If you want to run larger tires than stock it will gear it higher. 5th gear was so high for me I could almost never use it on the highway. 4.10 gears corrected the gear ratio due to having larger tires and I was able to use 5th on the highway and be running at higher rpms.
Do you still have this truck? What size wheels did you have before? I want limited slip but I just bought new wheels and tires so I don't want to have to buy more and have two separate wheel sizes. I also suspect the extra float would cause a lot of oversteer. How fast are you going in fifth Gear at 2000 rpm? Good job on the truck, man 👍🙂
I no longer have the truck as I sold it a few years ago. For the longest time I had 235/75/R15 tires on it and it was a dog, could not even use fifth gear. I replaced the tires with 215/60/R15 and noticed a huge difference in gearing so that's what made me realize I was way overgeared for the bigger tires. It's hard to remember but I would estimate I was around 50 or so with the 235/75/R15 tires and 4.10 gears. Best of luck to you with your truck!
Considerable difference in how it drove, way more torque and you could actually use all 5 gears and not have to down shift into 4th every slight incline.
I have a 2000 ford ranger 4x4 offroad with the 8.8 28 spline axle that's an Open carrier, I was wanting to swap axles out of a 2009 fx4 level 2 31 spline limited slip diff., is it possible
I can add a couple thing's. One thing I'm confused about. If your Ranger is a 4x4, it should not have an open rear axle. Either it's not the stock unit or your clutches inside the axle are fried. It is possible to swap. Biggest thing being the gear ratio MUST be the same as the front. What is the axle code on the tag bolted to the cover? It is also on the inside sticker on driver's side door.
+bmxhector Do it! It did wonders for my truck. I got the rear end out of a 99 ranger 4x4 with a 4.0l at the junkyard. I searched for months trying to find a 4.10 8.8 with limited slip and finally found one! My buddy and I pulled it off the donor truck and swapped it into my 94 the same day. Advice I would give you for the swap is to flush the fluid and get some good high temp RTV silicone for putting the cover back on. Autozone sells specific differential RTV for like $7. Also expect to replace the brake lines on the axle and the rear drum brakes depending on the condition of the rear end. Lemme know if you have any more questions and good luck!
@@badkins510 can I find a 2wd read end 8.8 and be easier to install? Maybe it will be smoother then the one I got... shouldn’t be hard to install seems straight and to the point
Hey so I'm fixing to do this rear end swap on my 1999 Mazda b2500. I just wanted to be sure, you just pulled this lsd rear end out of a 99 ranger 4wd 4.0 and it just bolted right in? no shimming or anything crazy? also hows the 8.8 gearing at highway speeds? like 70 plus? I live in an area where speed limits are very high and I just wanna be sure it's gonna be OK at those speeds. Thanks for the video!
+Dylan Wilson Literally bolted right up with no modifications whatsoever! It was hard to find a 4.10 limited slip at the junkyard but I got this rear end out of a 99 4x4 ranger. The 4.10 gears on the highway are great for my 2.3l 4 cylinder. I'm taching about 3,000 rpm going 75ish.
awesome.almost direct swap for you then? heard of doing the rear axel of a explore and make sure it's lsd.heres a question do all 4x4 Rangers have limited slip?cuz there are plenty of 4x4 to choose from and I plan on going tomorrow
+bmxhector Yeah it was a direct swap for me. You could get an explorer rear end with disc brakes but I think you would have to modify the shock mounts and do some fabrication. Not very many older rangers have limited slip which is what was mostly in the junkyards I looked at. A really easy way to tell is just look at the door sticker and it will give you a code like 84, 86, 87 etc. you can look up the chart online
The explorer rear end will require different shackles or something like that because it drops it 4 inches. I'm thinking about doing a swap from the 7.5 to the 8.8LS in my 94 single cab. Not sure if you found the air silencer in the air intake, right before the throttle body but removing that will give you a wider rpm range throughout the gears. Not to mention you can use fifth gear for something other than going downhill. Lol. How's the new rear diff working out for you with the 4.10 gear's? I imagine you have been using 5th gear already
Thanks for the tips. I just pulled mine from a 03 Edge from the junk yard today and I'm about to I install it soon. I'm looking forward to the additional traction.
Love seein' dudes stay on top of their rigs. Great job Badkins!
Thanks! Gotta take care of your stuff and make it better whenever possible!
if you're still alive I need the ling to that rear end rebuild kit lol
Summit Racing part number FMS-M-4700-B. Ford Performance Parts 8.8 in. Traction-Lok Rebuild Kits M-4700-B
did u use the same leaf springs and struts
What will interchange with a 94 Ford Ranger 4.0 transmission and it is not a electronic transmission
what rims size are you running?
Cragar D window 15X8 rims.
why would any one put a 4.10 behind a 2.3 you know them motor it only has 102 HP good luck with your Gas milage don't throw away the 7.7 rear end

Let me know if you figure anything out lol. I have an 89 that I’m thinking about swapping to an 8.8 limited slip, I run 31 10.50s 15 inch wheels.

Definitely recommend the 8.8 rear end and 4.10 gears for your tire wheel combo if you have the 2.3L!
You called it a fuel filter neck. It is a fuel filler neck
Does the truck drive different now? Due to the 410 gear?
Considerable difference in how it drove, way more torque and you could actually use all 5 gears and not have to down shift into 4th every slight incline.
Nice!

I'm not very knowledgeable on the internals of the rear end, might be a good idea to ask around on some forums and do some research online

What model rear end is this? H9? R5?
It is an R7
I'm wanting to swap a Ford Ranger 8.8 28 spline with the fx4 level 2 31 spline axle
Without getting too specific where in northeast Ohio are you from.
I live in north east Ohio and my rangers frame has rusted through. Yay! 😢
hey im thinking of doing that to y ranger tommorw do you have any advice on how to do the swap and what donor car did u get the real axel

What truck did you pull out the 8.8 axle of?
I'm doing the same thing to my 97 but I'm derusting the frame now before I go get a 8.8 for it, how do you tell if it's a 4:10 ?
Check the door label. This rear end designator is R7.

or just the gearing in general. I'm not to familiar with gear ratios.

Did it make the rear end wider? I have a 96 im trying to do this to
Same here. I am about to do this tonight, just got the rear out of an Explorer. Any tips you can share would be greatly appreciated!
No it does not make the rear end any wider if you get a Ranger rear end.
Not familiar with the Explorer rear ends. The one I got was out of a 4.0l Ranger with the tow package.
Thanks for the tips. I just pulled mine from a 03 Edge from the junk yard today and I'm about to I install it soon. I'm looking forward to the additional traction.
+Rudderify For sure! Best modification I've made to my truck so far!
+badkins510 just finished the swap and it was pretty straight forward. Now I just need to get the speedo gear to correct the speedometer.
+Rudderify Right on! Yeah i haven't corrected my speedometer yet
