Washington, DC to Chicago, IL on Amtrak's Capitol Limited

- Hey UA-camrs! I'd like to invite you on the first part of my journey last summer (2010) where I rode across country on Amtrak!
Here is the first segment in which I rode Amtrak's Capitol Limited all the way from Washington, DC to Chicago, IL. This was my third or fourth time riding Westbound on the Capitol Limited and I figured this time why not film it for everyone to enjoy!
This video was shot right after I first got a video camera so please excuse the sloppiness and shakiness. I figured I'd share for the experience and not so much the professionalism!

I just returned from Chicago to DC and back last week. I've taken this trip many time. Thanks for the memories
my only wish was that more of this ride was during the day. The return trip makes up for most of that I do admit. However, going through the steel mill in Pittsburgh at night is incredible!

Great video! I rode the Capitol from WAS to CHI a couple of weeks ago - in coach - and loved every second of it! We made excellent time the whole way and arrived in Chicago about 30 minutes early. Those Superliner coaches are very nice and spacious - way better than the Amfleet II's for long distance and sleeping.

Hi! Sorry it has taken so long to respond. The line to the West is on a multitude of freight carriers, no dedicated passenger line. Speeds vary, slow leaving the terminal, but once on the mainline speeds reach 80-90MPH, the look from the window can be deceiving! DC to Chicago was about 17 hours, Chicago to LA was closer to 40 hours. Lounge car was fairly quiet but overall coach was very quiet too, very easy to relax! We did indeed have a sleeping compartment.

I have ridden in coach many times and I have always had a very pleasant experience. They are very comfortable, spacious, and have a lot of leg room!

Took the Cap in 2011 from DC, running REAL GOOD, almost HOT, left Toledo on schedule, got about 45 miles west of Toledo,stopped, sat, pushed back into Toledo, GOT PUT ON BUSES. NS crash caused this, thought we would lash up with the LSL which is usually an hour or so behind, through Detroit but that didn't happen, from what I understand Cap ran to/from Toledo for a FEW days until NS cleaned things up. Going to try again in 2013.
I would definitely recommend traveling by Amtrak, it was a wonderful experience! It is very safe, all other passengers are quite pleasant in general and are almost always very friendly! There is not much opportunity for trouble either, everyone is there on the moving train together and stops are very brief. Also, the crews are always on the lookout for any suspicious activity. Very clean, Amtrak likes to keep it that way. Quiet in coaches and sleepers and quite the opposite in social *cntd.
No problem! The conductors make plenty of announcements regarding stops. Usually when pulling into a station they announce what stop it is and when pulling out they announce the next stop. When you take a seat they place a seat check (paper slip) above your seat to mark its occupied. Before each stop they go through each car and pull off the slips of riders detraining at the next stop. If they see you asleep and youre ticketed to get off at the next stop they will wake you up at that time.
Correct! Rode the old Cap a few times between Willard, Ohio with my father who was a brakeman then. As well as a time or two to Washington.

I believe this train may have been a B&O (Baltimore and Ohio) train 50 years ago. The B&O arrived at a Chicago station called "Grand Central" located at Harrison and Wells St. It was demolished in the 60s I think. The 20th Century and NYC trains arrived at LaSalle St station--it to is now gone. Of course, the original Union Station train shed is now a high rise building. The original waiting room building survives today.
The video was very, very informative we will traveling soon on this very same train to Chicago and you vid helped immensely by showing us what to expect. I wonder is it possible to train it all the way to California? Mega Bus does not do that I'm sure? The bus would wear the body totally out I'm sure. The train is better, and the airlines are getting ridculous with the searches, and ground rules and the tight squeeze sitting (3) across.
*cntd. areas such as the lounge and cafe cars. Dining cars are very relaxed and the food is very nice. Food is at a charge if you are coach, complementary with sleeper. Drinks with meals same deal as I just mentioned. Snacks and drinks in addition can be purchased in the lounge/cafe at an additional charge regardless of accommodations.

Its interesting that you didn't have the usual Dash-8 banking engine coupled behind the P42s. They often use one or even, as on my run aboard the Capital, two of those to help the lighter P42s over the Alleghenies.
I took the NE Regional out of Hartford to DC. Smooth ride enjoyed it a lot. The only problem though was that two people sitting right behind us were yapping the entire time. I tried to doze off a little bit but they wouldn't shut up. That's a problem with traveling in coach sometimes

If you miss your stop that can be a problem, its usually your responsibility even though they remind you to help. If there is another train going the opposite direction they will put you on that. If there is not then you will probably have to take a cab back to the last stop.

That sounds about right to me! I know the routing has changed over the years because I believe for one instance we were on NS West of Pittsburgh which would have taken us off the B&O.

What they do is certain stops along the line (at acceptable time intervals) that allow smokers and any other passengers who want fresh air to step off and do whatever they like to do. I think I did two of the stops in this video, one at Cumberland, MD and one at Toledo, OH. They used to have smoking sections of cars but space is at a premium and the trains usually sell out so why cut out seats for potential travelers who do not wish to smoke? Amtrak accommodates it adequately in my opinion...

I rode coach on the Capitol Limited from Alliance to Chicago. It was the first time since 1998 that I've been on Amtrak. Funny enough, that trip was from Alliance to D.C

Sorry to hear about that for you. I remember on a trip to Chicago that year a section of tracks not far inside IN that were really bumpy going full speed where I thought the cars might jump the tracks. I've been on both the LSL and the Cap to Chicago. The Cap is a much better train. I hope your next time is much better.

You are correct. West of Pittsburgh you are on NS tracks. The last time the route was changed was in 1990. The Capitol Limited was rerouted north at Alliance, OH to Cleveland, OH to join the Chicago line (immediately east of the station platform in Cleveland) and follow the rest of the same route as the Lakeshore Limited. The change happened because Conrail at the time abandoned a section of the former PFW&C in northwestern Indiana. What remains of that track in Ohio is single-track now.

Question: How long was the trip from DC to Chicago? I'm planning to go there in October and I'm researching my options. I was thinking of trip starting the trip from DC at night.
13 hours if nothing happens, enjoy the ride and do it all from he sightseer car, its sooo cool! my kids slept in it cause they loved being in that car
Back in August I went out to Baltimore with a friend. It was 14 hours going out and 18 hours coming back, not including the 7 hours that we spent on a bus from DC to Pittsburgh when there was a derailment of a cargo train.

Not a dumb question at all! A deadhead is when they need to move an extra car between points and they tack it onto the back of a train. It is out of service and not accessible to passengers.

Why didn't you film Pittsburgh?
Not the Capitol Limited, no. It leaves DC and goes North. Trains that make stops in NC are the Piedmont, Carolinian, Crescent, Silver Star, Silver Meteor, and the Palmetto. A train that passes through NC but doesn't stop, is the Auto Train.
How did you get to the baggage

LOL!! The guy announced South Bend India, I live nearby and sorry no cows roaming the streets but the homeless wash their clothes in the river. The Amtrak station is in the worst part of town, have your side arm loaded and ready if you have to detrain in South Bend, especially after dark and if you left your car in the parking lot good luck finding it still there.

I have rode the capital Limited from Washington DC to Chicago Illinois it was a very unpleasant ride the conductors were rude the restrooms was unsanitary and the food on the train was expensive

Problem with the Capitol Ltd is that it does not have Business Class....it's either coach or sleeper. NOT GOOD!!
Great video, but I thought shooting videos from the open door of the baggage car, or just entering the baggage car, was prohibited.

Just a comment on the camera handling. Not criticism. Instead of walking along with the camera bouncing around, just stand at one end of the car and take a shot for several seconds so it will be steady. Also, don't swing the camera around rapidly, it's hard to follow on the playback. I enjoyed the video anyway, however.
The bad camera work made this too hard to watch. Motion sickness began to set in...
