How an Air Intake System Works

  • Here’s how a car’s air intake system works to provide air to your car’s engine.
    The air intake system starts with the air collector that feeds cool air to the air box. The air box houses the air filter. Air is then drawn through a fixed tube that houses the mass airflow sensor, which measures the amount of air flowing through. The air then heads through flexible tubing and a plastic resonator before going to the electronically controlled throttle body.
    The throttle body is controlled by the ECU, and primarily takes its input commands from the driver through the accelerator pedal. It also houses the throttle position sensor, so the ECU knows what position the butterfly valve is opened at. The throttle body is controlled by a small gear train and a DC electric motor.
    After the throttle body, air heads into the air intake plenum, which collects the air and splits it into individual ports for each cylinder. The intake plenum bolts to the air intake manifold, which have specially designed runners that allow for the mixture of air and fuel just before entering the cylinder head, above the valves.
    This video will take you inside the air intake system on an Infiniti G35 with a 3.5L V6 VQ35DE engine. All of the air intake components are disassembled and cut open to show the internal workings. An explanation of the closed loop throttle control system, accelerator and throttle position sensors and air intake runner system are also described.

    I had a mouse chew up my air filter and make a nest inside the throttle body. Clogged the plenum open, so when I tried to stop at a stop sign it was like pushing the brake and gas pedal at the same time. Not fun! If you live in a mouse area make sure you check this part of your car once in a while. Also congrats on 100k. Been here since the beginning!

    Dear Speedkar99: have a technical question for you! In some designs, the air intake tube draws air from within engine compartment, while others have a more elaborate design that takes air from a gap where outside air is channeled. Is one design better than the other? Thank you in advance. Watching your video is the highlight of my day!

    • @speedkar99
      @speedkar99  5 років тому +2

      Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed the video. The trade-off between the air intake location is cooler air comes in if drawn externally, however it's subject to sucking in water or debris if it's in a spot that is prone as such.
      A longer tube may also lead to some airflow losses and the engine bay packaging and air filter accessibility also are factors that are considered when designing an intake.

    Coolant lines at the throttle body are to heat the intake air at idle to improve fuel efficiency immediately after (cold) startup, to combat the phenomenon of clowns still "warming up" their cars in 2018. It's been true for decades now that the best way to warm up an internal combustion engine vehicle is to drive it!

    • @michaelserrano7097
      @michaelserrano7097 5 років тому +5

      I don't warm my cars...i let the motor oil and trans oil to flow and lubricate my cars properly before a take off. Another thing that a like about " warming" my cars, is to let the revolutions go down ,that way when i put my car y gear, the trans hit the gear smoothly. Only takes me about 5 minutes to reach operational temperature.

    Is there an advantage by using frozen underwear as opposed to room temeperature soft underwear. I have observed it was frozen solid and this would indicate high moisture if not even direct water content in the underwear. Is this a fire prevention measure? Perhaps it works by lowering fuel temperaturre below it vaporisation temperature for a given ambient air pressure? All in all it i sna interesting idea.

    I feel sad for his brother. He didn't get a chance to wear his underwear since his brother become a automobile mechanic. It's feeling of great comfort and free on air.
