That's correct. There are zero known scandals that even remotely involved Annette Funicello. She was exactly the same way in real life as she portrayed herself on TV and in movies.
@@mxj8361 Jet Maypen is so beautiful. Much nicer than Annette. Jet should have been the star of the show. In the end Jet got the hottest, nicest guy so justice was done. I bet that mean Laura will be lying and contriving to get Steve back though.
Walt Disney was such a genious: kind, creative, artistic, inventive and knew just who to have on his programs and movies...what a wonderful genyltleman
No Offense towards Miley but, she's NOTHING compared to Annette! And Annette was always careful about upholding the Disney image not to mention form what I read, that's really the way she was. Kind and wholesome. I saw an interview and she was talking about her autobiography. The editor was surprised that she had no scandals of any and and commented; "Wow! You really are a good & nice person"!
Yeah. I think Aunt Lila's being a little unfair to Annette about who she makes friends with. it's not lie Jet is doing drugs or sleeping around. She just doesn't like her because she's a girl who lives on a farm and is not rich. Some of the best people in the world aren't rich and don't live in mansions.
These scripts were written to be crystal clear to a young audience, with simple plots and just as simple dialogue. Annette knew just what approach to take. She plays it straight and sincere, believing every word she is saying. The temptation always is make fun of this kind of script in some way but she never strays in that direction. That takes confidence in herself and her audience. The result was totally believable make believe.
Nugent was a well-regarded professional, and a favorite of director Charles Lamont. I don't see anything wrong with her acting at all. They were supposed to play syrupy wholesome kids. That came naturally to Ms. Funicello.. Judy had to work at it. From what I hear, Gillespie was replaced by Nugent because Disney felt that her talents were better used for singing and promoting the show on tour. In any case, she was the second-most popular "mouse," behind Funicello.
Judy was playing the part perfectly. She was a straight talking farm girl and told it how it is. Her delivery is going to be slightly different and she nailed it.
There's certainly no doubt this serial was filmed in California, probably in some picturesque neighborhood around L.A. And as some others have pointed out, I believe, the high school is actually the Disney Animation building in Burbank.
I know this came out after Disney's Cinderella, but there's something about Annette that really resembles her. Her mannerisms and way of speaking. If I didn't know better I'd say she was the inspiration.
Thank you soooooooo much for uploading this series for us all to enjoy again. They are so nice and clear too. What memories. Will you be adding episode eleven too? You're the best! Thanks again.
@RayPointer Agreed. One would think someone had an "obligation" to her for some reason. What's most odd about her "characterization" as a friend to Annette is that she comes off a bit "butch," implying a lesbian interest, which was the furthest from anyone's intention here.
I love Annette's friend...she is a nice as Annette and so talented with her voice and dancing...if her aunt only knew about Laura....ohhh but she will find out.. soon enough.....how shallow we can be when we are material minded and not that of a Christian ...cute movie. ...just love it.
Aunt Lila needs a little schooling on "how to accept" wonderful people who are not rich in material wealth but have a rich heart in friendship, kindness, and have an understanding heart.
It got a little dramatic there from 0:42 to 0:59 . The first real mention of a class division in Ashford. In one of the earlier episodes Jet said something about "some of the people" in Ashford in sort of a resentful way. I wonder where in the country Ashford is supposed to be anyway. I'm guessing California, since Uncle Archie says their grandparents settled there, and earlier somebody said Annette was from the "middle west", which rules that region out.
I know these are actors and actresses, but notice how few people are over weight. Even when you look at documentary film from the era, it is striking how few people were obese. This one thing says a lot about how far we have "progressed."
***** The Uncle's actor was in both "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and "The Birds" (actually shown up in a scene where Tippi Hedren visits an apartment building)
Aunt Lila is my favourite character. She has standards and respects the social hierarchy of Ashford and wants the very best for Annette. To me that shows true love.
It must be grapefruit, and its either the appetizer or dessert. Fried chicken is too messy and they can't have Annette looking anything less than perfect.
Notice that no one carries a heavy backpack full of books, pens, paper, etc. Back then everyone carried a binder and a book or two in order to do homework--and some "Peachies." This was an era when teachers taught in the classroom and aimed at developing comprehension and mastery.
@@TheDriftwoodlover Unfortunately, true. My remarks were made in jest and I do recognize the issue with child predators. I do not mean to conflate the two.
The more I see of Judy Nugent, the less I want to. She was effective as a "model." But her acting is so embarrassingly amateurish, one wonders how she managed to be cast and rack up the credits she did. It's a given that Darlene Gillespie would have been a natural for this role on several levels. Besides being able to act, she could sing and dance. This may have been the original plan. But why Darlene was not cast remains a mystery.
I disagree. Nugent nailed the role of Jet. I think she outshone Annette in this. Annette is a one trick pony. Shy, demure, shuffling around, fluttering eyelashes. Jet shows the full range of acting talent. Sweet, cute, fiery, feisty, straight talking, romantic. She completely trashed Funicello in terms of character development and variation.
#childabuse #abuse Micky mouse production seems abusive. Parents should have been able to be on set behind the scenes while their kids act some how ? Inappropriate conduct it seems? Love the old metal lunch boxes. I had a red plaid one in elementary school.
Jet always make me laugh whenever she tries to get the fruit that slips out of the grapefruit 😂
I love watching these episodes. Gotta get up early in the morning but here I am still up watching my 12th episode, lol
Me too! My first and middle names came from two famous actresses. Annette Funicello and Vivian Vance. I'm very proud of my name.
I had forgotten what a snob Aunt Lila is! I remember Sylvia Field best as Martha Wilson on the old Dennis the Menace show.

Aunt Lila is Sylvia Field (Mrs. Wilson) on the Dennis the Menace show back in 1959.
She was so much kinder on Dennis...

At approximately 1:44 when Annette mentions to her Aunt Lila that: "I brought one of the girls home school" her aunt asks her: "Is it Laura or Val?" and Annette told her: "No, it Jett Maypen".

At approximately 2:32 Annette's Aunt Lila tells her that: "Laura's a charming young lady. She comes from a very fine family."
Personally I am thinking that her aunt is brain washing her without having physical evidence that Jett Maypen is no good for her niece.
Please do give me thumbs up if you agree with me on this topic about how Annette's Aunt Lila wants Laura and Val to be her friends and to have zero friendships with Jett Maypen at all. ©®

I love the subtle message about prejudice. They weren't going to tackle anything heavy, but there is a nice conflict.
Gosh, just a few years before Lumpy Rutherford will clash with father Fred.
It might seem syrupy, but they tackle both prejudice and bullying.
There's certainly no doubt this serial was filmed in California, probably in some picturesque neighborhood around L.A. And as some others have pointed out, I believe, the high school is actually the Disney Animation building in Burbank.

Disney's Cinderella came out in 1950 & Cinderella looks a little like Grace Kelly.🤩🤩🤩
I live how amused the uncle is by jet but not the aunt.
Aunt Lila originally started out more welcoming than Uncle Archie. Then by episode 12 it was reversed.
