    In this weeks episode of the van build series we go through the steps that it took us to build our shelf over our van seats and install speakers into it. We started by measuring the opening and making a template. The first template ended up not fitting perfectly so we took more detailed measurements and made a second template. From the templates we cut two pieces of birch plywood and cut out speaker holes in them. We then painted both pieces to seal them and got ready to install them. After installing the speakers we placed the top piece of the shelf in the van and got it bolted in. We then installed the bottom piece and screwed them together. The end result was a finished shelf / storage area over our van seats!
    Thanks for following along with our van build! We hope you enjoy the series and get some useful tips and advice from it if you're building out a Sprinter Van for Vanlife! Getting ready to do a build on the same van. Glad to steal some ideas. That overhead panel came out nice. Good idea sandwiching the panels like that.

      They're awesome vans to convert. Just be ready to work on the little things that come with older vehicles. Initially I was going to put trim around the single panel but then I figured sandwiching it would create a cleaner look. Good luck on your conversion!

    Hey man, I've been building a T1N of my own, same wheelbase but mine is a dually and I've already taken a few ideas from your videos for my own build. Thank you so much for your framing video where you actually included the angle degree for the 2x4 framing of the "windows" that saved me a ton of time doing that part. I'm wondering if you've still got your plywood template for the overhead shelf? And if so, if you'd be willing to trace it onto a piece of cardboard and ship it to me? I'll obviously pay for the shipping. I could figure out the cuts myself I'm sure, but you've already done the work so it'd save me probably at least a whole day of work!

      I'm really glad you've been able to use some of the information out of the videos! Unfortunately I had to throw away all my templates for the van. We recently moved out to California from SC and I no longer have a shop so a lot of stuff didn't make the cut for the move. I wish I could be of more help! Best of luck on the conversion and definitely let me know if you have any more questions!

    My understanding is that wood glue does not hold once you've painted a surface so I'm not sure glue would've helped. Looks really nice!

      That is very true. I would have had to glue it instead of putting a coat of polyurethane on it. Thanks so much!

    Lol those little mini T1N paper speakers are absolute garbage 😆 even with upgraded ones they’re only like 4” I think so we were best off using a Portable jbl speaker

      Before we upgraded it was like listening to music in a tin can. It was one of the best changes we made to the van!

      That's what I was thinking of doing as well... where did you mount yours to, and did it end up working out well for you??

      @@goldenadvantures2573 I love your idea! Unfortunately my van has a wall divider between the front and back so I don't know if this shelf idea would work... any other thoughts on a way to mount some better speakers??

    • @goldenadvantures2573
      @goldenadvantures2573  2 роки тому +1

      A lot of people mount them in the doors in the little clipboard holders that are at the bottom of the door. You just have to get shallow mount speakers.

    why didnt you use a big peice of cardboard to make a template

    • @goldenadvantures2573
      @goldenadvantures2573  3 роки тому

      I considered that when making it but decided against it due to the fact that cardboard is not that stiff across such a wide opening. I was also planning to keep all my patterns at the time and wood is more durable to store.

      @@goldenadvantures2573 i meant use cardboard till you were virtually down to the size you needed

    • @goldenadvantures2573
      @goldenadvantures2573  3 роки тому

      I took a lot of measurements and got fairly close pretty quick. I had spare plywood laying around too that was the right size to use and didn’t have any cardboard big enough.
