I use an empty hollow straight pen tube to compress the deer hair, small hole on the tip end, larger hole on the opposite end! Can double as a half hitch tool too!

This is my fave topwater fly for salmon and brook trout. Thanks to Paul White for sharing this wicked pattern!

To clarify ….”barbless hooks only” ….You can use barbed hooks here but not in “ Scheduled Atlantic Salmon waters such as the Gander River where he is fishing etc.

That’s a full spectrum meal! Great tie as always.

I tie bugs like this too, with long webby hackles. But I bob the hackles top and bottom so I can grease the bejeebers out of the deerhair without matting down hte hackle fibres. I also make a bobbed tail out of deer or elk so it'll hold a big gob of grease to keep the fly horizontal (I don't grease the front 'locator'). Another kooky mod I sometimes do is tie the stem of a ridiculously-oversized webby hackle in at the tail then counter-wrap it forward before winding the thread through. Makes for a great conversation piece on the river. When other fishermen ask what I'm using, I say a 'spey bomber' and they usually give me plenty of casting room. :)

I like the hair tool you made. Very neat. Thanks for the tip.
I dont do much deer hair tying, just bits of bucktail for crappie jigs, but I am fascinated by it. I'll have to give it a go soo.

No Bomber Tyler I know of adds the calf tail AFTER the deer…. ESP with GSP the hair will spin fine on a thread body. Mad respect to Tim F. of course but This is a very strange way to tie this pattern

What a fly! 😂 Hey if it catches fish, I’ll use it. Didn’t realize you could wrap thread and hackle through stacked deer hair like that. Going to try some variations for Texas bass. Thanks a lot for the great instructions! 👍👍👌

Let us know how this fly works on Texas bass. Key is to tie it BIG with long orange hackle. Smallmouth hammered it so can't see why Largemouth wouldn't either!

Great fly tying there! Have only just seen your channel for the first time and subbed straight away!

Great job Tim hard to make a fly look messy on purpose!! Another difficult ne is the Carter's Bug ...I could never imitate Bryant's mastery of the "messiness"

I use to tie something similar to this fly, with long hackle but loose deer hair, which Salmon won't spit out. Bryant Freeman's way of tying the great Carter's Bug.

Exactly! Carter's bug is deadly as well

Wow. That is a interesting top water fly. I would like to tie that on , a size #10 or if possible a #12 😮. Something different for trout on the lk I fish.

Still get a chuckle at Tim cringing at thought of cutting the tail off.

No brook trout here and only one reservoir with Chinook.
But, I’m going to tie some of these for bass.
    Nice tie.
