Joan Jett got her first guitar at 13 as a Xmas present from her parents and was musically influenced by T-Rex, Bowie, Iggy Pop & SUZI QUATRO. At 15 years old she started the FIRST ALL GIRL punk/metal influenced hard rock band in 1975 (originally with Mickey Steele on bass and lead vocals, though she was fired and later joined the Bangles) which also featured a teenage Lita Ford on lead guitar and vocalist Cherie Currie (However, FANNY was the first all girl ROCK band but punk had not come into the music scene yet until the mid 70’s). In 1976 they debuted their first album “The Runaways” which spawned the classic song “Cherry Bomb”, which Joan Jett wrote as an audition song for vocalist Cherie Currie, alluding to her name and the fact that they were all “teenage firecrackers” (Cherie Currie, 16, wore a corset, fishnet stockings, black underwear and high heels on stage which gave them the reputation as “jailbait rock”, the other girls HATED IT). Although this was their most recognized song, it certainly does not define them as a band. Their album debuted the same time that Heart debuted their album “Dreamboat Annie”. Both bands had to deal with sexism and misogyny from the male dominated genre of hard rock, although Heart was backed by male band members, the Runaways got it worse being ALL teenage girls. They released “Queens of Noise” in 1977 and toured Japan where they were HUGE, they were NEVER taken seriously in America. Lead vocalist Cherie Currie quit the band during the tour making Joan the front girl of the band. After the tour they recorded what I think is their best album, “Waiting for the Night'' which Joan Jett wrote most of the songs, along with some songs written by Lita Ford. It was a punk/metal influenced album after touring in England and being exposed to the punk rock scene, later touring with the Ramones, Cheap Trick, etc. By 1978 there was heavy drug abuse and tension among the remaining 3 members of the band (Joan, Lita and drummer Sandy West) after they released their 4th and final studio album “And now, the Runaways” (which featured the song “Black Leather” written by Steve Jones and Paul Cook from the Sex Pistols). Joan Jett gravitated towards a Punk sound and both Lita and Sandy towards a more heavy metal sound. By Spring 1979 the band broke up and Joan Jett began her solo career which would last till this day who is still touring. Later Lita Ford would also find mainstream success and she also is still touring!

There was a rift between Cherie & Joan when they were recording their 2nd album. The song Queens of noise was written for Cherie to sing, however Scott Anderson had impregnated Cherie (statutory yes) & Cherie went to get an abortion & Joan recorded the song with her singing it. That hurt Cherie & it took awhile for them to get back on speaking terms.

Nice to see everyone letting you know about the other forgot runaway star Michael Steele (born Susan Thomas[1] on June 2, 1955) is an American retired musician, best known as the bassist for The Bangles. Under the name Micki Steele, she was a founding member of The Runaways. Joan didnt leave the band to go solo Cherrie did solo albums also , Currie and her identical twin sister, Marie Currie, released the album Messin' With The Boys in 1980 as Cherie & Marie Currie. Their duet "Since You Been Gone" reached number 95 on US charts. She is also known for her role in the 1980 film Foxes. Sandy west was the drummer and had her own band but passed away 2006. Jacqueline Louise Fuchs (born December 20, 1959) is an American former musician. Under her stage name Jackie Fox, she played bass guitar for the pioneering all-girl teenage rock band The Runaways. In July 2015, six months after Kim Fowley's death, Fuchs alleged that Fowley raped her on New Year's Eve 1975 at a party following a Runaways performance at an Orange County club. Sixteen years old at the time, Fuchs was reportedly given Quaaludes by a man she thought was a roadie and, while she was incapacitated, Fowley raped her in full view of a group of partygoers and her bandmates Currie, West, and Jett. Lita Ford was not present.[12] Look Away, a documentary about sexual abuse in the rock music industry, features Fuchs' story. Rock and roll is a vicious game.

The Runaways were put together by rock producer Kim Fowley... he hired Joan Jett (guitar) and Sandy West (drums) in 1975 and they recruited Cherrie Currie (vocals) and Lita Ford (lead guitar)... Jackie Fox (bass) joined last and she was the bass player in the video from 1976... their self-titled debut album which included 'Cherry bomb'... All the girls were underage (17 at the time... they knew they were 'jailbait')
Lita Ford said in her autobiography that she realized her bandmates were lesbians and freaked out initially and quit... but they called her and begged Ford to come back, so she did.
Unfortunately, The Runaways blew up so fast by 1977 that fame led to drug abuse and infighting within the band... singer Cherrie Currie quit The Runaways in 1977 and Kim Fowley was also let go... Cherrie Currie never recovered her singing career but performs occasionally.
Joan Jett took over lead vocals but The Runaways disbanded by 1979.
Joan Jett wanted to start a solo career but was rejected by every major label by 1980 in her early 20's... She and manager Kenny Laguna formed Joan Jett & The Blackhearts and recorded independently, selling records at her gigs ... Joan Jett scored a #1 single "I love rock n' roll" by 1982.
Lita Ford also began a solo career and wanted to establish herself as a lead guitarist... Her debut solo album 'Out for blood' was released in 1983... She said she had tried to reconnect w/ Joan Jett but nothing came of it...
Drummer Sandy West died in 2006 from cancer.

The Runaways were an American rock band who recorded and performed from 1975 to 1979. Formed in 1975 in Los Angeles, the band released four studio albums and one live album during its run. Among their best-known songs are "Cherry Bomb", "Hollywood", "Queens of Noise" and a cover version of the Velvet Underground's "Rock & Roll". Never a major success in the United States, the Runaways became a sensation overseas, especially in Japan, thanks to the single "Cherry Bomb".
    The band was.......
    - Joan Jett 1975-1979 rhythm guitarlead guitar (1975, 1976) lead and backing vocalsbass (1977)
    - Sandy West 1975-1979 (died 2006) drums backing and occasional lead vocals
    - Micki Steele 1975 bass lead vocals (not on any of their official recordings she left the group before they got a record deal and eventually joined the group The Bangles)
    - Lita Ford 1975-1976 1976-1979 lead guitar backing vocals (from 1977) rhythm guitar (1977, 1979) bass and lead vocals (1978)
    - Cherie Currie 1975-1977 lead vocals
    - Jackie Fox 1975-1976 1976-1977 base and backing vocals
    - Vicki Blue 1977-1978 base and backing vocals
Currie and her identical twin sister, Marie Currie, released the album Messin' With The Boys in 1980 as Cherie & Marie Currie. Their duet "Since You Been Gone" reached number 95 on US charts (Since You Been Gone" is a song written by former Argent guitarist Russ Ballard and first released on his 1976 album Winning. It was covered by Rainbow the band with Ronnie James Dio in 1979 and released as a single from their album Down to Earth. She is also known for her role in the 1980 film Foxes with Scott Baio (of Happy Days) and Jodie Foster.
A biographical film about the band film called (the Runaways) , inspired by Currie's memoir, was released in 2010. Jett was one of the executive producers of the film. Actresses Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning starred as Jett and Currie, respectively.
    - Try the video for Cherry Bomb starring Dakota Fanning & Kirsten Stewart that was made for the movie, Dakota Fanning and Kirsten Stewart are really playing the music and singing they learned how to play it and sing it.
Also try these hit Runaway songs
( look for a live performance of each of these songs if possible)
    - Queens of Noise
    - Born to Be Bad
    - I Love Playin' with Fire
    - Neon Angels on the Road to Ruin
    - Johnny Guitar
    - School Days
    - Waitin' for the Night
    - Eight Days a Week (Beetle cover)
    - Mama Weer All Crazee Now (Slade cover & in the '80s done by Quiet Riot)
    - Black Leather
    PS
Cherie Currie didn't want to dress in lingerie and didn't want to sing the song Cherry Bomb considering lyrics were too rude for someone as young as she was, but the manager Kim Frawley made her do it. They were all underage around 15,16 and 17 .

What's really nuts is when you discover that they were all underage at just 16 and 17. Lead singer Cherie Currie had just turned 16, and was in the 10th grade at high school.

Now that you've seen the vid, imagine this: They were only about 17 or so and on tour in Japan (the vids of them that exist of their shows are 9 times out 10 from their Japan tour). Their manager, Kim Fowley, was NOT a good guy. They were basically running around with little to no supervision. They weren't that well known here, but were HUGE in Japan. This vid didn't show it, but Cherie had a neat little trick that she always did with the mic's cord during the instrumental part.

Before the Runaways hit it big, Micki Steele was their bassist, she later joined the Bangles. Steele's departure from the group has been given several interpretations-her own account being that she was fired by manager Kim Fowley for refusing his sexual propositions and calling the band's debut single "Cherry Bomb" stupid. Another comment I’ve read was she wasn’t a fan of Cheri Curry’s sexualized stage costumes as she didn’t think they’d be taken seriously as musicians, and she and the other girls hated the label “jail bait rock”.

Yeah def not a close up black underwear crotch shot of a minor 16 year old who Scott Anderson would later impregnate and Cherie had to stop recording their 2nd album Queens of Noise so she could have an abortion and Joan Jett recorded lead vocals on the song even though it was meant for Cherie and this caused a riff between them for a bit.

One of the best all girl groups ever. Made a huge dent in the rock scene for women. Joan Jett & Lita Ford kicked ass in this band but the band as a whole were so influential on so many women in rock. Love strong women that aren't afraid to flip off the world . I really wish their management hadn’t decided right before their first performance to go to the lingerie store across the street and force the girls to look like tarts. They were never taken seriously from that point, although they certainly got a lot of attention. They had spent weeks on getting matching outfits made, which were then useless.

Their manager Kim Fowley REVELED in the jailbait aspect. He also allegedly r*ped bassist Jackie Fox when she was drugged and 16 years old. And yes it was sad that they were never taken seriously here in America because of the "image"
