Cessna Skymaster Annual
Every certified aircraft requires an annual inspection in order to maintain its Certificate of Airworthiness. This process can strike dread into the hearts and wallets of aircraft owners but I am here to tell you that the annual inspection is a very good thing and something that we should embrace (literally). Join me as I have a good chat with Blaine Field from Brant Aero as we discuss aircraft annual inspections and specifically, my pride and joy, C-GRBR.

MORE INFO & TOMAIR DISCLAIMER
I fly for fun and adventure and I strive to be the best, safest and most professional pilot that can be at all times but I am far from perfect. I have not been flying for a long time (since April 2015) but I always strive to be better. This channel is part of that process and another piece of the puzzle for me. I fly with as many people as I can and I seek out instructors and mentors whenever possible and I recommend that you do as well. I make sure that everyone I share the cockpit with with fits my style of flying and learning and that they can help me take my adventure higher.
Producing this UA-cam channel has made me grow as a pilot and for that I am truly thankful. Scouring through all the footage has shown me my strengths and weaknesses and that process has been humbling to say the least. I recommend videoing your own flights, watching them with an open mind and maybe even sharing them. There has been a lot of great feedback and wisdom in the comments on my videos as well. I always appreciate the constructive and almost always positive feedback. Keep it coming!
Please note that my videos are highly edited and some of the context of these flights is altered in order to keep the story moving. These videos are for entertainment purposes only and should not be considered a replacement for professional instruction by a certified flight instructor.

TP51 Mustang Forced Landing Debrief

Unfortunately my good friend and aviation mentor Paul recently had to make a forced landing in his beautiful TP51 Mustang replica. Spoiler Alert - He walked away completely uninjured but, unfortunately, the aircraft is a different story... There was an engine fire and, in Paul's words, "I had to put it on the ground quickly as the cockpit was rapidly becoming an un livable environment". Paul gr...

    If I can get my hands on one of these beautiful aircraft I hope I can get one that has not suffered this sort of hack job. The GNS 430/530 in the center is great - even necessary - but the rest is a real shame.

    hi. just looking at your video of the 337. I actually own its sister ship G BFGH. serial 081 also Rennes manufactured Ive owned GH for 40 years !!! she was supplied by Northair at Leeds Bradford. I also remember G FAST. your machine also was at Northair and was used by Glen Stuart who was their sales manager. Rumour has it that Glen would take off and roll the aeroplane. All very spectacular but I never actually saw him do this !

      @tomairtv 2 місяці тому

      Hi Peter. Wow, this is very interesting. Do you have photos of G-BFGH? C-GRBR was SN 0083 so they would be VERY similar indeed. Is yours similarly configured? Does it have boots? Which A/P? How much flight time? When I bought mine it had the original Rolls Royce / Continental engines with the RR valve covers. I assume you are probably NOT on the original engines still but who knows? Is Glen Stuart still around? So many questions... Do you mind shooting me an email to tom@tomair.tv with your contact details. I would love to know more.

    Here's a question. How is her single engine performance? I need something that can maintain 3,500 ft MSL on a 30° C Day on a single engine. I had an engine failure late one night over the Smoky Mountains in a Beechcraft Bonanza. Thankfully I was right overhead of a major airport so it was no issue to make it in, but had I been 10 or 15 miles away, I would have been putting it into a dark hole in the mountains.

    • @tomairtv
      @tomairtv 2 місяці тому

      Single engine performance is not great but you could definitely maintain level flight at 3,500' on the day you describe as doing as you were not too heavy.

      @tomairtv Unfortunately, I'd probably be within 300lbs of MGTOW. I love the Skymaster. I've always thought it was one of the coolest looking airplanes in the sky. But I think I'll end up looking for a partner on a Cessna 340 or maybe even a 414 just because of that small mountain range. My main mission is a 1000nm one way flight.

    Hello from Australia. Is there an active or completed TSBC report on this incident? Wasn’t able to locate on their website. I’m curious that there was no reference to an official investigation in your final video.

    • @tomairtv
      @tomairtv 2 місяці тому

      It was considered a Category 5 Incident with no physical contact injury or damage / destruction to the airframe, so it did not qualify for any further investigation. The TSB in Canada does not work like the NTSB in the US nor is it mandated or funded in the same ways.

    Beautiful A/C. I am totally jealous of the chromate. I installed WAT OR5002V LED Tail Position/Anti-Collision Light Assy on my 77 337G as I had a bad power pack AND flash tube. I had extra power pack, but the strobe head cost made no sense. Easy install. Removed some wire and connected it right up. Hope you got yours fixed. By the way it is stupidly (like painfully) bright. The STC was easy. Still have comet flash tip strobes but put in the LED replacement bulbs in the mounts.

      Cheap? I've always loved the 337 but was afraid to purchase one. I've always pictured an outrageous annual or it being down because one of the engines crapped out. You didn't have any gotcha's pop-up on you?

    • @tomairtv
      @tomairtv 4 місяці тому

      @@muhammadsteinberg Oh, I have had lots of $$ repairs come up for sure but for the most part I saw them coming and could prepare well in advance. I bought my 337 VERY CHEAP and at that time, I was well aware that it had corrosion issues in both engines from sitting for a long time. Early on I had to put two engines in and I had some issues with the hydraulic power pack and the gear as well and that was painful. Since then it has been a constant battle keeping the gremlins at bay but after the first 4-5 years I feel that I have reached a point where I now know what is coming down the pipe and can plan accordingly. Any aircraft is going to be costly to own and operate in this day and age and a twin doubly so. It is a choice I make and not always an easy one.

    • @muhammadsteinberg
      @muhammadsteinberg 4 місяці тому

      @tomairtv When I was stationed at March AFB in the early 80's the AeroClub acquired an O-2. Still had a Communications rig occupying the back if I remember accurately. I immediately fell in love with the airframe. Still to this day the 0-2/337 airframe is the most beautiful airframe imo with the 310 being a close 2nd. I've been biten hard with a costly 1st annual after purchase, gotcha expense. As much as I'd love to have an 0-2/337 the cost scares me. Thanks for sharing your experience.

    I worked on that plane (removing and replacing access panels, my first job ever!) when the aircraft as brand new at Sherburn in Elmet in 1977. I got the treat of a ride to Humberside in it with Glenn Stewart who was I think (it was a long time ago) the Cessna rep in the UK at the time. My backside was possibly the first or certainly one of them that ever sat in the right hand seat. And yes, I got to fly it! I Where is she exactly? I would .love to see her again. Oh yea, I was 17 when I flew in her, I'm 64 this year. She was G-FAST in 1977 so it does not tally with what you said. I think I can just about make out Dukeries aviation on the paperwork you showed, that's Sherburn in Elmet and where I worked.

      Hello Mike. Wow, I am so excited that you reached out on this video. The fact that you knew C-GRBR when she was just a wee pup is amazing to me. She is currently based in Brantford Ontario about an hour south west of Toronto. If you are ever in the neighbourhood I would be happy to show her to you or give you another ride. I am pretty certain it is the same original seats so you would feel right at home. Can you do me a favour and send your contact details to my email on the web site www.tomair.tv so I have those? I am trying to amalgamate the history of C-GRBR all in one place and you are a part of that so... Thanks again for reaching out. Have a great day!

      @@tomairtv I sent you a message on your contact form. Not sure what's going on with the registration, she was definitely G-FAST when I met her back then. The paperwork I can see was from our Netherthorpe workshop, I worked at Sherburn in Elmet which would be classed as Leeds so that tallies. I would love to take a ride, it's not too expensive to get to Toronto and I could make it part of a visit to Canada. Never been there before but I'm led to believe it's a paradise for us nature lovers. So maybe, one day! Maybe time it for when you need to go out and I could tag along? I know she's not a cheap chick to keep fed and watered!

    By far the BEST review of this incredible airplane! We are an Air Force family. My son went to the Air Force Academy here in the States. This is still the plane that I wish he had now he is a civilian. He doesn't currently own one. Last time we flew into Orca Island he piloting a 172.. we got to see a Skymaster at run up / takeoff. You have a distinctive sound for sure. Appreciate your detail,and explaining thoroughly the uniqueness of take off and landings. Again thanks for just an enjoyable video on an incredible airplane.
