This video is BREATHTAKING. I love it. We all live in a Beautiful country.
Keith Klingensmith Thank you Keith.... Check out part one The Capitol Limited Segment... 4k Amtrak Capitol Limited Train #29 April 29, 2014 Part 1 Coast to Coast
Keith Klingensmith Uneditied complete coast to coast version to be posted soon....
It's videos like this that inspired my switch to train travel with my wife. We love it and we are hooked. Thank you sir.
I
We were late pulling into Spokane, too, in 2012. That blissful morning, walking on that long, long platform, stretching the legs and embracing the sunlight. You bring it all back to me. Thanks.
A few years i took a winter (mid January) wrap-around ride via the California Zephyr from Chicago to Sacramento, then took the Coast Starlight to Everett Washington, then the empire builder from Everett to Chicago... wonderful trip. your video made me homesick for the rails once again. Loved the jazz and the rail chatter. Thanks so much.
I'm watching this wonderful video again with a new HP ENVY 750 and a VIZIO 1080p 32inch TV/Monitor. Your videos are outstanding. And I really appreciate your posting them on UA-cam.Many thanks.
I think that one big differences between last year and now is that I now have a digital monitor with a HDMI connected to my new computer vs. my old analog monitor connected with the old DVI analog connection. That 32 inch 1080p monitor is something else! It's big. It's beautiful! It's how a computer monitor should be! Once you see it, you'll never go back to an old analog monitor.
You should see the 4k Vids on a Samsung 55 inch Curved 3D TV !
I would have really appreciate if you would have announced the stations as went through them, although I did enjoy and appreciate the work that went into making this video, thank you very much. I wish I could have been the one shooting the video. Without people like you people like me would never see the country, once again thank you and God bless you.
The afternoon and evening from 31 minutes until 35, 36... very lovely. I guess you would not be surprised if I told you landscapes are among my favorite types of paintings.
Thanks Rod for the Empire Builder video. It was really a treat. I have travelled the Capital Ltd, the Lake Shore Ltd, and the Cardinal a couple of times each. But the Empire Builder is going to be my first westerly train in the spring of 2016. Thanks for letting me see the fun I am going to have. I am going to watch all your train videos..maybe one day we'll meet up in the dinning car of one of the trains we are both on....Rod Brown
+Rodney Brown Glad you liked Rod... Hope you enjoy the rest of my train videos... check out my cruise videos also... Love to take them ...and post them to you tube... My only complaint about the trip is that it was too short... As a Lover of train travel I have to laugh about of the comments about the train being late.... The later the better--means I get a longer time to enjoy the ride....
+Rod, post the link to your cruise videos...I've been out several times with Carnival and Royal Caribbean.

Do the Zephyr !
Wow. I watched your Capitol Limited trip and now the Empire Builder trip. I felt like I was on the train taking the trip with you. Thanks for sharing these vids.
Beautiful. Thanks for this amazing posts. Train rides are so much fun. I used to ride them with my grandmother when I was a child and they are still fun today. Good memories! :)

Rod
I will thank you so much Rod!
You are very welcome.....
Very cool ride! After I got lung cancer I can't travel much any more so I finally did it from coast to coast here...thanks for posting...you put a lot into it...and cool camera!
Camera is truly amazing... 4k is the format of the future... Glad I cound be of assistance....
Going through the Cascades is fabulous!
really loved that trip took it in 2012. My first experience time in the USA.and a great way to get to know the country and the people aboard the train. Travelled from Chicago to Portland to friends I met in my home country (Netherlands). Thanks for the video, great memories!
I remember riding the empire from Chicago to Seattle back in 05 and 06 hope to do it again. Very enjoyable 😊
Rod you can get the Cardinal in Philadelphia, it runs tri weekly
Between New York & Chicago. I rode on the Cardinal October 3/4,
2012 from WIlmington, DE after spending two weeks with my
Youngest brother who lives in Stanton, DE. I then rode the Texas
Eagle to Dallas October4/5, 2012. I stayed the Discovery Day
Weekend with my youngest son who lives just outside of Dallas
in Carrollton, TX. I enjoy your videos, and train travel. It's the
best way to see the country.
Thanks. I live in Colorado and in the past couple of years I've begun riding the California Zephyr fairly often. There's nothing like trains. It's a lifestyle, an addiction, a joy, a pleasure, fascinating, a history lesson, a way to meet people, a destination itself. Can that be said about buses and planes? Oh yeah, i forgot to mention. It's also a way to travel. Did I miss anything? :)
I took the Empire Builder from Chicago to Spokane about twenty years ago and really enjoyed it Rod. Thank you for showing me the rest of the trip to Seattle. Wenatchee was beautiful. Nice video quality! Thanks!
Glad you liked ... Will be posting a giant combined Capitol Limited / Empire Builder video of all of the shots/clips I took on the trip soon.. Will take a week to render 4k in FCP X
Thanks for helping me relive my trip last year!!
Beautiful Video Rod! Best I've seen regarding Rail travel! I felt as if I was riding along! Thank You for sharing!
+Teresa y Thank you Teresa..
Best Amtrak video ever. (Part 1 and 2) I love riding the Train and this trip is one I have been looking at booking. Now I know it will be my next big trip after watching your fantastic job of capturing so much. Thanks for sharing
Your welcome
OMG and then it was morning!!! Surprise! Mmm I like being caught. Funny how sunset and dawn are so similar. I was wondering hey wait... isn't that light coming from the east!!! Hahaahahahah oh yeah. Good one.
Awesome video, the Empire Builder was the very first train I had ever been on, I have been hooked ever since. I took it from Seattle to Milwaukee.
Rod, Thank You for videoing you'r voyage.. I too love using Amtrak to get away, and I love trains also, again Thank You and the music, awesome loved it!!
Glad you liked.... Check out the Smooth Jazz coast to coast version....
I will Rod, Thank You again!
Awesome video! So relaxing to watch! Thank you!
nice video. for some one like me who has never been on Amtrak it gives you an ideal
what it's like to travel cross country on a train.
Great trip report. I watched both parts and enjoyed them thoroughly. Wonderful videography. Thanks.
Thanks for your kind comments... Was still getting used to the new camera--
Stephen Greene guys plz watch my videos also. I am from India and I do rail fanning.
Enjoyable. Brings back many memories of train travel, even though I have only ridden the western parts of the empire (from Whitefish to Seattle/Portland). The prairie parts remind me of a trip across Canada, Manitoba Alberta etc.
As for technique: editing, camera work, and your choice to hold your tongue and not talk talk talk talk talk: I find it all fascinating and very instructive. Especially the huge effort to make a longer "film" -- this one is over 90 minutes!!!! Thank you for your work and thank you for sharing it with us!
This comment was when I was only at 21 minutes in. Having fun watching and experiencing.
The Empire Builder is a great way to travel!
Really enjoyed the ride. Hated to see it end, especially the scenic beauty off Washington. I was also amazed how clean Seattle is. Unfortunately big cities today show their wear and are trashed as you have shown. Thanks for your effort.
you might wish to check out my playlist for the extended coast to coast version (uncut-all the footage I took--with great mountain scenery) in full 4K !
Rod
I have done that and sub'd. Again really well done. Thanks, Ed
Living in Spokane, WA, this train, the Empire Builder is the only one that rolls through town. I travel to Portland, OR quite a bit and Rod, if you get the chance, you must check out that route. The beauty of the Columbia Gorge is unmatched anywhere.
I LOVE the Empire Builder very much! I have ridden on Amtrak long distance trains a number of times and I love it because sleeping on the train is fun, plus the beautiful scenery!
One time, I actually observed a live birth take place on the train, I’m not joking. Back in late March 2019, I was riding the California Zephyr from Davis to Glenwood Springs and on the train, there was pregnant 19 year old girl from SFSU traveling from Emeryville to Denver with her boyfriend. They normally fly home from college for holidays/breaks but because their due date was close (due date was April 5th and they departed on March 29th), they had to use the train since airlines do not allow women to fly in the last 6 weeks of pregnancy. During the ride at 1 AM, the girl’s water broke and the attendant for our sleeping car (Justin Woods, a young guy in his early 20s based in Chicago) volunteered to deliver the baby since he had seen how it was done online before. The girl agreed and Justin did so in which he went into the first aid kit, got his gloves on, then squeezed himself into the roomette to have the girl push while he caught the baby when she was born. The baby ended up being born on the train - a healthy baby girl in a ROOMETTE!!! It was a fabulous story and the girl, her newborn and boyfriend were taken off the train by paramedics at the next railroad crossing. The train was in a remote location between Elko and Salt Lake City at the moment which required a helicopter to meet the train and have her airlifted to the nearest hospital which was more than an hour away (an ambulance can’t drive more than 30 minutes away from it’s base and SLC would take longer than that, so they used a helicopter). As it is, I observed the whole thing as I was holding the girl’s left leg as well as recording this with her boyfriend’s phone. I’ve wondered - if you are female, suppose this happened to you where you (or your wife/girlfriend) suddenly went into labor on an Amtrak train and the train was going across a remote location at the moment. Would you at all be able to tolerate giving birth unmediated, while crammed into a Roomette, on a bed that was not flexible (unlike in the hospital), on a train that speeding up to 90 MPH, the baby’s umbilical cord having to stay attached to you until you got to a hospital (no scissors/clamps on the train), and the person delivering your baby is an Amtrak conductor/attendant with no medical training or license of any kind??? Seriously, this girl was incredibly brave and was lucky that there were no complications, PLUS it only took 20 minutes for her to push the baby out (water broke at 1 AM, and the baby was born at 1:22 AM) What do you think of all this!!!???
I really liked this video. I'm fond of geography and "where people" stay and learned a lot about the environment. Keep it up!!
Dirk Louw Thanks
I know this is a very minor detail... but thank for you showing the railcar numbers when you filmed the walkthrough on the train! Definitely helps with roster notes and such
Nice job.
I´ve watched it all.
Tks for posting.
Thanks Tim
Great video! Thank you for sharing! I forgot about the schedule change in 2014. You were able to see eastern Washington in daylight. Normally Spokane to Wenatchee is in darkness.
Wasnt a schedule change... we were three hours late... Check the extended remarks with the video for the actual times ....
Lucky, you had a heritage unit on your train!
great quality thanks for upload
Great video! Me and my dad hope to go on this one day!
Very enjoyable video.
Great train ride videos!
Glad you liked....
Awesome video!!!!!! Thank you!!!!!
Nice video and beautiful colors.
Cool shots
steven williams II Thanks Steven
I never rode the Empire Builder or Sunset Limited & Lake Shore Limited. I rode the Coast Starlight,Capitol Limited,Southwest Chief,California Zephyr,Pacific Surfliner,Cardinal,Silver Star,Pioneer,Desert Wind,Palmetto,Northeast Corridor. Thanks Ron the hints of traveling by rail. Your Videos are nice
+Michael Siehl
WOW, it seems like you've been all over. Tell me. I'm 52 years old and in fairly good health. I can sit in one seat for very long periods of time (as much as 10 hours straight).
How well do you think I would fare if I bought an 8 segment 15 day "rail pass" and rode from Chicago out to all of the routes west of the Mississippi River that are longer than 100 miles at a stretch?
Would it sound reasonable that I could do that entire section of the country without needing to spend the extra money necessary to buy a sleeper room. Of course I would need to buy some motel rooms in a few cities waiting for the "next days" route to start, but could I be comfortable sleeping in a coach seat?
Do you think it's possible to do all of the routes west of the Mississippi in a 15 day stretch for only $459?
+Michael Siehl
Also, are there electrical plugs in the walls in the coach seat section?
If I do a trip like this I'd want to be able to continuously recharge some rechargeable batteries that I would bring along with me.
+nudist0885 I rode in coach from Seattle to LA on the Coast Starlight and my son played games etc plugged into the wall outlet strip that ran along the wall at our seat.... Rooms and Bedrooms have outlets...
+nudist0885 ua-cam.com/play/PLppLkjmuXArnwvnp1M2nNGcTGpdbP1GED.html
I took it from the WI Dells to Chicago back in November... 5 hour delay.
Pulled into Union Station 11pm at night. Instead of 4pm.
Nice vid; pic quality is especially good. I rode the Empire Builder about 3 yr. ago as part of a 7000 mi trip. Wonderful and will do it again. Always late though---but I was on vacation and had no schedule to keep. As an example, was 7 hrs late arriving in Glacier Nat'l Park. This fall will take another long trip: 6500 miles.
ill be doing thisd in june. boston to seattle. can;t wait
Mike H Enjoy you trip...
Mike H.: Enjoy the scenery, I've heard the food service has declined, but anyone who's eaten N.Y. or Boston fast food can survive on the snack car, or diner meals, as opposed to Peanuts or Pretzels on planes! Nothing beats the scenery close up, even a junkyard may show you a favorite car or truck from your past. My plane trip was pretty much my ugly mug reflected in the window, and down on rain clouds. Gimme Amtrack ANY day! Have a good trip!
When my son got stationed at NAS Whidbey, we drove from N.Y. to Wa., and I caught the 'Builder' E-bound at Everett, back. Coach to Chi., and Lakeshore to N.Y., & LOVED the early summer scenery. Did 2 more r/ts, (Xmas, & July), and got to see beautiful scenery without using a lot of gas. Took plane r/t once, & the views sukked! Twiddling thumbs is NO way to see the USA.
Aqui no Brasil sofremos com poucos trens de passageiros, está viagem parece que foi muito muito boa ! Vale a pensa conhecer está região do pais .Mais uma vez aqui só trem de Belo Horizonte-MG a Vitoria - EP.
For those who want more information and details about this trip ...make sure you click on "Show More" in the first part of the info area... Both consists and schedule info for this trip are shown..
Was the train late coming into Seattle? Taking a cruise the next day to Alaska.
Screw Air Travel, that's what I want to say.
Great vlog Rod Bourne. Great camera. =))
nice video--love the music to it
Rod, I enjoyed the video but after LaCrosse I had no idea where we were.
Rod, Where have you been? Haven't seen your recent travel vlogs. Have you stopped traveling for a while?
The town of Skykomish looks terribly run down and depressing. The old RR station is gone, and the famous haunted hotel looks like it's been abandoned. I stayed there one night . . . . after I paid for my room, the desk clerk told me it was haunted by the ghost of a young lady of the evening who was murdered there in the early 1900s. Maids and other service personnel have been known to have left the hotel scared to death, even in broad daylight by apparitions in the upstairs hallways. I slept with the blinds up, fortunately with a bright streetlight just outside my second floor window!
What type/model scanner are you using at your seat? and what channel are you on?

How late were you? Many trains have been outright cancelled this year due to oil trains from North Dakota. (They won't admit that) BNSF would love to see Amtrak go away. Sad if that came true...

rodmanb294 long comment more like trash ooooooooo better drink some milk after that hot spice comment
I will be traveling on he EB from CHI to PDX in May. How did you come to be in Spokane in daylight?
Awesome video quality, though a little commentary would have been nice; like a description of the cars during your walk through of the train, and location along the route.
Also, what was that recording over the scanner at 23:33 about?
the audio at 23:33 is me changing channels on my Baofang Hand Held ...radio voice prompts channel numbers.. The video quality is a function the new Sony FDR Ax100 4k Video camera--4 times the quality of Hi def... Quad HD .. Each time you trigger a clio, the camera can record a still (of when start button is pressed), a 4k video clip and a 1080p clip... all on a SDC card..

I love the video thank you so much for sharing it! I have always waned to take an Amtrak trip but would you recommend a sleeping car roomette or bedroom if you were traveling by yourself or maybe with one other person?
Notice Amtrak on the long distance trains pad the last stop at least 30 minutes. These routes are linear and considerably longer in the US than Europe, trains can fall hours late by the end of the trip outside the northeast corridor. This isn't a four hour trip, its two days or more long. by the time this train reached Fargo it was over an hour late.
45:00 wow! Drivers on that bridge wont have a clue about its beauty!
what kind of food do they serve in the dining car? or do they serve anything and everything? also do they serve alcoholic beverages?
Check out this link to a pdf file of the menu for Amtrak's Eastbound Empire Builder (as an example) www.amtrak.com/ccurl/923/682/Empire-Builder-Dining-Menu-eastbound-train,0.pdf
They might have a bar car for the adults they might have a football game on a tv I never been on one I'm just guessing and yes they server lots of food and how I know that I learned that from a video!
1979WSchamps Basically diner food in the diner. Nothing fancy, Amtrak's diner isn't a five star restaurant. The menu isn't huge, but varies enough to satisfy most people.
Can you reprocess your video so as to eliminate the periodic jerkiness? It seems to occur in 3 second intervals and I have to believe that it comes from how the video was process vs. how the video camera was held.
4k videos will overpower many pc's ... requires a lot of processing power and a graphics card with sizable memory... Select the red hd symbol and watch either in 1080 or 720 to eliminate the jerkiness..
My Mac PowerBook has no trouble at all processing your videos. Great stuff. Hoping to take this trip, but Trump wants to eliminate long distance passenger trains. Bad news. Got to stop that crazy idea!!
great video.. what camera did you use ?
Sony FDR aX100
nice video and subbed your channel
Now do a trip from Seattle to LA on the coast star light train # 11

Trinidad loop in daylight! Lucky you!
Havre, MT at 34:54! That's where I always get on.
Hi, at 29:21, the conductor started to announce "We have a problem with drinking on the train....". What was that regarding?
I guess that only east coast trains have a flip-up sink and toilet in a roomette.
Man4Machine People were getting drunk .... Only Viewliner Roomette have sinks and toilets.
Man4Machine People were getting drunk .... Only Viewliner Roomette have sinks and toilets.
Thanks. I knew they were available from DC to Fla. I had heard that Amtrak will be implementing them west of here as well, but I'm not an expert. Have you heard that? I wish to go from DC to Austin, but don't favour sharing bathrooms. I'd rather buy a room. Nice videos by the way. Thanks again.
Man4Machine Superliner bedrooms have toilet and shower combined, along with a sink in the cabin. Texas Eagle and Capitol Limited are Superliner trains. However, unlike Viewliner roomettes, Superliner roomettes don't have a toilet, just a sink. Superliner sleeper coaches to have more than one public restroom to share with the other roomettes.
Rod The new Viewliner II sleepers being built and will soon be introduced to the fleet will not have toilets in the roomettes, just sinks like the Superliners. So in the future you could end up in a Viewliner I or a Viewliner II sleeper. The main reason for the change, is passengers didn't like having a toilet adjacent to their bunk, or seat in their roomette. No privacy if there was another booked in the same roomette.
It stinks that I wan'ted to hear the rest of that announcement about the drinking problem. Who got escorted off the train?
not sure who they were.. and it wasn't included in the announcement
nice video
Thanks
Where is Marias Pass?
4K resolution requires superspeed internet, which I dont have. This film shows in 480p.
Very interesting "ride along" train video though.
You got Engine 184 on your train.
Not in 4K, max quality on video is 720 HD.
Some web browsers just don't support 4K. It's working fine for me on Google Chrome...
How you can walk and maintain your balance impresses me. What was your top speed? I know the Texas Eagle is 79 mph
Not sure what top speed was.... Balance is maintained by walking with a wider stance..
Teil 1 und 2 machen Lust aufs selbst Mitfahren ;-)
Ob ich mal nach USA komme?
i like amtrak video
Love the videos Rod! Great work! Any more to come in 2015?
Possible trip on the Cardinal DC-Chicago and Texas Eagle Chi to Dallas in March
nice vid. extra effort is apparent on your end but would feel more comfortable about my future trip if the all the dudes in front kept their eyes peeled forward, object on tracks is how the latest derailment happened
what happend with the drinking problems on the train

Rod, it's been 4 years sent this video, when you going to make another? 6/24/2018
Awesome video where did you find the music
Amazing, sadly all this emptiness gave me an impression that the services are heading towards an inevitable end. Americans should make train travel more relevant to their life. There's already example of train beating airline in China, if you really wish, you could do that too.
doesnt this ride take 40 something hours?
takes awhile but very enjoyable...
Trip takes about 44 hours.
I'm viewing this video in the uk and It would have been far more interesting if there was more in the way of commentary re' the different stops city, town names.I struggled to see, looking at the station signs, where the train was at any given time. When a stop location was announced it was ok.

u had 145? on AMTK 29 & now 184 ur lucky man!
Departed on time. Just kept getting later and later as the trip when on. At one point, almost 5 hours late. WHY?? Freight traffic interfering? Bad weather? Scheduling too tight for reality? I'm sorry. I just don't get it.
Is that a Baofeng radio I hear? UV-5R? :)
Nigel P. you have a good ear.... Yes it is! 5r+
I picked one up to listen as the trains go past my residence.. I'd recognize that voice anywhere.
SethMethCs... Check your settings... 4k works for others...and me..
1080p Is For Me.
P.S. When someone asks do u wanna go for a ride to Washington, make sure to ask state, or D.C., ha-ha.
I have been on this route about a dozen times, I love the empire builders (7, 8, 27, 28). but mostly at night. Empire Builder is quite an ironic title.
+harrier331 Actually Iconic
Rod
I meant ironic, as in the US has no Empire.
Actually "historic" is the word. After all, in the time of '54º40" or Fight', empire is exactly what the US government had in mind. And that included much of what is now Canada! Check out where 54º40" is.
Harrier 331 the Amtrak train named The Empire Builder was named in honor of James J. Hill who was blind in his left eye built the Great Northern Railway without our any Federal land grants. He built a railroad Empire with he Great Northern, Spokane,Portland & Seattle railroad. He bought the Burlington, the Northern Pacific, the Colorado & Southern and the Denver & Fort Worth railroads. In 1970 they all merged into the Burlington Northern. James J.Hill worked with the track building crew, he even shoveled snow sided by side with his workers. That is why the train is called the Empire Builder. If you have a chance to borrow a book titled American railroads from the library, do so, read about the Great Northern Railway & James J.Hill.
Amtrack more like star wars ooooooooooooooooooooooooo daaaaaang better call the cops to report shots fired
