In this weeks episode we wrap up our van build. We go through the process of putting our Mercury Mosaics tile up in the van. We started out by putting Kerdi Board up then using flexible mastic to stick our tiles to it. We then sealed the tile and grouted it. In this episode we also install our solar panels on the roof. We used compact Renogy 100 watt panels and mounted them to 1x1 aluminum tubing. Then we mounted the aluminum tubing to our proline roof racks that we installed in episode 9. Finally in order to wrap up the build we installed waterproof flooring and shoe mould to finish it off. We upgraded our propane safety and installed it in a sealed box that vents to the outside of the van.It took us right at a year to complete the sprinter van of our dreams. There were many long nights and a lot of friends and family helped us out along the way. We've enjoyed sharing our journey along the way and look forward to showing you around the completed van in our van tour video coming up next!

This is awesome! Any need to use a Kreg Jig on the flooring to connect pieces or would that be an overkill?
Thanks! You could use a Kreg Jig to join all the floor boards together. It would be stronger than the way we did it. The main reason we didn’t was because we knew the foam was going to tie it all together and it would have been more time consuming.
You said that spraying 1/8” was too light, but given the potential for warping exterior metal couldn’t you come back and hit everything with a 2nd layer rather than spraying it on thicker? Also, from your video it appears that unlike most people who run the electrical wires 1st and then spray over the wires, that you didn’t run the electrical 1st? I was thinking that it would be better to spray 1st and then removing channels of the foam if needed to run the wires later so that you could access them more easily if needed. Is this how you did it?
It’s always better to be safe than sorry with spray foam so the second layer is a good approach. As for the wiring we ran conduits for the lights in the ceiling before spraying the foam in. We wanted to be able to access all of the wiring and plumbing if we ever needed to get to it so we didn’t foam any of it in.
Nice job, enjoying the series.
We’re glad you’re enjoying it!
Why'd you build a frame instead of just screwing to the support members?
The main reason was to prevent thermal bridging and condensation. Also we used liquid nail and a nail gun to put up the ship lap and we couldn’t have nailed into the metal.
Wow, a lot of door issues, if you still have that T1N you should check out florida van man, he's the best with these.
We sold it a few years back but I did watch a lot of Florida van man videos when we had it!
Another good, helpful video.😀
Thank you so much for this video - so thorough! I just replaced mine yesterday and your video made it so easy.
We’re glad it helped you out!
Hey Ya’ll!!! I’m wondering how california life is treating you?!! I’m still not built out on my sprinter, but I’m doing some traveling in a T1N chassis based Winnebago View. Hope is by end of summer? But who knows!
Did you heat the tanks up people say to do that .
Yes, we put them in warm water to bring the temperature up.
How has your water heater hold up? I’m thinking of purchasing this one. Would you recommend it?
We sold the van back in 2021 but haven’t heard of any issues from the new owner. The water heater worked great when we used the van. It made the water hot in 10 minutes and had enough for a quick shower.
How has the foam held up these last three years?
We sold the van in 2021 but have kept in touch with the new owner. They’ve had zero issues with it!
Where did you get brass replacement peice
We ordered it off of eBay. I don’t know that the link is still good. I hope this helps!
How is tge tesla battery holding up... have u notice any battery degradation ???
We sold the van over two years ago but the new owner hasn’t mentioned any issues with it.
Did you go closed or open cell?
We used closed cell foam.
Thanks for this series man, ur a legend. I’m about to do the same process on my t1n. Wish me luck
We’re glad you enjoyed the series! If you ever have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out! Best of luck on your T1N!
Great video
Thank you for the kind words!
Loving the van build! We are converting a T1N with almost the exact same layout so this has been great. How was the shower held up over the last few years?
We’re glad you’re enjoying the videos! We used the van for a test year after converting it and it held up great. The people that bought it from us lived in it full time for another year and never reported any issues back to us. I’d say we were pretty satisfied with it!
hi! Thanks for the detailed explanation. Have you had any concerns down the road about potential dangerous gasses created from possible incomplete reaction due to not perfect mixture? That is what spooks me a little...
We’re glad you enjoyed the video! We used the van for an entire year then sold it and it was lived in full time for a little over a year. We haven’t had any adverse effects from using the spray foam nor has the second owner. I hope this helps!
D you use for the conduit?
We just used flexible conduit for residential wiring.
I have a system with two Tesla battery packs. How high could I set the Charge current for these safely? I see you have it at 52 Amps.
Honestly it’s be so long since we completed the van that I’d have to do some research to answer your question accurately.
@@goldenadvantures2573 no worries! Thanks for the great video!
@ 3:50 I did this without removing the frame. You can grind off the pin and replace the track guide while in place. Prop the glass up with a piece of wood. Connect the switch and move the lift arm to an accessible height. Back the lift arm with a piece of wood when grinding and tapping out the pin. Also, a couple of the bolts have some serious loctite holding them in. If you do remove the frame, heat the bolts that won/t break loose to soften the loctite.
That sounds like a pretty good trick to save a few steps! Thanks for the feedback.
Come to the point dude 😂
Enjoy the Toxic Foam... Price, Extra Weight, Gas and all the other problems that comes with it.
What do you think the vans made of? Mud and sticks?
I don't understand the floor joists, why wouldn't you just screw the OSB (I prefer plywood) directly to the metal floor. You referenced house floor joists, they don't have a metal structure to anchor the flooring to. To me, it looks like a lot of extra work for little gain.
You’re probably right about the marginal gain. The main reason we didn’t screw the plywood to the metal floor is that we didn’t want anything penetrating the metal floor. We attached the wooden frame with silicone and screws into the interior ribs of the van. The other thing that did was give us a little extra thickness of spray foam and eliminated any thermal bridging.
Hi! Thanks a lot for this video!! Are you still happy with it a couple of years later now? No problems with moist or anything? Did you cover the walls directly with wood or did you put an extra barrier? Thanks a lot for your response
We’re glad you enjoyed the video! We sold the van two years ago but the second owner was still happy with everything after living full time in it for a year! We put wood directly onto the studs.
Not true. I found the van roof and ribs are made very consistent. I shape my pieces a little different from yours and they all fit like a glove except for the last one near the front. But I only need to trim 1/4" off from the two bottom pieces.
I agree that they’re made consistent. Some vans have tougher lives than others though and may end up having a slight variation over the years.
Do you have a switch for the hot water heater, where you turn on when you want to use it? or do you leave it on all times? Do you turn it off at night? thank you for the video.
We installed an outlet that was switched. If we were not hooked up to shore power we would turn it on about 10 minutes before using it and that was plenty of time to get hot water for a shower. Then we’d turn it off when we were done using hot water. I hope this helps!
@@goldenadvantures2573 this helps. Thank you!
The amount of chem trails going by in the sky is ridiculous. Those are not clouds.
That’s the cleanest t1n I’ve ever saw 😳👍
Thank you for the kind words!
I am about to spray my sprinter van. I am curious how much paint you went through. Do you remember how many gallons of primer and paint you went through?
Hey Andy, we went through about five gallons of primer and we bought four gallons of paint but used about three. I hope this helps you out!
@Golden Advantures this is very helpful. Thank you. Also, great van build and awesome videos.
We’re glad you found the series helpful! Let us know if you have any questions in the future. We’re happy to help.
Dry ice blasting gets spray foam out piece of cake 😊
That’s good to know! I’ve never heard of that before.
Great video
We’re glad you enjoyed the video!
How not to do it
What parts of the process could we have done differently?
@@goldenadvantures2573 haha. Always haters man. I am beginning my van build journey. Thank you for all the content you made.
Glad you are enjoying the videos! Good luck on your van build!
Great video, definitely helped with my install. I know this video is two years old, but wondering if you had any issues with the fuel pump mounted as you have it. The pump is supposed to be mounted at a 15-35 degree angle with the outlet of the pump pointed UP, not down as you've installed it.
We’re glad you found the video helpful! We never had any issues with the heater and I don’t think the second owner of the van has had any yet either.
100% agree with you on saving that space with that said I have a few questions for yah. Since you did the 2x4's flushed along with the spray foam did you encounter any creaking from the shiplap rubbing on the metal. Noticed that you didn't frame the bottom, was looking at your other videos and didn't see anything where you addressed that. did you drill shiplap onto the ribs on the bottom half or what did you do as far as paneling for the bottom half. Appreciate your craftsmanship and all the work that went into editing the videos, excellent resource!
We never had any issues with creaking as the van was moving. The bottom half was covered up by the cabinets and bed so no ship lap was installed below the framing in this video. We’re glad you enjoyed the video and if there’s any other questions you have don’t hesitate to reach out!
Hi, thanks for this video (and the others). I am doing body work around the back door windows and the doors in general on my 140wb T1N. I will need to replace some of the sheet metal on the door. Since you mentioned you did some sheet metal work on yours, what grade and specs of sheet metal did you use. I am not familiar with body work but I do this as a side project. Thanks.
Hey Andre, I don’t remember the exact specifications of the metal we used. I would measure the thickness of the sheet metal on your van and try to match it as closely as possible. For the steel type you can use regular mild steel as long as you’re planning to paint it. I hope this helps and if you have any other questions just let us know!
@@goldenadvantures2573 that's right . I was going measure the thickness with a caliper. Where about did you source the sheet metal ? Thanks
We purchased it from a local metal distributor in South Carolina called Dillon supply.
Dc/dc charger? Is there a video on that?
Is there a video of the dc/dc charger install?!
We didn’t show that part exactly in the build videos. Do you have any particular questions on the install? We’ll try to help out in any way possible!
The mf that used that van to play paintball
So your factory Espar heater by the headlight works but this write up is for an additional heater to heat the cargo area?
That is correct. It’s the air heater version instead of the water heater version that’s installed in the van from the factory.
Did you use the black mounting plate that came with it or is the heater bolted directly to the floor?
I’m pretty sure we bolted it straight to the floor with the rubber gasket in between but it’s been a while since we installed it so I can’t remember 100%.
Glad I found this. Getting ready to step up the solar power technology in my van.
If you need any help along the way don’t be afraid to reach out!
If u didn't have a connection for the coolant heater, can you tap into the main fuel line going up to the engine..
From my research a lot of people advised against doing that. The fuel pump on the engine is very sensitive and from what I read it could cause problems.
The only thing I see wrong with this install is placing the exhaust in the engine bay under the engine, I would think the gases would re circulate back into your van through the intake .otherwise great video tks
I agree with this. Because of it we never ran the van at the same time as the heater. The heat in the van was plenty warm to not need the extra heater running at the same time.
@@goldenadvantures2573 even if u don't run the van ,I would think the gases could still migrate back into your living space ,
We had a carbon monoxide detector and never had an issue with it when we did it.
Hey what wheels and tires do you have? What size? They look great, thanks!
They’re ultra motor sports toil 450 wheels and bfg KO2’s for the tires. They totally transformed the look of the van!
@@goldenadvantures2573 they really look amazing! What size tires?
Here’s a link to our Instagram post that has all the details on it. instagram.com/p/CE8RHlkBzmA/?igshid=MDJmNzVkMjY=
How do you like the air conditioner in this van?
It used a lot of power but definitely kept the van cool even in 110 deg Fahrenheit weather.
@@goldenadvantures2573 oh that's great! How many amp hours would you recommend getting for this air conditioner and also having lights on and charging laptops at the same time?
There’s really no amount of battery that could keep up with this air conditioner. You’d have to have a huge amount of solar, a generator, or a really big alternator on the van to be able to do it.
I have a question... at 26:24 in the video the image shows both hot and cold pex going into a hole in the floor... Why is that? Is the red the center pressure vent on the bosch water heater? And does it actually vent out a LOT of water? Or is it just a steam? I am trying to figure out how best to manage this, and do not want to cut a hole in my floor. And why does the Cold have a vent midstream in the line before the water purifier? I have a SHURflo 182-200 Pre-Pressurized Accumulator Tank inline with my hot water tank... isn't that supposed to manage the pressure from the Bosch tank?
Hey Wendy, the red pex is the over pressure relief for the water heater. The only time anything comes out of that is if the water heater malfunctions. The blue pex going to the outside is the city water connection that is under the van. It looks like a vent but it’s really the water inlet and there is a check valve that keeps it from overflowing the holding tank when hooked up at a campsite. I hope this helps and if you have any more questions just let us know!
Solid golden content man
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Swap out that ANL fuse with an MRBF or Class-T fuse. Either of which have a much much higher AIC rating than the ANL. If that fuse melts closed, you have no protection, and an enormous amount of current flowing from that Tesla Pack. Think big fire that the fire dept. will have a difficult time containing. Hopefully Tesla switches to LFP design for the future...
Would advise you with Tesla Lithium or any Lithium that you use a fuse with a very high AIC rating such as a Class-T fuse or a MRBF (Marine Rated Battery Fuse). Lithium batteries exhibit very low resistance, and thus can produce a lot of current instantaneously. You don't want that fuse to melt and create a short circuit. Major fire risk! That ANL fuse is also a cheap aftermarket.
I agree with you! I ended up swapping out the fuses for class t fuses.
