That black coating on the toe is a rubberized paint that helps to protect the longevity of the toe without compromising casual style with a full rubberized toe. When it starts to wear, you can re-coat it. You can find the product online or take it to an outdoor shoe repairist. Hope that helps! ✌
Also live in the mountains and have the gortex version. Definitely waterproof, and got these for about $150. Do wish I had the brown ones you show, they look better than the all grey I purchased.
I wore a pair of those in Afghanistan for about 1 yr 3 months. I took them on R&R to St Lucia and hiked up the Gran Piton mountain. Great shoe overall.
I just broke these in during a week long trip in Quebec. It is early days but I found them extremely comfortable in various terrains from urban to trail. The look of them also enabled me to not have to pack multiple shoes as they were perfectly suitable to wear out to dinner. Thanks for another great review.
Love these . Trail 2650 probably my favorite shoe . Have almost all the colors and wear them daily . Only wish they were just a tad wider , even the WIDE is tight. Other than that, a perfect shoe .
I've had these shoes 7 or 8 months, I really like them. I have been a American made New Balance shoe wearer for a very long time. New Balance stopped making my favorite shoe 12 years ago. I LEARNED FROM THAT EXPERIENCE, ORDERED TWO extra PAIRS OF THESE at $169.00 just to put in the closet. These shoes show almost no wear, and no wear on the soles. Way better built then my New Balance. 240lbs 13EE true to size.
Overall, pretty good shoes, so far (wearing mine right now), but there are MUCH better options for actual trail running. These are "lightweight hikers", but a good 2-3oz heavier per shoe than a real trail runner. A few miles once or twice a week on buffed out trails might be ok, if you're not in a hurry. As for the lack of waterproofing, there's nothing worse than getting a "waterproof" shoe wet inside. It can take days to dry. Definitely not what you want in a long-range hiker.
I hate hate HATE Gore Tex membranes in shoes, so this was an advertising point for me. The faux-rubberized toe cap isn't my favorite, but that's minor.
I have read reviews of hikers who have gone long distances, rock hiking, etc., and their testimony is that these shoes hang in there and are still going strong. I am planning on using them on my thru hike of CDT. I would tend to believe that if they do not live their guarantee one could send them into Danner and get a replacement set for free.
With '2650' in the shoe name Danner is specifically targeted towards the Long Distance thru Hiking audience. Most long distance backpackers/hikers have a strong preference for lightweight shoes that are not waterproof. Breathable lightweight and quick drying are the qualities they are looking for.
I think that painted on toe cap is only on a few models. There are a few other leather models, and it looks like to smooth leather models where there is stitching or a seam right there in the middle of that toe bumper.
Just used some Kiwi Express Black shoe polish on my 2650 toe box. It worked! The scuffs showing the tan material underneath is black again and looks great. It only took 5 minutes. It is annoying that this material isn't tougher, but at least the fix is easy.
i've had these shoes for a little over a year now, and if you are looking for something to last that long, this is not a good choice. i've not even used them that much, but after about 10months the cushing and padding really starts to show wear and after a year, i have to give it a day to rest for the foam to recover before using them because if not, its like walking barefoot
I agree. Waterproofing is silly except for certain types of endurance or longer hiking slushy snow etc. In general, it just down grades your breathability. I prefer to just slip on some waterproof socks if the conditions call for it. 👍
What size do you wear? If I were to guess, a narrow width 16. Id like to purchase these shoes but would like to find a man who will wear them for me for approximately 6 weeks to properly break them in. I will not wear a shoe that isn’t pre worn and broke in already.
Don't run trails or anything but I got them as I have plantar faciitis issues and these are great everyday shoes for me when I don't want to wear heavy boots etc.
I agree, Merrell Moabs are functionally perfect right out of the box. It actually feels nice when you slip them on. I've never gotten a blister when wearing Merrells. They arent the most durable or cutting edge shoe but they are so damn comfortable.
Hey, great video! I'm looking to hit up more rocky mountain trail hiking here in the dry Colorado Summer next year. Whats your favorite GTX and non GTX option to for shoes/boots to hike in these types of conditions and terrain? I have a set of mid outline GTX salomons, but I am concerned about them making my feet too hot, even with merino wool socks to wick sweat. Thanks for any insight!!
Have these and are great fall hikers for Colorado. Just bought the 2650 Trail Mesh shoes for more spring/summer. I want a quicker drying option for creek crossings in the summer. Will be interesting to see how they compare.
Steven Werth I have some Vasque Juxts also. They are way heavier and don’t flex nearly as good as the Danner. I’d pick the Danner over Vasque in this situation.
@@pssita I agree with you 100% on the weight, I was only referring to the $160 Price Tag on the Danners 2650 , and I thought that the Vasque would be a way better long term cost effective purchase over the Danners . As far as light weight Trail / Running / Hiking Shoes , I personally love my Solomon's, all of mine have held up great. Plus, I Really shouldn't have compared my Vasque to these Danners ,but, $160 seems expensive for these Shoes. the Danners seem like a poor Quality shoe, love the looks though.
I totally dig my pair. I've had mine for almost 2 years. I live in Ohio and do a lot of hiking. These have held up really well. One of the best fitting shoes I've worn for my narrow feet in size 13. I also wear mine to the office (education) in the winter on snowy days. They are still going strong and have withstood solid use both on the trail and around town. One thing I would not do is run/jog around town in these unless being chased by some large suburban carnivore 😆. ymmv
Get you a bottle of plasti dip,and tape off the toe and lower, then spray it on,,it's like a rubbery she'll when dry,it worked for me on another pair of shoes,
I'm getting the brooks ghost but I think something like this might work for me for jogging I tend to randomly wander into the bush the the toe mock toe cap is made from elephant ball sack skin, jk

I have had a pair of these for about 2 years now. I work outside and ride a motorcycle, and these work great for any thing I have thrown at them.

Some of these shoes are waterproof and some are not when on the website you just have to look. The waterproof ones have gtx in the title.

I'm looking at these for a cycling touring shoe. Seems like it should be a pretty good pick.

But odd with durability issues
Totally agree. I tested the Trail 2650 Campo recently and they performed well. They do not have Gore-tex.
As much as I appreciate the look of the suede, I'd gravitate toward one of the synth models in the interest of "quick drying"
I think that painted on toe cap is only on a few models. There are a few other leather models, and it looks like to smooth leather models where there is stitching or a seam right there in the middle of that toe bumper.
What I have read is that they were intentionally made not waterproof as to feedback from hikers not wanting that.

Bro you run like Phoebe from friends.
Bwuaaahaaahaaa!!!!!
Do they dry quite quickly in warm/humid weather?
Lol randomly watching this, and I think I recognize Spruce Mountain trail from where you take the pics on the cliffs? Random if so lol.

Why not get new insoles?
Ive tried replacing them, but the shoe is so low for my feet that i end up having almost no side support
Bought a pair of mesh Nike’s last year. The mesh tore up after a few months and exposed my pinky toe. Really looking for durable shoes now
Spot on review. I have the exact same pair. Great light hiker. I wouldn’t pay $150 but for a little over $100 they are worth it.
I bought the same shoe last year and they supercede Merrell and keen.

Guessing you don’t live in Ireland, western Washington, etc.?
@@laurengraham9325 true 👍
they have adhesive for steel toe work boots to put a plastic cap on the toe ,you may be able to just use the adhesive on the toe of your shoes

Thanks for a great video, what a beautiful area, reminds me of my backyard here in southern WV.
I have the Leadtime for work, they’re great.
I just ordered these because my Soloman hiking shoes finally wore out after a few thousands miles hiking. Sub and Like added. Thanks for posting!
I just bought a pair for $140 at Dicks Sporting Goods.
I just bought these for $58 after shipping. Seems like a good shoe for that price.
Yeah right, where?
@jeffm8882 Ended up being a scam , I got my money back though.
@@Derek8487 Thanks for clarifying.
Did yours not say "Gore Tex" on the side? The ones that I ordered do, so I'm hoping that they are waterproof. I'll be using them for backpacking.

Great review. Completely agree with you on the “almost” a toe cap.
Nice review. I never buy waterproof shoes or boots.
I am a merrel gut personally I find out of the box there is literally no break in period. And the toe cap is actual rubber thanks buddy

I really like the Danners trail shield or shank!
How does it compare to panorama?
Not sure!
I like my vaque juxt bought them since you dropped the video and reviews on them

0:58-1:04 is that spruce mountain?
What about Altama boots?
Lighter doesn’t inspire confidence in a long term shoe’s durability for me lol
Are they true to size??
Yes they are.
How long for break in time?
One day
I'm getting the brooks ghost but I think something like this might work for me for jogging I tend to randomly wander into the bush the the toe mock toe cap is made from elephant ball sack skin, jk
Thanks for the review brotha!
Good review but too long. Low model comes in gtx too...
Nah mine died after 6 months I was pretty disappointed.
Naming a shoe with durability issues after a trail that is graded for horses and leads to zero mountain summits is not a great idea imo.
do these stretch over time
No they don't. They run true to size .
I can't find any info on where they're made which makes me think they're made on China.
He says in the video that they are one of the overseas models.
Nice review. Thanks.
Dress shoes? No bro
