How an Air Intake System Works

- Here’s how a car’s air intake system works to provide air to your car’s engine.
The air intake system starts with the air collector that feeds cool air to the air box. The air box houses the air filter. Air is then drawn through a fixed tube that houses the mass airflow sensor, which measures the amount of air flowing through. The air then heads through flexible tubing and a plastic resonator before going to the electronically controlled throttle body.
The throttle body is controlled by the ECU, and primarily takes its input commands from the driver through the accelerator pedal. It also houses the throttle position sensor, so the ECU knows what position the butterfly valve is opened at. The throttle body is controlled by a small gear train and a DC electric motor.
After the throttle body, air heads into the air intake plenum, which collects the air and splits it into individual ports for each cylinder. The intake plenum bolts to the air intake manifold, which have specially designed runners that allow for the mixture of air and fuel just before entering the cylinder head, above the valves.
This video will take you inside the air intake system on an Infiniti G35 with a 3.5L V6 VQ35DE engine. All of the air intake components are disassembled and cut open to show the internal workings. An explanation of the closed loop throttle control system, accelerator and throttle position sensors and air intake runner system are also described.

When I see Speedkar99 posted new video, I dropped everything
Thanks I'm glad you enjoy my videos!
@@speedkar99 the most entertaining yet informative car show
This guy explains stuff that no one else has explained as well and should be used for mechanics courses.
I always appreciate the time and effort you put in making these videos...Thanks man!!
Thanks for the kind feedback
I always appreciate the good use of my missing socks underwear and tooth brushes
Simply the best. Cutting things open makes it easier for me to understand how things work. Thank you, more power to your channel. Please do turbos/superchargers
Thanks. Cutting things open is the best way to learn. Would you like to lend me a supercharger for that video 😉?
I'm gonna forward your name for Nobel Prize ...👍
That would be awesome
also iam😀
Excellent explanation. Someone get this man a cake.
Thanks. A cake would be awesome!
@@speedkar99 Yeah...until it's time to brush your teeth.
Gotta promote good oral health and hygiene
That MAF sensor explanation part ... just loving this !!
Glad you appreciate how this often neglected system works
Eesh. I hope you were wearing your brother's jacket! LOL
Haha good one.
@@speedkar99 I typed that when I saw the fuel splashing. That must've been a smelly day.
Your brothers toothbrush, sock AND frozen underwear?? Thumbs up and Sub'd
Haha thanks. I thought I edited that frozen underwear out 🤣
Only video that actually names the plenum for what it is. Couldnt figure out the actual name until this video. Thank you for the detail!
Awesome video as always!
I had a mouse chew up my air filter and make a nest inside the throttle body. Clogged the plenum open, so when I tried to stop at a stop sign it was like pushing the brake and gas pedal at the same time. Not fun! If you live in a mouse area make sure you check this part of your car once in a while. Also congrats on 100k. Been here since the beginning!
Good tip
Better the intake than the airbox for the cabin blower! Happened to mum's Rav4 during COVID when she was immobile for weeks at a time in the winter, in the Laurentians. The smell...ouf.
You sir are a legend! Explained everything in perfect detail yet so concise and to the point -- better than most 'auto engineers' imho! Keep up the great work! Subd!
I've been watching a lot of your videos. Thank you for these great car repair videos!
You are welcome
Simple and informative!
That's my style. Thanks
This guy just taught me more in 1 video then every other videos i watched atleast 15 videos lol this dude is the shit just jumps right in no bs
Life in Toronto is...fast! 🚗

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoy my series
My man…You just earned a new subscriber w/Notifications, a thumbs up, a share & a comment. It’s the very least a person could do after you took us all to school!
Awesome thanks
One of the best tutorial videos I have seen on UA-cam (with my brothers socks and tooth brush 😂😂) reminds me of my college days. Keep up mate
Another great video Speedkar99. Thank you. Very dedicated making this in that freezing weather!
You are welcome. And yes it was quite cold but I worked right through it. #dedication 😉
He explained everything to the point that even I understand…. Great video 👍🏼
Im watching this video hiding im my work bathroom. Love this channel!

Get back to work!
hey great video, I liked the "drive by wire" explanation. Well done :)
Thank you
That's fun to watch. Very informative and in depth. You crack me up with that toothbrush. Thank you.
Glad you were entertained
Very, Very well done video. Thank you so much for the detailed descriptions, you certainly know your stuff!
Such a wonderful video
A lot of newer systems use magnetic Hall-effect sensors for throttle position for a contact-less solution... Similar to cam & crank position, wheel speed sensors, etc.
Awesome video!
Thanks !
You are an absolute MVP of the internet. Outstanding explanation
Great video thanks!
You make very well videos, just great esp cut open all that things 💪

Great video. Clear explanation with no wasted words. Thank you. May I have your brother's other sock?
Cool. Video. Thanks. Learned a lot
Glad you learned something!
It’s Freezing in NY too. Let’s do a Feb meetup someplace where it’s 80!
Yeah its chilly out in Canada, though to be honest not recently polar vortex chilling, so I try to work outside for a few hours at a time.
That floating tuthbrush was cool!
It sure was...o was about to point to something and it just floated there
Nice video, very nice
You are welcome
excellent job, thank you and thank your brother :)
Dear Speedkar99: have a technical question for you! In some designs, the air intake tube draws air from within engine compartment, while others have a more elaborate design that takes air from a gap where outside air is channeled. Is one design better than the other? Thank you in advance. Watching your video is the highlight of my day!
Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed the video. The trade-off between the air intake location is cooler air comes in if drawn externally, however it's subject to sucking in water or debris if it's in a spot that is prone as such.
A longer tube may also lead to some airflow losses and the engine bay packaging and air filter accessibility also are factors that are considered when designing an intake.
best chanell ever
Thanks
Another excellent video. (Now I know where my toothbrush went!!)
Whoops

Great video, I was wondering something, and maybe you could answer; Could I switch an instrument cluster say like the s2000 cluster into a toyota camry? (I don’t plan on putting one in a camry just as an example)
I'd be interested in how that works. I'm sure you'd need a microcontroller to translate the ECU signals from the Toyota into the Honda cluster
Thank you very good
Thanks
Thanks!!!
You are welcome
Brother has been successfully bamboozled
Perfect.
Thanks
Hello dear... Do you can shipping the alternator for same engine.. V6 3.5l fit on Nissan 350z or g35 2005 infinity...? To UAE Dubai
Coolant lines at the throttle body are to heat the intake air at idle to improve fuel efficiency immediately after (cold) startup, to combat the phenomenon of clowns still "warming up" their cars in 2018. It's been true for decades now that the best way to warm up an internal combustion engine vehicle is to drive it!
I don't warm my cars...i let the motor oil and trans oil to flow and lubricate my cars properly before a take off. Another thing that a like about " warming" my cars, is to let the revolutions go down ,that way when i put my car y gear, the trans hit the gear smoothly. Only takes me about 5 minutes to reach operational temperature.
You've just posted this comments 6 hours ago, and you're not aware that we are in 2019 since the last month and a half.
I always thought it's to warm up the throttle body to prevent ice from forming. You know, moisture in the air, hitting cold metal, water condensate and freezes.
@@mrpeter887 Carbs weren't warmed for the first seventy years or so of motoring, and I doubt the fuel (or storage tanks!) were better then than now.
@@PickyOne You should be congratulating me because that's the first time I've made that mistake this year, you pedantic fuck!
Great video...you sure know you stuff..my 2002 Chevy gives me a hard tome starting on a cold engine..once I start it...it will start first crank no mater how cold it is..its just the first start...any advise?
Fuel pump?
@@speedkar99 Thanks for responding...that's what i was afraid of...it's a pickup truck so that's a expensive fix...
Nothing to comment about.. everything is perfect.
Perfect!
Congrats . Please, could you send a pdf about this class. THANKS since now, Pedro.

@@speedkar99 Good evening . Don't you use this toothbrush? Don't you.😆😆😆😆
I've never ever seen anyone go so deep in stripping an engine in 3 minutes of video using his brothers personal belongings. With skills like this I'm sure you'll be able to get a new toothbrush in no time!
Your comedic chops are on par with Kar's toothbrushing of once-expensive metal and plastic. Rock on.
brother you'r greate...👏😍
Thanks
Nice.
any suggestions of good impact wrenches?
No sorry
Feel sorry for your brother. I would like to see your face when he finds out where all his stuff is going missing 😂
Meh
What he doesn't know won't hurt him
Is there an advantage by using frozen underwear as opposed to room temeperature soft underwear. I have observed it was frozen solid and this would indicate high moisture if not even direct water content in the underwear. Is this a fire prevention measure? Perhaps it works by lowering fuel temperaturre below it vaporisation temperature for a given ambient air pressure? All in all it i sna interesting idea.
I agree with your observations.
Meanwhile the underwear just happened to be sitting on the windshield cowl and was the closest convient thing to sap up the mess. It's not everyday do you just have your brothers underwear just sitting there on your car's windshield you know...
I think your brother hates you now, lol. Nice explaination keep up
He doesn't even know,..
My car lexus rx400 h 2008 has PO 171 , how to check vacuum leak ? should I replace fuel injector, if so , can I do by myself
See my EVAP system video. P0171 isn't related to the fuel injectors
Good ol VQ35DE, painted the intake plenum gold on my 350z, the factory finish looks so nasty after a few years
Bruh.....I'm speechless

Haha good one!
Was expecting your brother's underwear, not disappointed.
Haha it was frozen
hi i want to know if an ebay toyota techstream software is safe for a car cause ive heard of the ecu being bricked and if you have a link for the product please send it!
Its fine for changing settings but I would not use it to flash an ecu
Brother' socks, brother's toothbrushes, brother' underwear...

This guy is intelligent, should have been an engineer
I am a mechanical engineer. This is just my hobby
How did you learn all of this?
By trial and error taking things apart and learning as I go, and reading up on the internet.
We don't learn this in engineering school
Why is it important for the ecu to know air is coming in. Wouldn't the motor still run as long as it gets air?
It need to know how much in order to get the correct air to fuel ratio for optimal combustion
"...then im gonna use my brother toothbrush and clean it""" lol
Haha
It makes for a good throttle body cleaner though
What site do you get your schematics
Google images and I make them in paint 🤣
Alldata is usually a good resource too
how oil pum works next please
Please see my engine lubrication video
I feel sad for his brother. He didn't get a chance to wear his underwear since his brother become a automobile mechanic. It's feeling of great comfort and free on air.
