- This video documents how I replaced the main thermostat on my Audi Q7 3.0 v6 diesel. I am not a mechanic and take no responsibility for any damage or injury caused by anyone attempting this procedure. if your unsure it's best to let the professionals do it. I hope this video helps someone wanting to know what's involved with this task. Thanks for watching.

Thanks! Tip on loosening the belt was great!
Thanks for the feedback, really glad the video helped.
good job on the video, but it would be very helpful to know the year of the car.
2008
What was the reason for changing this part? Our Q7 keeps overheating so I was guessing it could be the thermostat. The glow plug sign keeps coming so I’m not sure
I changed this thermostat because my Q7 was actually running cold. As soon as I started driving at speed the engine temperature started dropping and with it the cabin heat. To me this meant that the thermostat was stuck open and the engine was being over cooled. The problem is corrected now. I suppose if a thermostat sticks in the closed position it could result in the opposite condition (I.e. overheating).
@@bumbleshufflesdiy5908 Okay I’ll try that and see what happens.Thank you 👍🏼
I hope you get sorted. Ps the best thing to do is read the fault codes and see where that leads you (rather than just replacing parts if you know what I mean).
Hello mate, great video. Did you have to loosen that nut before rotating the tensioner?
No from memory I just went straight for the tensioner without touching any nuts. When u turn the tensioner the belt slacks off (well on my car anyway) and then when u let pressure off the tensioner it returns to its normal position again. Does that help?
@@bumbleshufflesdiy5908 thank you mate👍
How did you bleed the cooling system?
My electric water pump failed in the wheel arch and I replaced the coolant pipes that go to the expansion tank. One from the engine and one from the radiator. I don't have any heaters, there's a lot of pressure in the coolant pipes.
There are a few bleed valves. One at the front of the engine pretty much directly above the thermostat that I replaced and then one towards the back on the top of the engine. They look like little bolts going into coolant lines. There is a third I believe down the back of the engine towards the cabin but I couldn't find it so just used the other two. If you look closely you will see them. I think they were 10mm or thereabouts. It hardly needed bled to be honest as no air worth talking about came out. Maybe I got lucky tho. No issues since mind you after lots of driving and coolant level is staying the same.
@@bumbleshufflesdiy5908 thanks for the help, I appreciate it, I'll let you know how it goes.
Yes do. Good luck.
Ist das Thermostat beim Q5 3.0tdi an der gleichen stelle.
Sorry, I don't know the answer to this question.
Can I ask how did you know your thermostat had failed? What we’re your symptoms?
My symptoms were an engine that was running too cool. If I was in City traffic it maintained normal operating temperature but as soon as I hit motorway type speeds (especially on a cool day) the engine temperature dropped off and my cabin heating along with it.
@@bumbleshufflesdiy5908 yeah I have the same issue with my wife's car... unless it is really hot it never gets up to a decent temp... not difficult to do, especially if you already have a set of torques

Hi I’ve had same issue I’ve fitted new thermostat and it’s still doing it? Air blows hot in car but soon as I drive the temperature gauge goes down but if I part up long enough it sits back at 90 ??
Any thoughts??
In this video I changed the main thermostat but there is another thermostat somewhere on these engines from memory. I think it's located on top of the engine in the middle and under the high pressure fuel lines. I had to have that thermostat replaced under warranty. If this has failed on yours also, you will have the engine cooling down while driving along and then it heating back up again whilst stationary/ slow speeds. Worth investigating with yours.
@@bumbleshufflesdiy5908 thanks so much for getting back with information
Is that the egr cooler ? It looks a big job if so I’d have to pay cash for it done as it’s to much for me to handle is there any way round it with mapping ect? Again thanks for advice really appreciate it I’m in uk so not sure how much this repair going to cost
Hi, thanks for the video, can you please provide the replacement thermostat part number and where to purchase it?
