    This is why Jiu Jitsu will never blow up mainstream. Two of the highest level competitors, each from the highest level of schools, and still absolutely no action. I train so I can appreciate what is taking place, but we can’t expect the everyday person to jump on board; when in a 30 minute Jiu-Jitsu match maybe 4 minutes was actual Jiu-Jitsu taking place. Those guys are still studs and would absolutely kill me, just my two cents.

      Tony Z I’m a BJJ practitioner and former basketball player, what you said is false. Basketball is exciting AF because there is constant scoring, dunking, explosive athletic movements, etc. In BJJ the game is much more subtle, and nuanced. To the casual viewer who doesn’t know what they’re watching, it can become a snooze fest when guys are stalling or unable to get their game going offensively.

      Tell me, how many professional football and baseball games have you watched where the shit just goes back and forth for hours and in the end someone only wins by a small amount? I can't even count how many times I've seen games like that, but those sports still draw millions. BJJ is more akin to boxing and boxing draws crowds not just for potential of knockouts but because of gambling. If there were gambling on BJJ, then hey, it'd be way more popular.

    • @isaacbonilla4964

      phoenixamaranth Exactly. Going back and forth. This was just hand fighting for 30 minuets. Unlike you I actually practice Jiu-Jitsu lol I’m telling man. No average Joe would rather watch this if a football game or basketball were on.

      @@isaacbonilla4964 It was high level hand fighting and leg positioning that is beyond average joe to comprehend and appreciate so yeah, it's boring to watch. But as I said, I've seen more boring football and baseball games than I care to count and people still sit through them too. Year after year, dozens of shit football games where it goes one direction for a minute, timeout, now back the other direction for a minute, timeout, back the other direction. Turnover on downs, here we go again the other way....boring as fuck when things are evenly matched.

      @@xpat73 Craig was working for a sub the whole time. Diniz could've done a lot more, his best moment in all of this was his failed cart wheel pass. Craig had several attacks, armbar attempt at the end multiple leg lock and kimura attempts, plus a few guillotine attempts. Diniz played it safe most of the match. In fact Diniz won off of Craigs takedown attempt.
      End of the day Diniz won, he used the ADCC rule set to his advantage, the smart thing to do. However a lot of the match was boring cause of this and Craig would smoke him in a sub only rule set.

    You can learn how to defend very well by watching Mattheus, Though it isn’t exciting. Different stylistically, Matthews being super aggressive on top and Craig Jones being very aggressive off his back, they just nullified each other because they both know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Mattheus can’t solve Craig Jones Guard defense, Craig Jones can’t solve how he will close a sweep or submission. Both were just out of their element.

    can someone explain how the 2 points was awarded. it looked like craig initiated a terrible take down and denise defended then tried to turn craig over. is it because he controlled Craig's head or because craig looked like he switched to pulling guard?

    • @jsl8461
      @jsl8461 2 роки тому +1

      At 25:14, Craig executes an elbow pass and shoots in, but Matheus was able to secure a left-side underhook and hipped in, stopping Craig's forward momentum. Craig is in a compromised position, since he can be turned with a "cement mixer" or put into a front headlock or guillotine, so he tries to back away (I think he probably wanted to return to his feet and clear the underhook). Matheus senses this backwards momentum and drove forward while using his upper body controls to turn Craig to his right (Craig's left), forcing Craig's weight over the rear corner and onto his butt.
      This was scored as a takedown in Matheus' favor. If Craig had just pulled guard, he would have picked up 1 penalty point.

    People bitch when a match doesn't end inside of 10 minutes with a spectacular submission, but with guys this good, there's a reason why that doesn't happen more often than not. The fact is, this is the finals of ADCC, and there's a lot of money on the line, so for both guys, there's absolutely no margin for error. Craig is a world-class guard player, and Matheus is a world-class passer. Throw those two in together with those stakes, and it's not gonna be a balls-to-the-wall barnburner. It'll be a very tightly-contested match like this where both guys are looking to make no mistakes. Me personally, I enjoy seeing that, especially because it's a testament to how good both of them are.

    I don't get this ruleset. Why penalize for pulling guard? Sure, it can make for some unexciting fights, but penalizing for pulling guard can turn a match into this: 2 guys just trying to eke out a point and having 0 initiative while standing. Thats also pretty bad but it penalizes athletes with a strong guard game.

    • @jsl8461
      @jsl8461 2 роки тому

      The first portion of ADCC matches (10 minutes in the case of finals) are submission only, so they don't have any penalties for guard pulling. Also, you can still get to guard without penalty in the points portion, but it needs to be done in certain ways (ie, off of a submission attempt like a guillotine, or by shooting in and staying on your knees for 3 seconds before going to guard).
      ADCC rules are not perfect, but the original idea was to create a rule set that allows submission specialists, positional specialists, and takedown specialists to compete against each other.
      The first portion is no points and no penalty for guard pull, so that's designed for submission specialists (it is also the part of the match where submissions are most likely to happen since it is dry and not slippery yet). The later portions all use a points system, and it's sweaty too so submissions are a lot less likely to occur anyways. Points for sweeps and passes and mount and back takes are for positional specialists (like people from an IBJJF background). The takedown points and guard pull penalty rewards people who are good at takedowns.

      Keep in mind, this is no-gi, so you don't have a collar grip to secure your posting arm. Posting on the neck is the next best thing. In theory the bottom guy can throw up an armbar to counter someone posting on their throat, although in practice this is hard to do against a good opponent..

      If Matheus didn't do anything, Craig didn't do anything either. A bunch of not even remotely close submission attempts doesn't get you the win. While Craig was playing his guard game, Matheus was pressuring with pass attempts. Craig shot for a takedown and got stuffed and forced to his back, that's 2 points. Hence, he did not "literally do nothing".

      If you only saw what he did as "casually pushing him while on his knees", then I'm not sure what match you were watching. Diniz made several attempts to pass to the side, and Craig had to defend them. His guard retention is so good that it never let any of them besides the cartwheel pass attempt get very close to succeeding and shut most of them down early.
