  • Julius Erving commonly known by the nickname Dr. J, is an American retired basketball player who helped popularize a modern style of play that emphasizes leaping and playing above the rim. Erving helped legitimize the American Basketball Association (ABA) and was the best-known player in that league when it merged with the National Basketball Association (NBA) after the 1975-76 season.
Erving won three championships, four Most Valuable Player Awards, and three scoring titles with the ABA's Virginia Squires and New York Nets (now the NBA's Brooklyn Nets) and the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers. He is the sixth-highest scorer in ABA/NBA history with 30,026 points (NBA and ABA combined). He was well known for slam dunking from the free throw line in slam dunk contests and was the only player voted Most Valuable Player in both the ABA and the NBA.
Erving was inducted in 1993 into the Basketball Hall of Fame and was also named to the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time team. In 1994, Erving was named by Sports Illustrated as one of the 40 most important athletes of all time. In 2004, he was inducted into the Nassau County Sports Hall of Fame.
Many consider him one of the most talented players in the history of the NBA; he is widely acknowledged as one of the game's best dunkers. While Connie Hawkins, "Jumping" Johnny Green, Elgin Baylor, Jim Pollard and Gus Johnson performed spectacular dunks before Erving's time, "Dr. J" brought the practice into the mainstream. His signature dunk was the "slam" dunk, since incorporated into the vernacular and basic skill set of the game in the same manner as the "crossover" dribble and the "no look" pass. Before Julius Erving, dunking was a practice most commonly used by the big men (usually standing close to the hoop) to show their brutal strength which was seen as style over substance, even unsportsmanlike, by many purists of the game. However, the way Erving utilized the dunk more as a high-percentage shot made at the end of maneuvers generally starting well away from the basket and not necessarily a "show of force" helped to make the shot an acceptable strategy, especially in trying to avoid a blocked shot. Although the slam dunk is still widely used as a show of power, a method of intimidation and a way to fire up a team (and spectators), Dr. J demonstrated that there can be great artistry and almost balletic style to slamming the ball into the hoop, particularly after a launch several feet from that target.

I think Grant Hill was similar to the Doc, but I feel even more similar to Marques Johnson from the Bucks. An All Around skill game mixed with freakish athleticism!

The Game the Doc Started is still here in the NBA, man how Time Flies, we are here in 2023 and every Move the Doctor dropped back in the 1976’s are still trying to be Perfected by Nowadays NBA Players.
NBA GOAT Without a Doubt but I like how they used 2 Key Words to describe what Dr J did gor the NBA and those 2 Words are Pioneer and Ambassador.
Really means that Julius Erving Built and New NBA as a Pioneer normally does bad he Popularized the NBA by Growing it’s Fan Base just like Ambassadors do.

Been an NBA fan since the 50's. Many many players, but Bill Russell Is the all time greatist. He changed the game. The Dr. is my second choice. Amazing player and person, changed the game. There have been many players in later years, but I will always revere these two. You can talk about Bird and Magic, Kobe, Jordan, Curry, etc., but it's Bill and the Dr.

On the last play of the game Cheeks should have had Dr. J score the last dunk. That would have been more cool!!!

That's what I thought back then , but I think Julius was happy to see Maurice have his moment , along with the rest of the team.

It was the only dunk Mo.ever put down. That I saw. Cheeks was a major part of that team. Maybe. The most underrated point guard ever. Mo deserved that moment. As a Philly fan. Got no problem with that. Doc. Left his mark in that 4th Qtr. He took over.

Dr.J i think everyone tried to copy Dr.J as kids he was the first to have hangtime that out of bounds backboard shot is the greatest move i have ever seen i think from jordan kobe hill dominique all had a julius erving move but vince carter i believe comes closest im a true blue Dr.J fan from his Converse leather high tops or his movie the fish that saved Pittsburgh to his moves and dunks high class on and off till he hit bird a few times while moses held bird i loved it i hated the lakers and celtics back then but finally dawkins to the nets moses the only player who frustrated Jabbar guided sixers to the promised land for me Juliur Dr. J Erving was my hero and the GOAT his championships 2 and his stats in the ABA add alot and should count since it was a merger not a fold. Jordan would not have played his way if not for Dr. J
