I thought I had watched every aviation video on UA-cam. This one is the best I have seen. So much good info for a new pilot like myself who flies a 48 C170 up near Muskoka. Great work Tom. Glad you guys were prepared and came out with a great story.
Hello. Thank you for watching and for the kind words. Yes, we were prepared but we got pretty lucky as well. I fly in and out of CYQA all the time. I assume you know the folks at Lake Central?
thank you so much for sharing, as a delivery skipper for sailboats, I found it very informative, a lot of similar experiences for the weather and the problems, I was in the air cadet when young, learned a lot there ! hope to see more content from you guys !
Yes, those guys were key to how it all went down as they let search and rescue know that we are alive and well and they adjusted their rescue plan accordingly. I have since taken up the habit of monitoring 121.5 whenever I have a radio free for this same reason. This is an SOP that all general aviation pilots should adopt.
Hello David. This is a treat to hear from you, my almost first flight instructor ever. You did a great job teaching me and I thank you for all the effort you put in. Looking back I can see that I was probably not the best student but we both stuck with it and now I feel like I am a pretty OK pilot. Still LOTS to learn but that is part of the joy. Thank you!
Thanks for watching. Pass them around if you can. I feel that we were very lucky that things turned out the way they did and that there is lots for all pilots to learn in here. Part of the reason I took the effort to put this together was to educate and inform.
One part in particular i'd like to call out especially to newer pilots. The importance monitoring 121.5 while flying. On this flight, you guys were the ones hoping someone was listening, and they were. I'll post a link to these in the next flight video I post.
Nice work to all and very special to be able to see how you all handled this on the ice. Paul is a gem to listen to. Tom, love the video and looking forward to more.
Amazing video! I'm grateful you two are safe, and turned it into a positive experience. When you posted it on social, I actually assumed it was some sort of training mission judging by your casualness about it all.
Amazing video and very educational for me, im not a pilot but have a little experience. You guys really did a great job how you handled this! I betol it was a long cold night though!!! Not sure since i have part 2 to watch but i hope you were picked up quickly!!! What happens in a case such as this when i think you were basically ferrying someone elses plane home to them? Their insurance cover it or what? So glad you both got down safely!!! But good lord it had to of gooten cold that night!
I think things are still being worked out money wise on the plane but insurance will certainly cover a lot of it. Me and Paul's rescue was compliments of the Canadian taxpayers and I am thankful to all Canadians for that.
Good stuff! Neighbor Jesse suggested your channel. Had a forced landing myself last year, had to splash down in a flooded quarry. It may be worth the drive to Acton but not the walk! Just saw a Skymaster buzz over couple days ago, maybe was you...
Thanks for watching. Are you in Jerseyville too? If so then yes, that probably was me flying over. Monday and Tuesday I was flying and passed overhead a few times. What do you fly? Thanks for watching!
@@tomairtvNo - I've a wee strip north of Dundas, but my business is near Rockton. Pretty much directly under the path between CYFD and CZBA. I noticed first because of the distinctive sound (can tell when the neighbor is taking up his Lake too!) And that there was some pretty gnarly weather moving in. I fly a Rans S7 on amphibs.
@@tomairtv your story very similar to these guys in Australia (except they chose to land) but with a better result! ua-cam.com/video/4MkJ4yWkqVQ/v-deo.html
Just watched this episode after seeing a suggested post on Facebook for your channel. Very interesting. So I subscribed and I see I’m subscriber no 100! Is there a prize for being subscriber 100? 😂
At this stage, I see a total of 166 comments on this incident, all tossing flowers, with not a one asking for peer review on what has to be one of the stupidest flights of fancy ever undertaken. Where is Richard Collins when we need him?
Not sure I follow as to why the flight was stupid. Please enlighten me. Richard Collins venerable publication Air Facts was happy to publish the written version of my story and no one had anything negative to say there either ( airfactsjournal.com/2023/08/my-lake-rescue-in-northern-ontario/ ). I am certainly open to hear what you feel we did wrong and how we could improve in your opinion. The main reason I put this material out there is to help educate the overall safety of our flying community.
Rather than me enlightening you, I suggest that you take the time to enlighten you. Cover every milometer of those trips and try to come up with things you did stupid. Of which there were many. I also suggest that you start with a map showing your flight path along with the reasons you chose the particular routing you did. I’ll follow with my review. Dave Brough

I do not actually. I'm at CYOO but I run up there often for time building. Keep up the great content.
I’d fly with either one of you gentlemen any day. Glad you survived!
Thank you for the vote of confidence and for watching. I am glad we survived too. So is my Mom.

Great Storytelling!
Very well done. Glad the airlines were listening in the back ground.

I agree and I monitor it as well as Channel 16 when I'm out on the boat. Merry Christmas my new friend! @@tomairtv
Great job
Awesome story!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video and an excellent demonstration of how and why to be prepared. You guys were doing it right!
Thank you!
That is quite the story. I can't wait to finish it in the next video.
You and me both!
Well done Tom! Good to see all that forced landing practice came to good use!

Awesome video, Tom - really well put together. Looking forward to Part Two.
Thanks for watching. Just so you know, part two is all cued up and ready to go here - ua-cam.com/video/0mR7y-IIXdM/v-deo.html
This is great stuff but you gotta get your audio gains sorted. You can't have quiet and loud mixed together. Lookup audio gain normalization
Thanks for pointing this out. We are a young channel and working out the tech. We will do better going forward!

Perfect plane to land on overflow. I suspect a 172 or your Skymaster would have ended up jam side down.
I suspect that you are right about landing something with fixed gear...
Client: "Hello?"
Tom: "Good news, buddy, insurance is buying your plane and you can forget about my commission!"

There should be a prize for that. Hum... Thanks for watching!
Here is what we know about the Lake Buccaneer engine failure and how we got it off the ice - ua-cam.com/video/sDjojQN-unM/v-deo.html
How did they get the sea plane to it's final destination after landing it on the lake with no engine power?
It was picked up by a helicopter and flown to Muskoka for installation of a new engine.
We are doing a follow up video that will cover this. It should be out by next week.

So slow in telling the story, makes that old plane seem fast. Boring boring boring. Put your love fest in a separate video and get on with it.
