The dunks were spectacular in this, the best all time hands down, but this event also really showed us how utterly terribly the scoring system for the dunk contest is.
Yup, perfect score of 50 doesn’t telll us which dunk is better if they just keep going off for 50 caliber: it’s a stalemate. Should have just come down to a pick a guy after each dunk
Still better than when Dr J was a judge.
Give each judge one 11 card per round. That will make things interesting. And with 5 judges (an odd number), it will lead to epic scores and will break ties lie this
The scoring system is fine, the problem is that the judges can be biased. A lot of judges are retired players that used to be known for their dunks and they can be overly critical. Dr. J has been mentioned a few times bc he was notorious for it. The worst is when you have judges like Dwyane Wade that will give low scores bc they want a specific player to win.
@@dizzykincade7831 The far easier solution in my view is to have each judge rank the dunkers 1-5. No scores at all.

Poor Aaron Gordon. He got robbed twice and then retired from the dunk contest. A shame he never won one. After all he is the best dunk contest dunker of his generation.
A good consolation is that everyone remembers him being the rightful winner that was robbed. But how many people really remember the dunk contest winners after this. The next year, Glenn robinson III won the dunk contest, but can't even remember any of his dunks.

Aaron Gordon won that hands down biggest robbery in nba history. Numerous people have dunked from the free throw line, ive never seen anyone replicate the air chair gordon did, he was way more creative too
It’s prolly the most controversial dunk contest ever…online/Twitter went crazy that Gordon got robbed(I agree) but big up both for putting on the show cuz the contest had been in a stale for a few years prior

But amazing dunks but the airchair is insane also they are supposed to reward points based off creativity/flair like you said so Gordon should’ve won it using props and what not.

The “Air Chair” is the best dunk of all-time, contest or otherwise and his triple-clutch reverse is so underrated. The airtime it takes to have time to go completely behind your head, then down to your knees, then back behind your head on a reverse is inhuman.
Yeah but the thing is about that reverse dunk, I know what you are saying because when I was watching it live on my pc I said this should be a 50. But I think for the judges it wasn't flashy or complicated. Also they were a biased af towards levine.

Yeah the overtime rule is dumb, if they’re tied after the contest, have the judges vote for whoever had the best overall showing. Gordon had it in a landslide

Kennies commentary on these dunks is very underrated. He adds so much to it.
Still can’t believe i got to see this LIVE..DEFINITELY felt like it was the greatest all star Saturday as a whole. Likely the BEST dunk contest dunk EVER by Aaron Gordon as well with the piked legs sitting while jumping over the dragon..so.crazy

Not sure if you remember but Aaron Gordon (the guy who lost) plays with Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray on the nuggets and was a big help in winning the championship last season. Zach Lavine is still ringless... so Gordon got the last laugh.
Vince Carter at the 2000 slam dunk contest. He's my favorite dunker of all time. Jason Richardson at the 2003 dunk contest is incredible too. The scoring system made more sense then too lmao
To clear up the 3pt Contest confusion you had Nick....Kenny Smith (the guy that has the catchphrase: "It's Over" & "Let's Go Home") had stated earlier that night that the All-Star Festivities (which always ended in with the Slam Dunk Contest) should now have the 3pt Shooting Competition as the Saturday Night Finale because it was really popular at that point but more importantly, the Dunk Contest started to really lack in popularity for the last couple of years leading up to 2016.....Then Gordon vs Lavine happened and the Dunk Contest was back!!!!

If the judges could go back, the award would go to Gordon. It’s so obvious. Zach had some crazy dunks as well but I ain’t ever seen anyone get that type of air that Gordon had. Notice how neither is missing ducks.

This dunk contest made me fall in love with the magic mascot, went to Shaqs jersey retirement in Orlando and got a plush of the mascot 😂

Lavine was great but Gordon was unbelievable I couldn’t believe my eyes when he jumped over the mascot that was the most insane dunk I’ve ever seen

First dunk by AG, behind the head he kept pointing at was a tribute trademark to "The Mailman" Karl Malone.
If I remember correctly since this happened in 2016 along with the Olympics around this time, Aaron Gordon’s dunk would’ve placed him at bronze in the high jump contest at that year’s games
Lavine had the distance with his dunks which I think gave him the edge despite them both having all time performances

Yeah the scoring is really flawed in this event. Aaron didnt want to go to extra dunks, rightfully imo. His dunks in the beginning were just better. However once they did go to extra dunks, zach just had a wider variety or dunks he could do, and imo deserved the win at that point, after Aaron deserved it earlier.

What's amazing about this is most of them rarely missed their dunks, usually most contests. Dunkers make the show ;less exciting by missing dunks and the surprise is gone from seeing it on the first attempt

It’s controversial because Gordon had the best dunk (of all time too) but Lavine dunks were just overall better. People really are forgetting that just dunking from (or on) from the ft line before was an auto 50 and Lavine did a WINDMILL and BETWEEN THE LEGS ft line dunks. I think it was a fair win for Lavine even tho Gordon had the 2 best dunks, Lavine had the 3 next best dunks. Still the best dunk contest of all time.

Y’all should watch the 2022 dunk contest see a comparison. A lot of people think the 2022 dunk contest was the worst of all time.
That Zach Lavine dunk was the same, but way harder to bounce & catch it than to just grab it & dunk.
While I’m in the minority and think Zach Lavine earned the win, I think they should’ve brought two trophies out cause they both put on a hell of a show and both deserved to bring home a trophy

They need to expand the scoring system. The problem is they are (rightfully) comparing modern dunks to dunks of the past. If Jordan got a 50 for jumping from the free throw line, Lavine has to get a 50 for doing a windmill from the FT line. Even tho I agree Aaron's second dunk was way better, they can't all the sudden give Lavine less bc it wouldn't make sense historically. Their needs to be categories and not just a blanket score imo but im also not going to act like I have the answers. I'll leave you with this: don't discount Jason Richardson's dunk contests, he did some very original stuff and revitalized the dunk contest for a moment (or maybe set the bar too high for a year and hurt the contest)

Held up on a rotating mascot lol, it's no harder to get a lob to bounce in the exact place u want it. Plus Gordon's was better execution too, he threw his hand behind his head while doing it which adds a different level
the camera doesn't do the free throw dunks justice. For reference the free throw line is about 13 feet from the hoop. Nobody ever tried any type of windmill or between the legs from there before LaVine did it then. Really incredible stuff.

My biggest pet peeve with Dunk contest is they give out 50s way too easily. So clearly inferior dunks get same scores as insane dunks.
Also if you mess it up you get to keep trying until to finally complete one. Another flaw in the contest. So you have some awkward ones where a guy will need a bunch of tries and its not nearly as impressive but will still get really high scores.
At its best like this contest and the most recent one the dunk contest is pretty cool. Unfortunately there are a decent amount of meh dunk contests. A small white guy with only a few NBA games won it this year which many say was best contest since this one. He was included because he was such a good dunker despite only having a few NBA games.
His name is Mac McClung and is definitely worth a watch. Small white guy who just is bizarrely good at dunking.

at the end of the day, they judge each dunk in a vacuum. thats how they're supposed to score it. If you compare each dunk to another, then it takes away from the insanity of each dunk. All the dunks should get no score under a 50 and it shows. Whether or not you believe that Gordon's dunks deserve more than 50 is another conversation entirely. Like Gordon's second dunk is the greatest dunk of all time in my opinion. but when scoring dunks in a vacuum, a 50 is a 50.
For me this two best dunker contest is a draw the two winner because this is absolutely insane...
During the second attempt, his height was measured, which would have been enough for third place at the World Championships in Athletics that year and they have already robbed twice. Mr. 50 is only one.

Gordons first dunk was a 50. Lavines first dunk was the exact same style of dunk as gordons without the mascot and the hand behind the head. That shouldve docked some points off Lavines dunk imo. Still a great dunk contest overall though.
To be honest and tonba fair, LaVine should not be given 50 pts for that first one. Because Gordon did the same dunk with a spinning mascot, jumped higher, more force behind it and a hand behind his head 😳

Aaron Gordon, who should be a 2x dunk champion. This was the 1st of the 2 robberies.
The issue is the level of difficulty of Zach Lavine's last two dunks were better and harder to do than Gordon's. They were all 50's in my opinion and the bad part was that Gordon didn't have more dunks lined up and waiting while Lavine dunks effortlessly. Power dunker vs Finesse. Gordon has vertical but no distance. Lavine has vert and distance. To me the judges were forced to give a lower score to end it because they can't go forever. Whoever's last dunk was better was going to win no matter who's overall performance was better than the other. This wasn't a robbery, but it definitely was close. The next one he did he was just robbed by a biased "judge" lol
Also when they do these dunk contest they need to start getting better judges like judges that have actually won dunk contest the only people that should be on the panel should be people that have incredible dunking skills or a past of winning these competitions otherwise we shouldn't be having centers up there and three-point shooters and announcers judging lol that's like someone who judges figure skating and now they're judging boxing lol
