The zeiss otus lenses are a masterpiece. I love this lenses never testet the 100mm but got the "trinity" These lenses are opticaly near to perfect, but also they dont lack Character in my opinion. A few millimeters on the focus scale completly changing the apperance of the whole background. These lenses give the Image a quite unique 3d apperance espacialy shot below 2.8 I use other lens Sets from creamy, convenient af super sharp lenses, vintage russian lenses. The most Artistic i feel with the otus and some anamorphics sometimes often combined to show charakters switches their minds, fall asleep, rages... whatever I love them but it takes a lot of time to fully understand the creative potential that this lenses give. But anyway use what you like and what transitions your perspective the best. Cheers
I loved owning the 55, However, after going through all of the Zeiss line ups (Otus, Milvus, classic) I settled on the following: Zeiss 21mm Milvus Zeiss 25mm Classic Zeiss 50mm 1.4 (shot mostly around 3.5-4 to avoid softness) Zeiss 100mm (although its not my favorite, but having a macro feature can make it extra useful) Thats said, the best Zeiss of all time to me is the 135mm Classic APO F2 There is not competition to any lens out there, I have used Leica and Hasselblad, the 135mm is the best lens of all time in my opinion. The otus line up as you said lacked character. Too perfect.
Nice pack 👍 I have collected Classic line. I have 15,35,85,100,135. Definitely the 135 is my favourite- beautiful! Only one missing is 50mm . I don’t want classic, considering milvus or Otus. I still did not make any decision- should try both 😂
25/2 Classic is a thing of beauty, as is the 35/1.4. I think I agree on the 135 APO being the best. Just got an Otus 85, totally different beast. I'll have to see about the perceived lack of character.
I also have the 55 & the 85. Even though I am retired, I still want to be able to sale prints. I hate when I have to tell a customer that a given image will not go bigger than a certain size. I shoot mostly with the Sony A7r IV and the Otis lenses and if I do my job, I never have to apologize.
The Otus line is absolutely stunning. I wish I could afford them, but an amazing alternative is the Milvus line. I chose to get a 7-lens fleet of Milvuses for less than half the price of the 4-lens Otus kit. I'm pleased with the decision but I can also admit the Otuses have an extra touch of 3D pop to them in the rendering; almost an anamorphic quality to them despite being spherical lenses.
I have thought about buy the Zeiss Otus 85mm f/1.4 or 100mm f/1.4, but it is very hard to justify. I already own the Zeiss Milvus 21mm f/2.8, Milvus 25mm f/1.4, Milvus 50mm f/1.4 and Milvus 85mm f/1.4, as well as the Zeiss 135mm f/2, APO Sonnar T, which was my dream lens for many years. The Otus 85mm is optically better, but really not by enough, and you do get slight onioning in the bokah balls, which you do not get with the Milvus. In the end, I see two reasons for buying the Otus lenses, the premium feel in hand, and because they are a lens very few other photographers will own. It is a great status symbol lens.
I am using Zeiss classic and Zeiss Milvus lenses. They are nice to work with because they fit into my work. The Otus lenses are killer lenses. They are perfect. However other lenses with autofocus can be as sharp because every manufacturer has trimmed their lenses to pure sharpness. Distortion and CA is then corrected by software. Otus does not need that and that is the difference. For example, the Sigma 85/1.4 for Sony has birthdefect on the drawingboard but it is much more compact because of those defects. The Otus remains big. In my opinion lenses are nicer that have a certain character. Pure sharpness does not interest me all. Nor those extreme 3d pops of those lenes. I want smooth transistions. F2 lenes are more pleasing to my eyes.
I have been wanting to buy a drone for longest time. I am planning a trip to Maui later this month. I figured that would be perfect to reason to get one and get some great videos and photos. Do you think there are enough places around the island that aren’t restricted for sub 250g drones? If so,Do you have any suggestions on spots? Or
Hey Matt, what are you ending up with ? I own Leica R .... and I'm getting tired of them to be honest. I've liked the result of crisp / FF video with some reallt light diffusion lately. As it gives a more "modern / gentle look" As far as I like the Canon FD or R, their CA and lack of contrast agains windows and backlight in Doco sometimes drives me nuts. Thanks !
I ended up getting a couple lenses from Dulens. They haven’t shipped yet, but everything I’m looking for in a lens, including price point seems to be there. No CA, a bit of bloom, slightly vintage but still sharp. Hopefully they live up to their description. I’ll do a review on them as soon as I get my hands on them!
@@WakeUpMatt Hey Matt, thank for the answer. Yeah I heard about Dulens, but decided to retire my place in the waiting list. Test footage from CVP made clearly realise that it's not what I was looking for after my Leica R. Interesting to see your results ;)
I picked a 55mm Otus second hand … 😮blown away !!! But so heavy Sooo perfect Yes you can have fun with a 50€ lens as a 50mm f/2 pre ai Nikkor for instance ! But as being Zeiss they don’t keep high value on the market I mean, a Leica SL 50 Summilux is still 4000€ on second hand market when the Otus is about 1200€… But the Leica has auto focus… In fact it’s as good as the Leica SL 50 Summilux but without the auto focus and at a fraction of its price 👍
nice vid, ty! i'd been thinking about picking up a set of these, now that they've dropped in price i still may, but i think i'm w you wrt them being too clinical... i have sony GM primes that, now w breathing comp, are about as clean as one could imagine... if only they offered a better manual focusing experience... so i saw a voigtlander 65mm apo macro 1:2 for ~$350 a cpl months back, pulled the trigger and now i can't get over how much i was missing, the physical act of focusing on a lens so well-dampened is downright luxurious... so now I've been thinking about where to go next... I'll have to take a look at the Dulens you rec'd in your recent Ember vid. look rly nice
Thanks so much! It’s definitely tempting now that the prices have dropped significantly. I think they are great when you want that clean, clinical look. They really are great lenses. I’ll be doing a review on the Dulens APO Mini Primes soon! They have a lot of character, but no CA, which is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks again for the love!🤙🏼
I think you're confusing something. These lenses in particular have a lot of character. They are anything but clean. And they are far from perfect. They are perfect in depicting the photo itself. Playing with blur and playing with sharpness. just medium format character. I can't understand why you sold it with all your enthusiasm.
Yes, I agree. The Otus lenses have a lot of character and all the images I shot with them have a unique, difficult to describe, feel or atmosphere to them. I can’t imagine ever selling my Otus set.
