Nice break down. I have no real design background but I often see people using heavy tracking and it looks horrific, but then also some beautiful examples. Couldn't quite work out why one looked awful and others, so spot on.
Nice, very much enjoyed that one! (Kind of sad how you tend to enjoy most what you already now or agree with :/) Anyway, two details got me wondering. At about 6:15 you have your Shampoo example set in very bold, and the A (almost?) touches the M at the bottom. How do you feel about that sort of accidental ligature? Avoid, or live with it for the sake of improved whitespace?
Thank you, Nadine 🤩 Brilliant question, and you are the first, who asked. My aim was to optically center “My Type” below “PIMP” because the P makes a bow. I had it wider initially, but it looked off, so I left some space on the right. In the end the eye counts. See an image here: twitter.com/glyphe/status/1384843299186413575?s=20
... and then about the SUBSCRIBE-button-from-hell. What you talk about it your Shampoo-Example isn’t actually that relevant here. The letterforms fit more smugly to each other and don't create gaps that are all that nasty (ok, maybe the C is a problem). I agree that it looks better with some tracking, but I wonder why. Unspaced, it becomes more a word and less of a rectangle, so in a way actually quite an even (albeit dark) "color". Or maybe it’s just arbitrary and only due to what we’re used to?
Yeah, I think a looot of it has to do with what we are used to seeing. And you’re right, with Roboto it’s not that problemantic, since it’s pretty squarish and narrow. I made it a bit extreme in my example, but i think over all as you say some tracking is beneficial here, it’s a bit easier to see in the blog post: www.zeichenschatz.net/typography/tracking-and-kering-all-caps-text#subscribe-button

Awesome to hear that, Phillip! 🤩
that awkward gesture again! Haha love your videos they are so informative and entertaining
Thank you, Alexandra 🙌
See you one the next one!😀
Yay! And which was the next one? 😉
Das Thumbnail 😂 Genau so habe ich es mir vorgestellt, als du mir davon im Podcast erzählt hast!
Hahaha! Der Schock sitzt tief

Thanks for your thoughts, Klaus! 😄 I’d go for the first one, since I think in this case the letters still should stand alone.
What's spaced worse than SUBSCRIBE button on youtube?
SUBSCRIBED button.
LOL! Glad you see that terribly spaced button 😂
B O O BS
Translate that for me, George 😅
Wonderful ❤️
🙌 Thank you, Christoph! 🤩
8:41 - I had to wipe my screen clean. 💦
😅😅
Afraid to sound stupid and maybe someone asked already but, why do you have more space after "my type" at the beginning? Awesome video as always btw 👍
