I had the privilage of seeing Jimmy Webb last year in a small, intimate show here in Okla. City. I am a 52 year old died in the wool rock and roller. It took me years to come to appreciate the art of this kind of songwriting. This man has written some of the greatest songs...ever. He played around an hour and then left the small stage. We got him back for an encore and of course he played Galveston...my personal fave. I actually started crying and when he left the stage and walked by me he saw me. He kind of grabbed my arm and said something like " that's what that song is supposed to do ". Man that was a great night. Thanks Jimmy.
+scarecrowbike Oklahoma seems to produce more than their share of caring and wonderful people. Having previously worked in the blood industry, I believe Okies are the most generous in the nation. Your state is fortunate to have the Oklahoma Blood Institute. It is an excellent organization and should be supported above the others.
Thanks for sharing that amazing anecdote about what in fact is the moment that means the most to a songwriter. The one you shared. (Just quoted in my posting this day, citing you as a 'kindred spirit.' Thanks again, Jerry Murphy. I have a "Jimmy Webb" thread going in the "other celebrities" section of the Forums at Sinatra Family dot com -- quoting you this day.
Jimmy is a genius. All of us who have studied music for decades, and learned how to play several instruments, wish we had his talent for writing lyrics and melodies. Simply terrific.
Yes, you said it best, Jimmy is a genius. Just watched his decade old live daytime TV appearance with Carly Simon. At the Sinatra Family dot com site I've opened a dormant Jimmy Webb thread (in the "other celebrities" section of their FORUMS) and commented this day on the significance of two great songwriters who wrote both words and music to all their songs "like Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and very few others." The few others, including Frank (Guys & Dolls) Loesser -- as they significantly picked one of his obscure songs (Spring Will Be A Little Late This Year) for their duet. Thanks for posting, John Terrana.
only a true songsmith like jimmy could write songs for such a diverse group of artists like: glen campbell. the fifth dimension, brooklyn bridge, and richard harris! a true songwriter and one of america's best!
Just 6 days after Cyclone Katrina had Hit New Orleans ...I met Jimmy Webb when he was doing a Concert Tour DownUnder here in Sydney...I was Star Struck for days after and still am when I think of it...He is one of those very likeable charismatic Guys with Enormous Talent & Humility...I wanted to adopt him as my New Best Friend !!
The moment that means the most to you as a songwriter Just watching this follow up (to Didn't We) -- Jimmy in his 20's singing BY THE TIME I GET TO PHOENIX (with the chords he had in mind when composing the song). I was moved to tears. Then I read the posted "comment" (below) from "Jerry Murphy" a kindred spirit! I know this song from a radio station in my sign TV, but had no idea it was by him, it`s sang by other singer. Today I heard at afternoon, paying attention to the lyric and thinking in put here to see if was the same song. And what a surprise it is!
You got that right, Anita Huie. Like fine wine, his songs sound finer to our ears than when we were young as he is in this magic moment of time captured on video. Isn't this the best time to be alive? Thanks for posting.
I'm glad that Jimmy is such a great song writer, and met Glen Campbell because Glen sure made hits out of so many of his songs. I don't think Jimmy would have made it as a singer or maybe I'm just so used to how Glen sings them.
By the time I get to Phoenix she'll be rising She'll find the note I left hangin' on her door She'll laugh when she reads the part that says I'm leavin' 'Cause I've left that girl so many times before. By the time I make Albuquerque she'll be working She'll probably stop at lunch and give me a call But she'll just hear that phone keep on ringin' Off the wall, that's all. By the time I make Oklahoma she'll be sleepin' She'll turn softly and call my name out low And she'll cry just to think I'd really leave her Tho' time and time I try to tell her so She just didn't know I would really go.
If you think Glenn Campbell was a better singer, please check out Jimmy Webb's album called Ten Easy Pieces. You can find it on UA-cam. The mature Webb gives us a hauntingly beautiful album, with unforgettable interpretations of his own writing. I loved Glenn Campbell also, but the songs are completely different sung by Webb. Ten Easy Pieces is a treasure to which you will regret listening.

This is one of his better vocal efforts but it's amazing how much better Glen Campbell sounded on all his songs. Campbell gave the music its symmetry and tempo. Jimmy does some histrionic ad lib vocalizing here to add drama to the song, but the song is so melodic and subtle it really doesn't need it. He's one of the great story tellers as a lyricist and his melodies are always near perfect It just requires a better singer for that to come out. Cut to Glen Campbell and Marilyn Mccoo.
He may be a fabulous song writer but his playing does not fit the mood of the song at all.. and his singing is... well, as a fellow professional I wont comment
I really love his songs. They're brilliant. But I can't handle his un-musical voice and the way he interprets his own music. Others do a much better job, and that's one reason the songs were hits. As well, I could have done without the "I wish I were black" routine with the "oh yes she wills"... Embarrassing. I don't like his books either. I have two of them. Very disappointing.
What a talented and beautiful man.

Jimmy a great Okie.
+jerry murphy Thanks for your post! It inspired me to check his tour schedule. I can catch him in 2 weeks not too far way. Looking forward to it.

He wrote the most haunting and beautiful melodies.
He plays the piano so beautifully. Thank you Jimmy for all you have given to us in music.
Amen.
I saw Jimmy years later at the Fairmont SF what a writer n singer ❤️☮️🤩 and all the stories of glen ❤️☮️
I like all things pertaining to Jimmy Webb: singing, songwriting, piano, & storytelling. Finally, I was able to see him this year..and meet him.

And complex chord structures in some of his songs!

That is a pretty amazing performance. From the heart.
An iconic lyricist and pianist for my generation. Thank you, Jimmy.
Hello Kathy, how are things going with you?
What a great storyteller.

Fuckin Jimmy Webb is amazing...I always come back to his music when I'm at my most Zen
Wow, that was beautiful. Makes one wonder why Jimmy did not perform some of his beautiful tunes himself. 😁
Get his album “Ten easy pieces”
Just a great composer !!!

What a talented man!
Happy Birthday, Jimmy.
Esse está eternamente incluso no roll dos grandes compositores e intérpretes.
great era

Ist's like Jim Steinmann with all the singers
Who else could get away with rhyming Albuquerque with "working"? Love all his songs.

Lucky for Jimmy legacy as a great composer that most of his great musical success were sung by great singers .
This song.
A young Jimmy
Best Songwriters can't sing a lick

I believe this is how Jimmy wrote this song for Glen to make it a hit for himself.
His way of singing reminds me of Neil Young's but less nasal.
Great song writer, glad he got Glenn Campbell to sing them though!
Very nice! Can you please add the location and date of this performance to the video description above?
Funny seeing Jim circa 1971 (I assume) in what now amounts to "period costume." Fantastic performance, anyway.
Heat movie brought me here
Wie stark ist nicht dein Zauberton, Herr Webb!!!
Jimmy Webb is Laura Nyro
Love him to bits. But I have to say that piano is a bit busy.
❤️🇺🇾
Thanks for posting these rare Webb vids. Are they available on DVD somewhere?
He wrote a lot of songs about his girlfriend Susie, Linda Ronstadt's cousin.
how do you get this good on planet earth ?? -- If you are a songwriter -- throw it in now and get a job -- you will never get here --
His way of appearance reminds me of John Lennon's.
Who needs Chrorus, who needs reffrain. xD
Beautiful piano playing but it's too busy for the vocals, needs more space...good when Glenn did it to emphasize the vocals...
of course she laughed reading the note... 'cause she was happy you went away to sing somewhere else... hangiiieeeinnn doooooeeeeer...
😂 that's a bit mean, he might read these..

Err...leave it to Glen Campbell 😯
Great pianist but Johnny rivers does it better
