  • Day 3 of my across Australia Polestar 2 EV road trip:
Late start at Border Village while we get those last electrons.
Stormy night last night with lightning and thunder. Except it’s not so late as we’re on WA time now, although the car is still on SA time!
Had a chat to some Citreon 2CV owners on their annual Raid run. They need to convert to electric power, I reckon.
Crossed into WA and heading 200km down the road to Madura Pass Hotel where there are a few charging options.
Got to love a remote DC charger!
Made it to Madura Pass with 25% and now charging with 22kw, all for $25.
    Efficiency down due moderate headwinds.
The charger was crowd funded and is owned by the University of WA, my old alma matter.
Had a burg for lunch and got a sticker for the charging board.
Next stop is the legendary chip oil charger at Caiguna roadhouse!
So far I’ve only seen a Y and an MG4 on this Nullarbor crossing.
    Another bucket list item ticked!
Successful charge at the Caiguna Biofil used-deep-fryer-oil 50kw charger, cost $50.
Roxy the attendant reckons it was running low on oil but we made it. I offered to buy a case of chips.
Now we can do the 90-mile world longest straight line stretch to Balladonia.
She reckons they see one or two EVs a day, maybe three at the most.
We made it to Balladonia and I can confirm it might not the world’s longest straight road but it is bloody long, especially driving into the sunset and then truck high beams.
Nice night for a swag under the stars at the caravan park with the car on overnight charge.
Tomorrow we hit Norseman and civilisation having made it across the Bight.
Trip stats were 527.1 km travelled, efficiency of 20.3 kWh/100km, westerly headwinds most of the day, and 6:26 hours driving at 85km/h.

There is a Canadian UA-camr, now living in Hong Kong as his wife got a job there with her employer, but he did a trip across the Nullarbor not in an EV but following the worlds biggest golf course where there are holes every so often as you drive across some are on real golf courses and some are just a hole at a roadhouse location. That cooking oil charger there is an article on The Driven about it think it's AEVA members along with TOCA WA that put it in.

@@TassieEV yeah the Nullarbor links is a great tourism concept! The cooking oil charger is great and I think both it and the Madura one were crowd funded. I heard today that the guy driving the Hyundai Mighty EV around Australia is the person who built it and he was a portable one on the back of the truck!

Love the idea of using recycled cooking oil for remote charging stops. Better than just not having a charge at all.
Surely a solar + powerwall type thing would work great in sunny locations like Rural Australia though?

Absolutely! If you watch my Day 2 video you will see me charging at the solar hybrid charger at Nullarbor Roadhouse. It consists of solar, batteries and a diesel generator. Maybe they should switch to cooking oil! Thanks for watching!

What was the cost of these charging stops?

Hey Paul! About $30 for 50kWh at a rapid charger, half that at a slower charger and mostly free overnight at a campground.

How do you stay awake on a road that straight and long?
