@Greg Valentine I don't think those scales are that accurate for testing body fat, I am guessing he was probably around 18 IMO. But if anything hopefully the scale would provide a relative measure so he can compare the before and after numbers and that's really where the value of using that scale comes in.

Man common you realy use this crap of scale. I had this scale ones and its a SCAM. Do one test. Get some dumbels and go on the scale. You will get half weight of the dumbels shown as body fat. Or go on it with socks. IT will still show body fat even this is impossible. Better throw this scale away.

For everyone wondering. He started at around 24/25% body fat, and ended at around 17. The results you see visually are totally realistic, but do not even think that the scale measurements are true. Personally I'd say he didn't loose anything more than than 1lb of muscle mass, his maintenance calories were higher than the realistic range they should be (between 1800 and 2100 depending on the metabolism) so there was some fat loss still left on the table. Visually, and total weight loss, it's totally realistic and he did a very good job, these results should be achievable for, I'd say 90% of men that are in similar shape.

So to fuel the abs in a workout the body would be more likely to use the fat near the abs rather than say your ass or arms. Of course 99% of fat loss it total body but spot reduction is not a complete myth.

You did better than you think. Your calculations of ‘muscle mass’ is actually lean (non-fat) tissue, which includes bones, water, muscle etc. Importantly it also includes glycogen (+ the water it attracts) reserves and food in your gut. Both of these things would be depleted significantly and would account for 5 pounds of your weight loss. These will bounce back in about 3 days of you eating normally again. You probably lost no muscle, and a couple of kg of fat. You need about 9-10,000 kCal of deficit to lose 1 kg of fat, and you were only on a 300 kCal deficit per day (if your calculations of maintenance were correct) so with the cardio probably giving you a further 300 kCal of deficit you were destined to lose about 5 pounds of fat in 30 days.

@@Darnell-ic7my Then he should have put Lean Body Mass instead of Muscle Mass. Those are two very different things, since body mass involved muscle mass. It also hurt him in the end since body mass doesn't just involve muscle mass, so his final calculation of "how much muscle" was maintained is wrong, since that is body mass and not muscle mass. He likely did in fact maintain his muscle mass and instead lost water weight, which contributed to lean body mass.

I have no doubt he did lose weight and fat but the choice of pics was highly misleading (as are most B&A pics to be honest- people use techniques like tanning and posture to make the after look better). Would have been better to use 6:23, but I wouldn't be surprised if he pushed his stomach out in the before pic and tensed it in the after as well to make the effect seem even more dramatic.

This is a great video demonstrating that CICO doesn't work. You don't just cut calories. There's such a thing as "metabolic adaptation" which slows your metabolism down in response to a caloric deficit. You have to be careful with what kinds of calories you consume so as to keep your endocrine system (your hormones) in proper balance. A calorie is _not_ a calorie. Do low carb and/or fasting to get into ketosis and watch that fat fly off you.

Scales are very inaccurate in measuring BF% or body composition in general. The method used is electrical interference, so it sends a small electric pulse through your body. The problem with this is that there are only two points of contact and the pulse will try to find the shortest distance to its exit. This means it'll typically only go up one leg and down the other, bypassing the rest of your body.
Calipers are a much more accurate method of measurement. You'll have to calculate the result yourself (there are plenty of calculators online), and the calipers are really cheap, less than $10

You should do this again but this time use a ketogenic diet with intermittent fasting. Get rid of all the carbs eat high fat foods and only eat in an 8 hour window. It may take 2 weeks for your body to adjust but once it does you will feel much better. The loss of muscle mass may not be a bad thing in the short term. Autophagy will cause your body to consume the low quality proteins in your body when you add high healthy fat and protein you will be replacing those damaged cells with high quality cells.

Try high intensity interval training (HIIT) every morning, it will increase the normal amount of calories you burn if you do cardio or HIIT in the morning; working out in the morning also boosts your metabolism (esp bc your going to be sweating and drinking water, which will also help flush toxins out [quicker recovery] and push fats through quicker)

Its sad to know that all I'd have to do to lose weight at 255lbs is exercise regularly. My current diet is roughly 3,000 or a little more, with an active job (12,000+ steps/day no lifting or cardio etc.)
Cut that down to 2,700 a day and exercise 4 days a week and I'd go down to a normal weight, but that 400 calories is difficult to do. I constantly crave carbs when I cut myself short and struggle not to over eat. Weighing food and counting carbs/calories seems like additional work I don't want to do, though it would be good for me. I'm not sure when I got to be so lazy of a person.

There is a thing where you went wrong in this video, although it is great overall. The 141 pounds of “muscle” arent actually all muscle, but rather everything in your body that is not fat. This includes waterweight, which you will lose some of during a cut, so i dont think you lost nearly that much muscle.

  • @joelportwood5902

Yes a little misleading, but for people to want to click it has to have some shock value. If you're unfamiliar with the weight loss world don't think you're going to lose a gut in a month. He was just pushing out his stomach in before pic and flexing in after. That being said, the protocol will yield fat loss results. I do feel like 2700 calories might be high for a 170lb guy trying to get lean. Also I'd tend for breakfast to be more protein dense as opposed to a bowl full of fruit and granola (all carbs). Egg whites/eggs with a small portion of oatmeal is great or, if you're like me and aren't hungry in the morning, a simple shake (isoflex or some low carb option is key) will satisfy you until lunch or a midmorning snack of a handful of nuts and some rice cakes or low-fat popcorn (just read calories and aim for a serving that's 150-200 calories.

I agree, especially with the whole trend to cut sugars aka South Beach and Glycemic index. He did experience a lot of hunger pains and cravings at night and that is a big side effect of eating aimple sugar (high on glycemic index) foods like bananas. Having said that, overall, he lost 10 lbs in the month which really backs the caloric restriction theory he set out to prove. His conclusions were that he would have included more protein in his diet to reduce his muscle loss. I suspect the first place he would need to cut out would be bananas. There is no miracle science to weight loss (calories in/calories out) the challenge is in finding a sustainable and healthy weight/fat management system.
