      Forgive the ignorance here, but if you use a Full frame anamorphic on a super 35 sensor, does this affect the squeeze of what's actually hitting the sensor? In my brain, which could be totally wrong, it seems like you'd be missing a lot of the characteristics an anamorphic lens gives you since only the middle portion of the full image is what's actually landing on the sensor. So all the edge character etc would just not exist in the captured image.
      I guess another question to ask here would be, what is the difference in the image when shooting on a 1.5 or 2x Anamorphic FF lens vs a 1.5 or 2x Anamorphic S35 lens while shooting on a S35 sensor camera?

      @@chrischiles6263 I'm not 100% sure either, but that sounds right to me. You might lose a bit of the characteristics, but I wouldn't think it would lose too much of it. The Orion's were also designed for super 35 cameras too, I believe, although it still covers full-frame.
      I've preordered the new Mercury's as well, so hopefully I can answer your second question soon and see what the differences are.

    Good summary of the Orion experience. I splurged on a refurbished 50mm Orion after trying out the SLR Magic 1.3’s. The SLR Magics tried too hard to be “cinematic” and had too out of control flare. I only liked the 70mm T4 SLR Magic. So I decided that for the money I would rather have one anamorphic that I like instead of a set of anamorphics that I don’t like. I like the image that the Orion 50mm delivers, especially the dimensionality, though it is not as sharp as what you show from the A set. Maybe my refurbished 50mm has some misalignments, despite passing Atlas QA. I use my Orion on an URSE Mini Pro 12k, usually shooting on an 8k anamorphic crop. My next priority would be to get the 32mm Orion.

      Thank you! I thinks that’s a great call. I love the look of these lenses. Not too sure why the 50 wouldn’t be sharp though.

    Thank you for the information, starting to understand anamorphic better now. I actually had the chance to visit their HQ recently. IF you live in sourthen california, you can schedule a visit to demo their lenses out. Really passionate people there + the abundance of information is pretty cool.

    Nice Matt! Wife & I are potentially coming to Maui in January. Where would you recommend staying? In the past we’ve stayed along Kaanapali or right in Lahaina. Open to suggestions. Thanks!

      Nice!! That’s awesome! It all depends on what you’re looking for. Kihei is nice and central to the island if you’re wanting to do a lot of exploring everywhere, but if you want to stay near some good beaches and shops, Kaanapali and Lahaina are great too.

    Neat video, the Orion are definitely super 35 only. Very excited for the full frame Mercury, at half the price of the Orion and a more preferable squeeze imo - I can definitely fit one or two into my budget for branded doc jobs

    good vid - but unless I misunderstood seems to be a misunderstanding - sensor size has nothing to do with the 2 times squeeze since remember these lenses were designed for s35 (or crop sensor), it's the shooting aspect RATIO that matters. For example even if you had the atlas expander that let you shoot on full frame (with a just over a stop loss of light), you would still have the same problem if you were still shooting in 16:9. The h2s (crop sensor) has a 3:2 shooting mode, which is more ideal for 2x squeeze than 16:9. The Arri mini also has no 'problems' - because of its open gate 4:3 ratio not sensor size again s35). Those upcoming Mercurys are 1.5x, which is much much better suited for shooting in 16:9, sensor size irrelevant.

    Did you find that the chromatic aberration was terrible? Shot with a Raptor with a Full set of Orions recently and the chromatic aberration was terrible

    • @WakeUpMatt
      @WakeUpMatt  2 роки тому

      I didn’t find it terrible, but it was definitely pretty noticeable in a few situations. For the most part, I didn’t have any problems though.

      You should try getting your hands on Technovision anamorphic or Panavision G Series anamorphics, the character of these lenses don’t fall apart like the Orions do. You’ll froth.
