  • Climb aboard Train 69, the Adirondack, for an international rail journey to Montreal. During the month of October, Amtrak adds former Great Northern Great Dome #10031 "Ocean View" to the train north of Albany for better viewing of fall colors along Lake Champlain.
    As of 2019, Amtrak is no longer operating the dome car on the Adirondack. I took one last trip aboard in the fall of 2018 when it was all but confirmed that the dome car would not be returning.

    I've said it before, and I'll say it again: What a beautiful rail journey capture on film! To JBS319: Bravo!
    I totally dig it when JBS319 zooms in on the dump-truck racing (if that's what it's called -- please, would someone reading this correct me?). It's a little slice of small-town life -- a small town filled with people who have big hearts. And then JBS319, being the true artist that he is, zooms out and we see the magnificent mountain range! ... Another favorite scene: the bridal party in red, flanking the beautiful bride -- and the adorable flower girl at the end. They're standing on a deck, and they're waving! Whenever I re-view this video (and that's often), these scenes remind me of the many reasons that I prefer a rail journey, when possible and practical, to my destination.
    I don't have anything against flying, and, well, there are plenty of destinations that we can't take a LD train to ... yet. Swiss rail engineers are working on a very LD rail route beneath the Atlantic Ocean, connecting Continental Europe to the North American continent. I hope that I'll be alive to experience that! I might not be able to afford to ride that train (I'm still working on saving money to do a Trans-Atlantic cruise for a milestone birthday four years from now), but I'll be able to watch the UA-cam videos documenting that amazing journey!

    One of the few east coast trains that has a dome car - from Albany to Montreal. Generally too large for the small tunnels into NYC and Washington DC. So they are only used north of NYC and south of Washington (like on the Auto train as well). I don't believe any of the Amtrak trains use them anywhere else east of the Mississippi on the east coast routes.

      It looks that way, usually, before 8:15 a.m. -- yes, even pre-Covid. Please note that passengers waiting for boarding time for the Adirondack are already queued up behind the sign for Train #69, close to the gate. JBS didn't film that line (usually a long line has formed by 7:30 a.m., if not earlier) because he's focusing on the train's timetable.
      Note that his video is about the train, not the passengers (why I love his videos), and the train's journey. But in this video, trust me: There's a long line of passengers waiting out of view. They've already cleared the Canada Desk: passport inspection, e-boarding pass inspection, and obtaining their international luggage tags and that little paper ticket that you MUST give the Amtrak employee just before descending to the track.
      I view this video and the one for the return leg several times a year because I ride the Adirondack to Montreal at least once every year. This year is the exception due to Covid. Well, we'll see if the U.S.-Canada borders open this fall or early winter. Due to the borders being closed since March, I've watched this video and the return video three times already this year. I love the trip that much! The Hudson RIver Valley scenery is fantastic, and just when you think the woods or river is monotonous, watch out: If you fall asleep you might miss seeing a deer or American Bald Eagle or a beaver with beaver dam. I love the wetlands, too. And the bridges and rail signs, too. Not that you have to be a "railroad aficionado (a)" to like this video -- I am, as well as a lover of Quebec province -- but if you love nature, the Adirondack is one of a few Amtrak trains that will blow your mind with what you see beyond the window.
      When you get closer to the border, the train coasts along Lac Champlain -- amazing!
      Last November, I was upset that there was little snow on the ground and none on the mountains (though, there were snow-covered mountains in Quebec province, including Montreal's majestic Mont-Royal). However, I was happy that the train arrived AHEAD of schedule -- at 6:20 p.m. It can happen! I had enough time to walk to my Downtown hotel (6 blocks away), relaxingly check in, and then have a nice-paced supper at the food court in la Complexe Desjardins Mall a block away on blvd. Rene-Levesque. I wanted to dine at the mall so I could watch the holiday toy train display and dancing musical fountain at the mall. Instead of having to wait until the next day to do that, I saved time (thanks to Amtrak) in doing that on arrival night. I had a blast! Montreal was quite welcoming that trip. Baby, it was cold outside, yes, but I tucked into the Underground City and one of many cafes to keep warm. And I love cold climes.
      But this pandemic ... I'll leave that unsaid. I hope the U.S.-Canada borders East to West, West to East open soon.

      I believe that you can't even use the bathroom. I imagine one reason for that would be, if a passenger is trying to dispose of contraband, he or she could do so in the bathroom, so ...
      One time I was on the Adirondack, a German Shepherd dog accompanied one of two Canadian Customs officers. The dog sniffed something, and the next thing we knew, three young (college-age) men were escorted into the empty cafe car to be interrogated. It was like a movie, I tell you.

      I am hoping that JBS will reply. In case he does not have a chance to soon, please allow me to say that The Adirondack is a journey filled with wonders of nature (if you have not gone yet, try for early to mid-October for the fall foliage and the domed car). I mean, you are riding through the Hudson River Valley, the Adirondack Mountains, and seeing everything from lily pad-carpeted ponds to apple-munching deer (the latter if you're lucky).
      When the train gets closer to its destination, you can see Vermont across the water, and peer down into beautiful Lake Champlain as the train tilts confidently. You also will see farms along the way, beaver lodges, various birds, and closer still to Montreal you will see miles and miles of cornfield.
      Finally, you will spot the cityscape, with glorious Mont-Royal (Mount Royal, or just call it "The Mountain" as locals do) silhouetted behind the buildings. The Mountain is the center of town, and you will find yourself flocking to it as do the local people. Everyone goes into ecstasy over Old Montreal -- and it IS pretty and quaint. But, by God, Mont-Royal is a sight of nature to behold, especially covered in orange, gold, burgundy and green!
      With Canada celebrating its 150th anniversary of federation and the city of Montreal celebrating its 375th birthday, let us all take Adirondack Train No. 69 to cosmopolitan, multicultural Montreal -- part of a fabulous province -- and check out provinces farther east as well as west and north.

    • @JBS319
      @JBS319  7 років тому +4

      Absolutely do it. It's one of the great journeys of North America's railroads and probably the most scenic day train on the continent. The slit-windowed Amfleets do detract somewhat, but Montreal passengers get long distance Amfleet II cars with larger windows. The best views, of course, are from the dome car when it is running.

    • @mariposapapillon9261
      @mariposapapillon9261 7 років тому +8

      Yes, yes and so much more than that. I hate it when the know-it-all passengers try to laugh things off, because it's serious business -- crossing the border. People forget that they are visitors, guests, in Canada, and that they can be refused entry. By the way, I really like that Canadian Customs officers come on board and that passengers don't get off -- unless something is very wrong -- because the process is quite professional (same goes for the reverse trip, crossing the border to the U.S.). However, that being said, procedures could change, so always be sure to check the U.S. State Department website to find out what documents you need, and please make sure it(they) is(are) up-to-date. Be sure also that your passport isn't going to expire too soon after you return -- you can read about that on the State Department website under CANADA.
      One time I made this particular rail journey, one-half of an elderly couple apparently was missing certain paperwork. His wife was on the train, on the verge of tears. It was like a movie. A sad one. At the last minute, she decided to exit the train in order to be with her husband.Quite a few of us were touched by that, and we waved the woman goodbye, hoping that things would work out and that she and her husband would be driven onto Montreal, IF that's what happens after papers are cleared and everything's okay.
      IMHO, it's the details of making sure you have your documents and making sure your luggage is within the requirements, etc., that remind all of us who love to ride Amtrak's Adirondack to Montreal (and Maple Leaf to Toronto) that there's an immense sense of responsibility in traveling in general and in traveling by rail internationally in particular. I'm always aware and respectful of the *privilege* of being permitted to enter Canada. That makes the arrival at Central Station and the vacation days that follow such a thrill! I only can imagine that it feels similarly to Canadians who've cleared the border and are heading to New York City. I absolutely adore Canada and absolutely love my country, so it's a win-win!
      Please note that passports are inspected a certain amount of time prior to boarding, and you will be given an actual boarding pass at the Canada Check-in desk. (Passengers traveling to Toronto and to Montreal have to check in at the desk, at NYC Penn, when prompted to do so by personnel there.)
      The only part of this rail experience that I detest is how smelly the bathrooms are about six hours into the journey. Annoying, but nowhere as near as the bathroom self-maintenance situation (lol), is trying to keep up with when the cafe car will be open. If you, say, have a little treat from the cafe car around 11 a.m. and then fall asleep too long, you might be out of luck for several hours.
      Oh, and then there are those disappearing beverages, foods and snacks. Better to bring some items on board with you (but make sure you previously checked the government website about what provisions you can and can't bring with you across the border). I learned the hard way on my first rail trip on No. 69: I was jonesing for a pizza (it's a mini DiGiorno that's nuked by the cafe car's food attendant), but there were no more. No burgers, hotdogs and bottled water, either. Be warned, and have a fun trip from New York City to Montreal. Bon voyage!

      Mariposa Papillon Pretty soon, it will be like in Vancouver, where one goes through US customs prior to boarding in Montréal and one goes through Canadian customs after alighting.

    • @JBS319
      @JBS319  7 років тому +5

      On the Cascades to/from Vancouver, Canadian and American customs takes place at Vancouver Pacific Central Station. On the Adirondack northbound, Canadian customs agents board the train at the LaColle border crossing immediately after crossing the border. Southbound passengers on the Adirondack are checked on board at Rouses Point station. Both of these checkpoints will be replaced by a single facility at Montreal Central Station with preclearance in the coming years, allowing the Vermonter to "return" to Montreal. The Maple Leaf can never get preclearance as there are several stops on the Canadian side between Niagara Falls and Toronto. To Toronto, Canadian customs checks passengers on board the train at Niagara Falls, Ontario station. Going the other way, passengers must disembark at Niagara Falls, NY to pass through US customs in the station, a new procedure since the new station (with its high level platform) was opened.

    • @mariposapapillon9261
      @mariposapapillon9261 7 років тому +3

      Aha! This is good news! Thank you. A VIA Rail employee had told me a little over a year ago that preclearance at MTL's Central Station might be in the works. That makes sense and will offer better scrutiny where security is concerned.
      Keep on presenting these fascinating videos. My first rail trip experience was to Savannah, Georgia on a steamer. I don't remember where we departed from, as I was only 3 years old at the time. My family was living in New York City at the time. JBS, might you know which train that was and where it had departed from (at the beginning of its route)? I can recall my mother lifting my little body as we leaped a short distance to the platform -- but again, I was three so "leap" might be an overstatement. Everything was huge. The train was black, I believe, and super huge. I recall the seating inside the train being an olive-green, perhaps a hue lighter? My mom's aunt lived in Savannah, and we were visiting her and her family. I MUST return to Savannah ... via the rails, of course!

On one video, he actually said it was necessary (or did he say I important?) to bring a scanner and GPS with you. Never thought of bringing either. I didn’t even know you could buy something to listen in to the staff. And his voice annoys me.
