It did get worse over time so my ski goggles and cloth over my face protected me from it. Crazy

When I was at the Canadian war museum of military history I got to look through a recreation of what it was like to see through a gas mask during a gas attack. Of course it dose not help that I have a lazy eye, but it would have been hard to concentrate fighting a battle with a gas mask on I can easily imagine. Both sight and hearing become a problem.
The first use of Chlorine gas in the western part was on April 22, 1915, in the second Battle of Ypres, the British and French soldiers were convicted surprised and suffered this was also the primary reason why Russia is permanently separate from the alliances for not reporting the use of Chlorine Gas in the eastern part.
Chlorine Gas was initially theorized to be a more effective irritant agent than tear gas at the time, but it was the French that started chemical warfare in WW1 with their failed attempt to utilize tear gas as an offensive agent. Germany, unfortunately for the French, were working on making shell-deliverable agents for years and managed to produce a chemical agent that was able to be used in artillery shells which proved quite effective at the time...
A guy once told me when he was in 6th grade for his science project his dad wanted to do something crazy. They ended up separating chlorine and hydrogen gas from HCl. The 6th grade teacher thought that inhaling the chlorine gas would be safe because it’s used in swimming pools. He ended up violently coughing. The American education system at its finest!
I love how the gas mask is RIGHT on the chest, being much closer to the face in comparison with what's being used today. Being on the left leg. Although, I understand why it was moved to the leg. You are less likely to have your mask damaged if its on your leg.
0:58 Fun Fact: If you look closely at the Canadian Soldiers, 3 of them are equipped with the SMLE. During this time, Canadian soldiers were equipped with Ross Rifles which performed so badly in the muddy trenches, that many Canadian troops would drop their Ross Rifle’s for SMLEs or other guns if they found them. Orders were put out to NOT pick up other weapons, specifically the SMLE. If soldiers were found with SMLE’s, they would be punished. Looks like these soldiers didn’t care! (Also, it is reported that some troops cheered when they heard that the Ross was being taken out of service, and being replaced with the SMLE in 1916.)
Fritz Haber won a Nobel Prize in 1918 for inventing the Haber process which made fertiliser and he also made CHLORINE GAS which his is one of the reasons his wife commit suicide because she couldn’t stand the idea of the weapon, just adding that little anecdote for you to enjoy.
The whole concept of urine-soaked handkerchiefs to protect from the gas came from the Canadian troops. They thought that a wet cloth might filter it out, and used the one liquid they readily had available, urine, to soak their cloths, then held them over their mouth and nose, while their allies fled the trenches. When the German forces came over across No Man's Land, they found, to their shock, armed Canadian soldiers ready to gun them down, instead of an empty trench.
While it is believed that Germany was the first to use chemical warfare agents, it was actually France who, in August 1914, launched bromine ethyl acetate (Fig. 1) tear gas grenades. Meanwhile, the Germans, aware of the allies’ interests in developing chemical weapons, also did the same by strongly developing their chemical industry (especially the dye industry), achieving an ideal situation for offensive chemical development. Just to note. You show the gas being fired in shells in the animation. If I'm not mistaken, at Ypres, the gas was actually deployed through cylinders and hoses on the ground.
Oddly enough, mixing Chlorine and Ammonia yields substance known as Chloramine, having similar effects, which is another reason to be careful when handling chemicals such as household cleaners and even laundry detergent.
