If u got any old chisels in bad shape it would be interesting to see if you could turn a aluminum pen. Not sure if it would work but it would be interesting

I've recently bought a length of 5/8th inch brass rod. Thinking about it. We'll see :)

Just something to be aware of when turning the ends of the acrylic...DON'T GO TOO THIN....Your brass tube will show through!

      Hi Steve,
Yes, translucent acrylic is a problem that way that's for sure. Thanks for commenting :)

Great work Ron, they look lovely. You did a nice job on the wet sanding too!

So, here Ron, basically you just did the same polishing procedure you would do for a CA finish. It's just the application you have to to learn and get comfortable with applying. So, in simple terms, you have half of the CA finish down.

Last week, a fellow pen-turner was over and gave me about a foot of vinyl-type rod from which I will be turning cone shape bushings that apparently the CA glue won't stick to. I'm definitely going to be soon doing the CA finish in wood thing. :) Gotta finish "The Chair" first though, lol.

Ron Calverley I don't use them, I just prep my pen bushings to keep that from happening. It cuts my production time as I don't have to take my turned blanks off the mandrel to put on the nylons. But, that is my way, not particularly for everyone.

    Very nice, Ron!
Slow is the keyword for the Micromesh, they don't like heat much. They do however last for a loooooong time. The polish does contain abrasive, just leaves scratches that are too small for the human eye to perceive. Congrats on the new medium!

Thanks for that info Bill. That's really good to know.

Stephen Ogle (another UA-cam turner) put me on to Maquire's PlastX polish (available at Walmart for a fraction of the cost of HUT) and it works wonders on acrylic parts. You might give it a try once you have finished your supply of HUT.

Thanks for that tip. However here at WalMart Canada the Maquire's PlastX polish it's not much cheaper that what I paid at William Wood-Write for the Hut Ultra Gloss. I got curious and just Googled it. Another thought Michael is that we penturners have to support our local suppliers to help keep them in business (as long as they don't become ridiculously over priced that is) or we'll find ourselves having to get our kits directly from Asian companies. But thanks for your input here :)

Nice job on the pens Ron but please, please stop wrapping your sandpaper around the project as you did with the rougher grits. It WILL one day catch on itself and if you are not quick you will find your hand being drawn into the spinning lathe.

      Hey Duke,
I'd never thought of that, but yes, I can envision it actually happening. So far I've been lucky I guess. Most serious thing I've had is that I'll occasionally lose a piece of sandpaper to the dust collector. Thanks!

Great looking pens for a first try with acrylic Ron. You're gonna get hooked.
Question: Has the dust collector ever "stolen" a piece of sandpaper out of your hand while sanding or do I just have that problem on occasion?
Also, you can always throw and old bath towel over that plastic to catch the water. That way if you spill the container it will absorb it and not just run all over and down in the plastic.
    Those sure are purrrrrrrrrty. JimE

Thanks for the complement. Yes, I've lost 3 or 4 to the dust collector. Doesn't hurt anything --- just annoying, lol. As for the towel idea, it's a good idea. I'll likely be doing that next time.

The gold flecks in the acrylic really stands out once polished. Very nice pen. Being in the states, does he ship here? I would like to order one of these blanks.

Last I heard was that he stopped shipping internationally, however I'd phone him anyway to verify. Could be that if you were willing to prepay the extra he'd make an exception. I really don't know. If you ordered enough stuff, it might make it worth everyone's while. See www.penblanks.ca/ his phone number is at the top of his page :)

Enjoy your videos. Based on your enjoyment of microscopes, I was just curious what your prior occupation was?

I retired from the Winnipeg bus depot as an express clerk Worked there since 1973. Nothing glamorous, but it was a living. What I did before that was even less glamorous --- but I won't go there, lol. Thanks for asking though.
