    Hi Kyle, great selection once again!! This was my bread and butter for 32 years. The end that goes into the hammer is called a "snap" they come in dash 3-4 and 5. Thats in 32nd of an inch. A lil helper for ya .....use a piece of rubber preferably from a blow press die or any hard rubber that wont break under pressure. It helps keep all layers tight when squeezing the rivet Drill a hole to the size of your rivet shank in the rubber and put it over the rivet between the work and the bucking bar..At least to set it then take it off and finish the button, for a 3/32 hole and rivet, drill it with a number 40 bit. or 3/32 , dash 4 is .128", and dash 5 is ..156". As a rule for shank length its 1.5 the diameter of your shank should be protruding on the back where the button will be formed.No more tho, it will dump and fall over going oval...no good.Esp if you can see the base of the hole. If so redo. If you lay a rivet down and its flush to the rivet shank thickness as a minimum you can squeak by on that. Were not building the shuttle right? lol....Make jumbly sense? You can also get alot of that stuff on www.yardstore.com/

    yep good tool to have. Mine is a "ATS-3X" it is an actual rivet gun. air hammers are ok but not nearly enough control. you are gonna have smiles on your rivet had and flat buck tails if ya go too hard. cheers! 20 years as a C130 airframe mech.

    Thanks buddy I started out looking for Speedy Rivets and found this video which i learned something about Aircraft rivet installation that is cool because i have a fondness to Airsteam Campers and ive always wondered about replacing some although i must admit in general Airstreams are pretty solid even the older ones what ive found and another reason i like them is they are generally Leak free without water damage inside like so many other campers that have rubber membrane roofs and Butyl taped windows and doors ! Another plus on Airstreams is they usually installed pretty high end components as its not in common to find a 30 plus year old furnace or refrigerator in one that you cant get working with a minor amount of love and tinkering

    I pickup a short stroke light weight air hammer on ebay for about £20 and it sets rivets really well on 60psi. Counter sunk rivets can give a classic stream line look to a project.

    As a career aircraft structures man I would offer some caution here...The gun used in this video is an air hammer, not a rivet gun. It will do the job (unless you're dealing with much bigger/harder rivets), but a rivet gun should be used with aircraft rivets. An air hammer has a faster, less powerful stroke and a rivet could easily be bent, not bucked correctly, or become brittle/unworkable due to excessive (too fast) action at the rivet set end. Rivet guns are a bit more expensive, but if one wants to correctly use solid-shank aircraft rivets, use a rivet gun, not an air hammer. Shameless plug for The Yard Store and Ebay for good used rivet guns.

    • @Thefabforums
      @Thefabforums  7 років тому +1

      This gun can be regulated and has driven 100's rivets with no issues. The guns linked in the description are specific guns made for solid rivets though if that makes you feel better. Thanks for looking out

  • @mikej7476
    @mikej7476 8 років тому +5

    That rivet is an MS20470A(or B) rivet( couldn't see the head good enough to be sure), which is an extremely soft rivet. That was an air hammer you bought not a RIVET GUN, and the tool that goes on the button head of the rivet(yes, it is called a button head rivet), is called a rivet SET, never has it been called a "SNAP" like Steve Jacobs called it, and that "buck", is called a BUCKING BAR which forms the shop head, the button head is also referred to as the Manufactured Head. Just in case you wanted to know the correct names of the tools.

    • @stejac51

      .. thanks "trollin" for your input ... BUT I suggest we might both be correct ... my using the term 'Snap' IS correct if perhaps more often used outside the USA where the term 'Set' is more in use .. outside the US I always heard the term 'SNAP' used ... its probably a hang on from the old world British systems of doing stuff that I grew up with ... (BTW I also am an A&P and a Licensed Aircraft Engineer and have been since 1976) CHEERS

    "anvils" For what it's worth, in the aircraft world, those are called either "sets" or "snaps"

  • @JWard6176
    @JWard6176 7 років тому

    The aluminum ones get bucked pretty easy, but a heads up for people looking into this, pay attention when you buy them. If you get steel or monel rivets, you have to use a tungsten bucking bar, or you will have a very hard time trying to get squeezed.

      Masking tape will work better and cheaper. We usually apply it to the sets themselves and have an abundance of it around when sealing aircraft surfaces.

    • @meangene4229
      @meangene4229 6 років тому +2

      I've bucked 100's of thousands without the need to protect the rivet head. I have used the tape to hold the rivets in place in the individual holes instead of placing them one at a time.

    Not sure why you're calling these aircraft rivets. While they may be used on aircraft, they are used in a lot of other capacities as well. We commonly call these, "semi-tubular rivets". One can also buy a modified c-clamp to squeeze them together; they run about $50.
