- Jam Setup with Volca Drum and E-4
Welcome to Jam Setup, the segment where I show you my process of preparing to jam on various pieces of electronic music gear. Today we're working with the Volca Drum and E-4, alongside a MIDI keyboard for the E-4, and while a fairly simple setup, it does require quite a few cables. However, with the exception of a weird sync shift issue, the setup went pretty smoothly, and I hope you're looking forward to the jam tomorrow! Enjoy the video :)

The E-4 is a fun piece of kit. I’m not a vocalist but have had a lot of fun using it.
Same!
Nice to see you do the setup! A right-angle adapter for the mic into the E-4 might help when you've got the keyboard as well.
Yeah I need one of those pretty badly lol.
Yeah, love the idea for setup vids. When I was first buying gear I did a lot of searches for "how to sync ABC to XYZ." So hopefully Jam Setup will be good for organic growth for ya.
(NTS-1 is being delivered this week)
Thanks so much! Enjoy your NTS-1 :)
The looper start point is off because you have to hit the record button and play the keyboard at the same time.
Can you make more videos with the looper? I couldn't get warm with it too lol
That's interesting! I'll give it my best shot but no promises haha.
Cable mess is a major hassle when you have limited space for your music gear. I so often lose motivation or forget my initial musical idea if I have to reroute half of my setup and play a game of Sokoban with all the electronic boxes on my shelf (which is situated in the "home office" part of the living room 😅). I try to keep a notebook so I can jot down ideas for trying out this or that combination of gear when I don't have the time or courage to plug and unplug and play and record and put everything back in a tidy order so the Missus won't go mad (and she's pretty lenient already, I'm fortunate 😍), but I guess nothing beats having a dedicated, spacious den where you can fiddle with your equipment, make a mess of the room, then leave 😂.
Absolutely, having a permanent space for a setup is the dream!
Hello.
You can Drill holes in the plate or table and lead the cables through the holes from top to bottom back to the corresponding devices and you won't have any tangled cables.
I have the same problem with mine when trying to sync the looper. Such a shame, I hope someone can find a fix or we get an update.
Yeah, it they can fix it I'll be using it a lot more!
Seems a pain the loop starts half a beat after you originally recorded it, damn!
Yeah, gotta get that figured out!
It seems like when you restart the volca, the loops sync thereafter - So confusing why it would be like that. I wonder if the t8 has the same issue or not.
I'll be finding out soon!
Jam Setup - a perfect channel enhancement FB. I have those three pieces of gear (though only the kid is currently available to me) and now I’ve found a house with plenty of space to claim back a studio - Yay! Hoping to be in situ during May. Cheers. Lee
Glad you're finally going to have a studio setup!
i think you have to record it first then start it up fresh then it syncs which is a bit of a bummer for a live set up
Yeah definitely strange haha.
Thanks for highlight the issue with the looper. I've also come across this and are yet to work out why the loop does't start at the right time when it loops back round. It seems to be in time. Failed to suss it as yet, but will have another go later. It could be something to do with what is mentioned on page 27 of the PDF manual, where it states: "Sets the clock timing at which the schedule starts." with a number of options. Then "the timing to start synchronization is different depending on what the clock is synchronized to.
External MIDI: Synchronization starts when the external device starts.
SYNC IN (trigger): Synchronization starts when you press the record button."
Is it the same midi-adapter as the one for the NTS-1?
Yes it is :)
Which stereo splitter cable are you using for the mix out from the E-4?
Just a basic hosa one, just to plug it into the separate L/R inputs on my interface.
@@FreeBeat Thanks.
I think i read somewhere the korg and roland sync use different rate , i think korg is 16 and roland is 8
Did you ever solve the sync issue?
🤘🏻💯
Thanks for watching!
Hello There.
General TheValleys
Musical output is always what I'm interested in whenever the word "jam" is mentioned. Personally don't care how devices are chained myself, but perhaps people are interested in I/O and bussing specifically. Perhaps they need a video for this rather than a jam.
Regardless, you cater for both with your content, but don't split the difference mate :)
Glad to hear that haha. And yeah, Sunday Sessions isn't gonna change, but these setup videos will start popping up from time to time, especially if it's a new setup for me!
Great idea, aight? 😉
That 8th note lag would drive me mad
Yeah haha I'm hoping I can figure it out, or Roland fixes it if it is indeed a glitch!
Hello. You have to sync with a right Clock Source. Sync the Volca over Midi in, with a Device that send a propper midiclock ( DAW or Hardware sequencer or other Gear) and the E-4 synced with the Volcas sync out. I use a Donner B1 Bass Synth as Clock Source. The B1 has DIN Midi out. That Works 4 me.
I always get your notifications instantly I swear 😂 love them.
That's awesome haha, thanks for watching!
I like your harmonic 1 2 3 4 !
Sounds funny. I also love you
walking us through your
set-ups. GREAT 👏👏👏
Thanks so much!
Glad you figured the sync thing out! The offbeat thing is weird tho 😅
Could it be that there's a count-in thing before the looper starts?
P.s.: for the cable mess maybe you would want a 90° cable or adapter, so it doesn't get in your way?
You are going down the crazy-road just as I am! :)
It's a good road!
The E-4 looks awesome.
Seems really possible to find in Canada though! Out of stock at all the normal haunts
Hope you can get one soon!
@@FreeBeat Found one in MTL! Gonna have it sipped to TO. Super excited. I have the VT-4 but this seems to be both more portable, and more feature rich with the scatter and looper
The nicenth like! Love these videos, i was torn b/t the nts-1 and e-4 but figured I could do more with the nts-1 and it was cheaper. Your gear of the year vid pushed me over the line. THanks! It's so fun!
wow really like that mic input on that e4
Yeah it's so much fun!
Just got my E4. Holy crap...once I figured out the details on setting it up right, the looper alone is adding so much to my DAWless rig! I'm not a bad singer, and have really wanted to add a vocal element to my jams. This is perfect for that...made for it, really.
Thanks for convincing me to take the plunge!
I'm so happy you're liking it!
Nice! Are you having the same looping start issues that Free Beat Documents in this video? (Watch from 4.30 ish) I'm having the same issue and not sure how to solve it...
@@johnwood5793 When synced using the sync in jack, it was very difficult to lock it down in time. Using MIDI, it works great. I adjusted the start recording parameter to a whole note instead of the default 8th note.
My problem now is when using MIDI, the autotune glitches when recording. I think it's receiving unwanted MIDI data along with clock data. I need to figure that out.
@@mikemeengs5720 Great - thanks for getting back to me - I'll have another play over the weekend and give that a spin :)
@@johnwood5793 It's a blast. I video recorded a new jam for my channel where I'm using it for vocals last night.
I will add that when using sync in, if you stop what you are doing and restart again, the E4 will be out of sync again. Bleh. Using MIDI, that's no problem...you can mess with it all you want, and it always stays in sync. Nice!
Have fun!
Love your channel!
Thanks so much!
