Chevrolet Cruze CEL Diagnosis - P0171 - Failed PCV Valve

  • Check Engine light recently popped up on my Chevrolet Cruze. It had been occasionally running rough, but the day the light came on, it became very difficult to drive. It would idle rough, high idle, when clutch was depressed it would try to run away but the governor would catch the engine.
    Had the code read at the local auto parts store and found that a P0171 code was tripped. Apparently this is a common issue with the early models of the Cruze. the most common cause is a faulty PCV valve as seen in this video.
    I hope this helps you diagnose an issue you are having.

    Edit/Update: @1:37 I point to what was thought to be the PCV valve. Turns out this is just a pressure regulating diaphragm which rips under extreme loads such as a large vacuum leak. The failure shown is just one of the tell tale signs of the common PCV problem with these engines. There are two PCV checks in this vehicle. one in the intake manifold and the other on the large corrugated hose leading to the turbo. I have just released a video outlining one of the fixes to this problem. Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/qDd5obMzka8/v-deo.html

    PCV valve is inside the intake manifold. The valve cover has the pressure relief valve. Also called "Rupture Disk".

    • @adamtrombino106
      @adamtrombino106 5 років тому +1

      The complete fix is replace the intake and valve cover, and be sure the plastic hose to the intake is sealing. I've seen them plug up in as little as 53k. and carbon deposits unseat the oil ring, causing a vacuum leak. A tell tale sign that things are plugging up is by removing the oil fill cap and checking for massive pressure while it's running. In a functioning system, there should be very little blow by through the cap.

      Adam Trombino I have that problem with mine. Tons of pressure/ vacuum when i remove the fill cap with engine running already Replaced the valve cover and still have codes and pressure. Looked for the nipple in the actual intake and it’s not there. Think that’s my problem? 1.8t

    I work at a Chevy dealer and am now having this work done. PCV tube, O2 sensor and camshaft cover. I have 97k on my '12 turbo and luckily have an extended warranty but it only covers the cover with a $100 deductible- all other parts will be discounted but will still have a couple hundred dollar bill with the labor. I've had quite a bit of work done on the car over the last couple of years either under warranty or with special coverage from GM. overall I love the car and it has never left me stranded!

    My daughter has a 2015 Buick Encore. It had the same issue as the Chevy. Was able to get new valve cover under warranty. Miss the old days when you could just clean the PCV with some carb cleaner or gunk. Agree that the design could be much better. Thanks for the video. Most likely would not have diagnosed without considerable more time involved. (And money)

      There are actually 2 on this car. One is integrated into the intake and the other is part of the correlated tubing by the turbo. The typical culprit is the intake one deciding to vanish. It’s a tiny rubber umbrella valve.

    Clicking noise is faulty purge solenoid. noticed this a lot after replacing valve cover, its the little solenoid towards the rear of the valve cover, if you unplug it the noise should subside. If the noise goes away, your should replace purge solenoid $20 part super easy.

    Just a hint, the best diaphragm is in rubber viton, because it has greater tear strength, the original diaphragm, is silicone, which resists temperature but easy tears.
    So the diaphragm does not dry out and tears, putting on viton will have a much higher shelf life, hugs

      Some models will have defects. If you a car person youll make sure it runs smooth and know mostly what to fix and better parts to replace with the original, if your a non car person, start off doing what i did and looking around and skimming through UA-cam for possible fixes. Sometimes it IS the vehicle, but sometimes its the owner neglecting it. Make sure to keep everything in tip top shape and make sure under the hood is clear of lots of debree dust and dirt as it can help speed up the process or ruin any sensors or rubber parts needed.

    That's not actually your pcv!. Pcv is in your intake manifold and there's actually 2 of them. 1 in the intake manifold behind your engine and the other in the bypass hose that attaches to your turbo. That what you are calling a pcv valves is really a vacuum idle assist

  • @PeterAckarey

    Just had this same problem with my 2011 Cruze Eco-Turbo this week except mine was idling too low and even stalled once at a red light. Felt as if the car were struggling at normal speeds. Had the same work done. $260 parts and labor. Bought mine new, now has 110,000 miles on it. Other than the water pump failing at 98,000 miles (which was replaced under the 100,000 mile powertrain warranty), never had any other problems with it. So a new valve cover at 110,000 isn't so terrible. Now that the valve cover has been replaced, it's as peppy as it ever was. Great car.

    The gasket comes with the cover! Also buy 700 degree gasket maker to place on two small places of the engine. You will see the grey on the left side of the front and rear of the engine head. When replacing. Then let sit for 24 hours to let the gasket maker set. The fuel cap set will also need to be removed from your old cover, so dont freak out when you see that your oil cap wont fit on.

    The ruptured diaphragm is a symptom, not the cause, of another problem with the PCV system. The PCV valve in the intake manifold is not closing and that is causing the diaphragm rupture from excess vacuum. Without fixing the PCV valve this rupture will just happen again to your new valve cover.

    I had a checking engine light on, so I took my car (2012 Cruze) to Chevy service center, and they told me I need to replace the valve cover. Probably this video is describing my problem. First, yeah- it's not covered under the warranty so I even had to pay for the diagnostic fee which was $95. They charged me $98 plus something for the parts only, and I'm about to go back to get it installed. Once it's done, I'm planned to get charged for about $90 again for the labor. The video said $69.53 for the part.... so I'm not sure if the center's getting me a golden cover or not, but surely it's more expensive now.

    Thank you Jungle King for the video! I have a 2011 Chevy Cruze (out of warranty sadly) but we had two CEL P0171 and P1101. After replacing Valve Cover Assembly like you mentioned, the P0171 was wiped, but not the P1101. Should I continue to look into the MAF? Could there be another vacuum issue or is this sensor the likely cause?
    Thanks in advance
    -J

    • @jungleking007Channel
      @jungleking007Channel  7 років тому

      Did some reading on the P1101 code. Not sure if this is your setup, some have found this popping up when using a K&N or equivalent filter that is heavily oiled, or using a Cold Air intake setup. The MAF sensor is very sensitive and if oil hits the sensor wires or there is excessive air flow it will read incorrectly or readings will exceed the sensors normal operating parameters. may want to try cleaning the sensor first with a MAFS specific cleaner. Others had to search for another possible vacuum leak in the system.

      +Russell Hill the intake manifold has a valve in it about two inches back, on top, from where it meets the engine. there's a hose running from the valve to the turbo. this is the second part of the PCB (first is the runners and valve on the valve cover). if you pop off the hose and look in you should see a brass and orange plastic check valve. it prevents the pressure in the block from traveling backwards. if the valve is not there you will replace valve cover after the next because boost is where it shouldn't, and it will find a way out. only fix is a new intake manifold plenum. thank gm for making it as such

      I would have the tech give you the details. Different shops perform different procedures for a Fuel Service, It could be an induction cleaning similar to the video I have labeled "How to Properly Perform a Fuel System Cleaning" It could be a pressurized procedure hooked into the fuel rail running a cleaner through the injectors. Either way, Its' recommended to ask the tech who would be performing the work to explain the process and if this is a recommendation direct from the manufacturer. Good Luck!

    Just took mine in for same codes/symptoms, but they are saying the vacuum leak is in the manifold. I know for a fact I've had the valve cover replaced before, but its been over the 12k mi/1 year warranty for the valve cover (it was leaking oil before on the valve cover) but now my car is out of the 100K warranty. Is there a way I can verify that the manifold is leaking air somewhere? My guess would be the PCV valve is leaking on the valve cover, since its a known issue, and Chevy even said they've redesigned the part. Is the manifold plastic?

    • @jungleking007Channel
      @jungleking007Channel  7 років тому

      +Zubin Parakh intake manifold I believe is plastic. Could be a leaking seal. On a cold engine. Start it up and spray the joints and maybe the injector inlets with starter fluid or maybe carb cleaner. If it starts sputtering, you have found the manifold leak. Replacement seals may be needed if available.

      Sounds like normal start up. may be a short lag from start up to when the computer senses the air intake and works to balance fuel ratio. It's a bit more rough in the winter months due to the cold weather. Cold air is more dense which may cause a hesitation in the readings during initial start up.

      If you did the repair yourself, Probably less than $100 to fix. Dealership or mechanic repair you will have to add labor. Some places(chain shops) will quote and replace everything they think is associated with a certain code just to cover themselves. Good Luck, hope you can solve your current issue with the P2138 code.

      Two possible vacuum leaks.
      - Intake manifold (pcv inside manifold)
      - Vapor Purge Valve
      The video says the PCV valve is on the valve cover but that is actually the rupture disk. pcv valve is in the intake manifold.

      No belt squeak on mine. Don't think the belt issue has anything to do with the PCV Valve. May be something separate like a worn bearing on a pulley or water or oil got onto the belt. The dealership popped my hood and pulled the dip stick and knew the issue. He fixed it. The other issue I had at the same time(rough idle) is the PCV valve issue. ALSO known issue at the dealership. Yes the entire cover is attached to the PCV Valve. DO NOT PAY TO FIX EITHER of the issues!!!! THE DEALERSHIP is to cover these as they are KNOWN ISSUES!! Even if out of warranty!! Do not let them tell you NO is you are over mileage on the warranty. I was as well and pressed how it's a known issue.

I would suggest you get on the GM website and review their warranty page. Valve cover is listed. If the dealership you went to won't cover it, might be a good Idea to contact their main help line to find one that will stand behind the warranty.
