I would like to add a few more differences between Taichi and Chiqong . Taichi is the application of the Chi in art form whereas Chiqong is the foundation which goes beyond chi. In other words Chiqong can be more spiritual by converting the chi into Shen which is the spirit energy. Chiqong is science while Taichi is an art or technology which uses the science.
Thank you so much for your very well worded explanation - that definitely adds more information to what I had to say so I'm very grateful for you taking the time to comment. :-)
This was a very well presented and informative video. I am a daily practitioner for more than a year and find Qigong a big part in my 80 year life. I am always discovering something new and that is what one should value in life. Thank You. CMJ Canada
Hi Charles, Thank you so much for your kind words. I'm delighted that you are practising and will be sure to tell my group of 30 seniors who I'm about to visit to teach them Qigong. They are only on week 4 and I'm still to convince some of them that they are not too old for this practice! You are an inspiration! :-)
This is so helpful especially now during the out break. I am recovery from an injury and PT is not available. Heard of Qi-Gong thru my acupuncturist and started looking up everything I could. This was the best info I found to explain the difference. Thank you. I have even put together a small group of mask wearing ladies to watch videos 6 feet apart in the park with the help of someone with a little experience to ensure we don't hurt ourselves to start but I love it and find it not only physically helpful but emotionally and psy as well. Thank you very much for putting this out there and I will certainly check out the rest of your information and have subscribed and am sending this out to all my neighbors. I think we could all use a little Qi-gong in this uncertain and scary time. Thank you
Hi Kim, Thank you so much for your very kind words and I'm so glad you are finding my videos helpful. It's fabulous to hear that you are sharing this with others as Qigong can be most helpful on both a physical and mental/emotional level in order to gently restore balance. Thank you for signing up and please get in touch if you have any questions at all as I'm here to help. Best wishes, Janice. :-)
Thanks for the excellent explainer. I've only just discovered Qigong - literally this week! Having done Tai Chi for a year 20 years ago, I'd been thinking of going back to it. But having problems with my hips, I think Qigong will be much more user friendly for me.
Hi Heather, I'm delighted that you found this video helpful. Qigong is the mother of Tai Chi and is probably more easily adapted to individual levels of movement and flexibility. To find out if you like it then try my free online video course here: spacetorelax.com/free-qigong-ecourse/. Videos will be sent to your email (check junk mail) every 2 days over the course of a week. Tai Chi for Health is also easy, for most folks, to learn. I am a certified instructor in tai chi for health and also have many years of practicing tai chi from a martial aspect. It really depends on how the tai chi instructor is presenting the class. I have many wheelchair folks take the Tai Chi for Arthritis program and benefit almost as much as those standing. Again, if the tai chi is presented from a martial aspect, then it would be more difficult for some folks, especially older. If it's presented from a health aspect, it becomes a little easier. Some movements are not as easy as they seem, but most folks can do them. I also mix into the lessons some qigong, especially in Sun style tai chi.
Hi Dennis. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. It's great that you help people who are wheelchair users with your Tai Chi. I think it's a huge benefit of both Tai Chi and Qigong that the methods can be adapted so easily to whatever an individual student needs. :-)
You are so welcome. If you ever want to join the live Qigong classes there is no charge and the one on Thursdays would be morning time in the USA. Here's the link: spacetorelax.com/qigong-online-class/. Warmest wishes, Janice.
i practice Chigong for the effects of a stoke after a brain tumor operation... the 5 specific movements : bear, deer, monkey, tiger and crane bird in a sitting position are simple and feel beneficial...
Sun style Tai Chi is a combination of Tai Chi and Qigong and is very useful for health application, especially Arthritis and balance issues. In reality, Tai Chi depends on how it is presented....martial aspect or from a health aspect and is easily modified for a fantastic exercise for seniors!
The single MOST IMPORTANT difference between Taiji Quan and Qigong is this. QIGONG cultivates qi, Taiji Quan UTILIZES qi for self defense. If you don't practice Qigong, your Taiji is just a bunch of dance moves. And most Taiji players have NO Qigong foundation.
This is glorious, I have been researching "what is the difference between tai chi and qigong?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Penmma Acclaimed Principality - (just google it )? It is a smashing one off product for discovering how to boost your chi energy without the normal expense. Ive heard some decent things about it and my m8 got great success with it.
Just wonderful, I have been researching "what does it mean to manipulate energy?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Fonebastian Unexpected Framework - (search on google ) ? It is a smashing exclusive product for learning powerful methods to build your Chi energy minus the headache. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my brother in law got excellent success with it.
I’m thinking of joining the Senior’s Centre & would like to learn one of these. I see there are 3 types of classes offered : Qi Gong, Wu Tai Chi & Taoist Tai Chi. I took Karate years ago which I know is not the same but I am not very familiar with the different forms of Tai Chi. I am a total ‘newbie’ so can anyone tell me which would likely be the best class to start in? I am 66 but in good shape because I do Aquafit once a week & easy line dancing plus I do a 20 min exercise routine every other day on my exercise ball & I walk my dog regularly whenever weather permits.
Hi Deb, I'm afraid I don't have much experience of Tai Chi either. What I would do is get clear in your mind of what exactly you would like to use these practices for and then contact the teacher (s) of each one explaining that. They will be able to point you in the right direction for sure. Whichever one you choose, I hope you enjoy the classes, any of which I'm sure you'll find both energising and relaxing. Best wishes, Janice.
Hi, Ideally you would want to learn from someone with many years of experience. You also need to decide what type of Qigong or Tai Chi you'd like to learn. If it's a medical form then if the person is qualified in Traditional Chinese Medicine too then that could be very helpful in bringing a greater understanding to your studies. Mainly though, you need to find someone who is kind, ethical and clear in their teaching style - someone who resonates with you. If you are looking for certification then check that their college or university has a good and long standing reputuation and that you'll easily be able to get insurance to teach once you graduate from that college. Best wishes with your practice and learning! Janice. :-)
Great video, but I think we should abandon this claim that Tai Chi is a martial art. From the many health & spiritual exercises I've looked into, I've noticed that all Chinese schools seem to be obsessed with claiming that theirs can make you a powerful fighter, on top of the core benefits. I don't know why this is so important to them. Tai Chi is excellent for cultivating the mind & body to make you strong, flexible, coordinated and have clarity of mind: all helpful to be a more effective martial arts practitioner. This is the martial aspect that it should sell itself on. But as a fighting system itself? No. There's no evidence whatsoever that it works in a real fight. 99.9% of combat Tai Chi videos are just people showing how it would work in theory - slowly, gently, with a cooperative partner - employing techniques that only work when there's no hard & fast resistance. In the other 0.1%, where Tai Chi practitioners have actually tried to engage in a real sparring match, they end up getting destroyed in seconds. Never trust a "fighting system" that can never show it working in real combat. IMO, however, there's so much more to gain from Tai Chi and Qigong to improve your life, once you grow beyond juvenile fantasies of being some ultimate ninja bad-ass.
Thank you for taking the time to comment Fylgija.I absolutely defer to your knowledge of Tai Chi as have very little experience of it. I used to practice Kung Fu and of course am familiar with its martial applications but I personally find Qigong can be adapted so well in a way that it's accessible to everyone. That's why I love it so much. :-)
