You could also kern in illustrator by placing the mouse cursor between the letter forms while the the type is live, hold alt/option and use the left and right arrow keys to reduce the space between. This a way to kern without without outlining the type.
I started the painful process of self creating my own logo two months ago (cuz I'm a control freak) and your videos are the ones that helped me the most, not only with graphic design concept but with Illustrator, one of the hardest programs I've ever had to learn. Keep up the great work =)
Another way you can kern is having the text and instead of converting to curves, be "writing" ready on it and press Alt+Arrowkeys. You could be mode detailed with having the text as shapes, but this method could be a faster way of exploring so you can then detail if needed. Great content as always.
1:20 there's an option to just decrease/increase kerning in the text box. Have your cursor be in the text box bnetween the characters you want to kern, then adjust the value
You mean like rectangles? Yeah that is one way to do it, although I have found using the same size rectangle for each letter doesn't often work out the best, I personally just use my gut instinct and my eyes lol
If you want to keep the text as text instead of converting to outlines and ungrouping the individual letters, you can use the kerning field in the Character dialog; place the cursor between two letters, then adjust the value in the dialog. Negative values move the letters closer together; positive values farther apart. The units seem to be on a subatomic scale, and you may have to enter numbers that are larger in magnitude then you'd expect... usually ±20 is perceptible. You can also select "Optical" here, which isn't perfect but usually tightens things up reasonably well and is much better and more visually appealing than the default settings. Usually, it pays to select all the text and apply optical kerning before tending to the individual letters, in many cases it is a real timesaver.
@@SatoriGraphics Oh thanks, I meant to add how much I've enjoyed this video series. I've only just started watching, but they're on my favorites Thanks for sharing the knowhow with us. It's a great resource! 🤟😊♥️
Split group kerning tip is really helpful :) PS. Recently learned that there should not be WIDE KERNING between LOWER CASE letters. It's hard to read that way (obviously). :p
Yeah splitting words up like that can help a lot actually. And it is obvious if you have a huge tacking or kerning on lowercase lettering, it would be difficult to read... obviously 😛
Nice video, thanks. I was hoping for more info on the kerning best practices, to deal with small print/web vs large print/web - are there any good tips or rules regarding this?
Hello sir i hope you are fine!! i am face problem about spacebar shortkey in illustrator and photoshop 2020. spacebar did not work as hand tool please solve this problem thanks!!
You can go into the tool bar itself, and set any function to any keyboard shortcut you like. If you search on UA-cam or Google on custom toolbar in Illustrator, you will find your answer
That's the idkanymore'th video i watch on the topic (articles aside) and i can't seem to get the hang of it... i'm really starting to think typography isn't for ma aaaghhh
I hope you end up learning a thing or two with this tutorial, and have a great day everyone ✌

I literally started this topic in my school and then you uploaded this video. Are you a mind reader?
Covered kerning on the first graphic design course I attended...
Which i had also been studying for years in my own sketchbook based work..
☮️
it's really important yes, especially if you are going into logo designing, or editorial type work

yes but again you are limited to a fixed nudge of 20 points with the arrow keys. It's still handy from time to time though
1:20 there's an option to just decrease/increase kerning in the text box. Have your cursor be in the text box bnetween the characters you want to kern, then adjust the value
i usually make a small square shape to measure distance between two letters and then i adjust other letters accordingly
You mean like rectangles? Yeah that is one way to do it, although I have found using the same size rectangle for each letter doesn't often work out the best, I personally just use my gut instinct and my eyes lol
@@SatoriGraphics yeah you're right, it doesn't always work

Thanks for the input. Outlining text is a destructive workflow, but when working with logotype it's often fine. Thanks for the advice

Yes it is very useful thank you for making this tutorial 😄😀
My hero
👍👍👍 thanks:)
good spacial awareness
Well u dont have to create outlines to do kerning. All u have to do is click between letters and use alt+arrows to do it :)
thank you
no problemo :)
i wait your tutorial💛✌..
u are great👌
hey thanks, here is a heart for the first comment
Nice ! ...Now please make video on Monogram logo or interwowen logo

What font did you use? Please and thank you :)
So applying tracking +30px to a word is the same as applying kerning +30px to each letter pair in that word, right?

I am not quite sure, ask the algorithm I would assume. It depends, I made a video last week that has nearly 30k views. It's hit or miss

Why is it called kerning that’s dumb
