wud work & last alot longer again thx...
@@joannschlicker6995 I would think using bricks would be even better, because the bricks would also absorb the heat, then distribute it, like the terra cotta pot! Just need a fireproof surface. You could get away with thinner base surface with the fondue stand.😀
Hello!! You convinced me to buy a little stove from Amazon, that you were using to cook on using tea lights, or sterno cans. I thought that was so cool, and it was far less expensive than the ones I had been looking at. I didn't know you were Canadian! New subscriber today, with this great video too!
Hemp wicks work great too!
Yes they do! HEMP WICKS WORK TOO! Cheers!
You mentioned this video the other day. This is such a great piece of info to have, especially after last winter, and the prediction that this winter, may be a replay of last year!!! Thank you for sharing.
Glad it was helpful! Cheers!
You are most welcome. It does make awesome soft cookies and pie crusts. Too bad it is not good for us. Cheers!
Awesome Crisco Oil/Lard candles.
I am glad that you found the Crisco candle tip helpful!
Great demo. I plan on going off grid from my greedy Alabama POWER Company. Your Crisco candles for light and heat will be perfect along with solar everything. Thank you so much.
Hi Barb, unplug! Cheers!
THANKS FOR YOUR FAST AND SIMPLE WAY OF EXPLAINING ,,, GREAT INFORMATION ...HAVE A BLESSED DAY
Thanks, you too Patricia, and thank you for your kind comment. Cheers!
Enjoy! Cheers!
There is also those cooking oil candles or they called the "uncandle" back in the 70s.
This is a much better way to save money heating than buying candles and no odor 👍🏻
Agreed, that is why I made this fun film. Cheers!
Great content. Love practical knowledge. Especially when it can easily applied! Knowing such things can really make a difference on how well someone does in a bad situation.
Totally. Thanks for getting the gist of my first EVER made DIY film Wooo! Cheers!
You are making a wonderful blessed day. Thanks so very very very much for sharing and caring.❤️🇨🇱🙏
Thank you! You too! I am so happy that you found my channel, as I like to have fun here and share it with you. Cheers!
I just accidentally found you! I LOVE this! So informative, practical and easy! Thank you so much!!!
Hi Patty, have fun with it. Cheers!
Oh No! I hope that you make it through warm and well. Cheers!
Ha! That's why I'm here also 😊
Lol i am looking for a friend who lost her electricity in Oregon
@@jessicacanfield5408 I hope that everyone gets heat and electricity back soon. Stay warm and safe. Cheers!
@@NinthElement thank you they are hoping to get electricity back no earlier than Thursday
Idk how this video popped up in my feed but I'm GLAD it did, thank you ❤
I'm so glad! Cheers!
Just happens we're in a severe thunderstorm right now in October. Got crisco and candles on hand so might give it test run tonight but will definitely be making some candles up ahead of winter and for my grown children to have in there emergency supply kits. Thanks for sharing!
Good luck! Cheers!
what a lovely soul u are:) very informative and useful for these uncertain crazy days ahead! Subbed... ty.
Welcome aboard! Cheers!
Hi Cherrie, you sound just like my Nana. She would have done something like that. Cheers!
Sending your tips to homeless people. Thank you.
Please do, my only hesitation with giving this out to our un-housed populations is that they have to sleep with all of there stuff, which in close proximity to an open flame is a HUGE fire danger. If you could please figure out some way for them to use this safely that would be amazing. Thank you! Cheers!
This is a great idea especially in the time we live now thank you so much thank you
You are so welcome! Take care. Cheers!
Great idea,, I was thinking of trying this, and also in my 12x8 greenhouse
Go for it. cheers!
Came for the candle, stayed for your personality.
Awww Shucks. Thank you, I hope that you stay for a while.
Cheers!
I love your stand! I am going to get all the elements necessary. I just went through the February freeze in S. Mississippi. I used two regular candles in jars and turned a dutch oven upside down to heat a small room in my home. I was quite cozy! I want to make one of these for emergencies.
Hi Kellie, I am glad that you made it through the cold snap. With Polar Vortexes developing all over the US, a cold snap is more likely to happen. Knowledge is power and that is a beautiful thing. See you again sometime, Cheers!
Seems like Emergency is our
daily condition in North America
Love your idea, 1st time viewer

Greatings from Texas. As I'm sure you know we are going through a winter storm right now. Thank you for your words of wisdom.
Hi Gabriel, I am sending many positive vibes your way and I am hoping that everyone makes it through this warm and well. I do hope that my videos help to inspire creative thinking for staying warm. Cheers!
I would not pass up homemade fried chicken. I am weak, lol! Cheers!
When my daughter was in the Girl Scouts I found one of their old handbooks from back in the 1940s or 50s. It was full of interesting old knowledge like this Crisco lamp. I wish i still had that handbook!
Thanks for this message, I am going to look for one of these handbooks in the second hand book stores. I was a girl Scout too, Cheers!
Wow!! I’m going off to buy some crisco today!! Great video! TFS!❤️👍
Hi Honey...fellow Canadian! Use up old beautiful candle jars and canning jars for these candes. I have been burning one of these this week for 10 hours so far and it has barely burnt up. You can add essential oil for a nice change in your space. Stay tuned for more adventures, reviews and camping hacks. Cheers!
@@NinthElement Awesome! I have heard about heating small spaces with these cool little candle stoves, but have yet to try one out. Do you find it heats fairly well?
@@HoneyandMe Hi Honey, thanks for asking. YES! In the Micro Camper they work awesome. I have been running experiments, and those videos will be up soon. Cheers!
@@NinthElement I look forward to watching them!
This is something i would never have thought of. Thank you for making this video.
No problem! Cheers!
Very cool very creative and very cool seeing that crisco was used for that originally never knew! God bless and peace be within!

Many people in Texas could really use this now. I sent it to one friend there. This was very interesting and I’m going to experiment with it at my place in Wisconsin.
Good luck to everyone this Winter and every Winter. Cheers!
I live in Chicago and I thank you so much for sharing because we have harsh winters as well. And with power outages in winter this is great for me to use.❤

Man made the border but we are all North America ❤️
What a great idea! Thanks
Hello Miss Cindy, I am so happy that you found this enlightening. Cheers!
Thanks for sharing!! Cheers!
Thank you for this great info. This is a great idea... and I've put Crisco on my next shopping list !!!
You are so welcome. Cheers!
Thank you! That was helpful information. I will buy some Crisco next time I go shopping and make some oil candles.
Wonderful! Cheers!
Thank you! I wish we had seen this back when we had the deep freeze in Texas. We will be implementing this for the winter in case we have a repeat, which I hope we don't.
Kim, being prepared is 80% of survival. Knowledge is 100%. Take care. Cheers!
Great Idea 👍🏻
Here in Germany we can buy coconut oil in jars, so that we don‘t need the step with the microwave... 😊
Great idea! Cheers!
I love this video! Thank you! I'm making crisco candles for power outages!!
Hello, I am happy that you are thinking about this and making these candles. They are easy to make and very useful. Cheers!
In an emergency, this is awesome. Cheers!
Great idea to use the fondue rack for the base! I got to make some of these..appreciate the video.Thank you.
Right? Have fun. Cheers!
I saw a video where someone used bricks to raise the pot.
I love what you're doing. Our grandparents were preppers, and didn't even know it. It was called survival, putting up canned food and having a garden. Now I do it because I enjoy the security of knowing I'm prepared to look after myself and my husband and doggies. With each new prep skill I learn, I feel more and more able to look after my family. Love to you!
Welcome aboard, and I am so happy that you are taking care of preparing simple safe solutions. So much love to you, Hubby & the Puppers! Cheers!
Wow! Thank you. This may come in really handy someday.
You never know? Cheers!
Sharing this video so those without heat or power can have a heat source. Thank you so much for making this video.
So nice of you to share. I appreciate you. Stay safe and warm. Cheers!
Winters in Ohio we always kept in our car survival kit was a red clay plant pot like the one you show, and a candle.
