It is because of the magnificent music that it takes us back to that touching and mysterious atmosphere of Shenmue, which was so interesting to immerse ourselves in.. 🥲
This game was one of the main reasons for my first adventures in Japan when I was a university student. The sunset crow sounds, the melancholic "Free" exploration bgm in my CD player, and just exploring the back streets in the early 2000's really gave me that Shenmue I feeling. Visiting Yokohama for the first time back then, I noticed the bus designs were exactly like the game since (unlike the designs in Tokyo since both they're in Kanagawa prefecture). Definitely had a nerd-out moment and was hit with massive nostalgia. We bought a place in Yokohama and it became our second home for nearly ten years until moving on from Japan. I did check out the areas in Yokosuka but it's pretty far from Yokohama and downtown Tokyo so I seldom visited there. You get a bad taste of Yokosuka really because of all the American naval guys causing ruckus thinking they're above the law disturbing the peace. The epitome of being meiwaku. Only if I had real-life QTE, I might have stood a chance... With that being said, those shots are spot on! Loved the side-by-side comparisons. I'm curious how you managed to find all the little gems in real Yokosuka! I need to get myself lost in Shenmue again...
Amazing! It's true the place seemed darker and more sinister at night than during the day, just like the game in that sense! But it was certainly a load of fun seeking out all the backstreets and linking them to areas in the game... even if they weren't the exact spots.
I watched this video back when it was first uploaded knowing I was going to Japan for the first time in March 2020. Watching it again now after my visit to both Japan and Dobuita Street, it brings me not only a sense of nostalgia from all my years of playing Shenmue, but feelings of happiness, content, and disbelief that I actually made it there and got to see the place I'd visited so many times over the years on the Dreamcast. We even met several American sailors, one of which I have actually kept in contact with 😂 Wonderful video. Thanks for sharing.
Amazing! So happy to hear you were able to visit and make some contacts! As time goes on, It becomes harder to believe that we actually ever went! Thanks for checking in!
Amazing. These shots were perfectly done. Really interesting to see how modern Yokosuka looked compared to the one in Shenmue. This made me want to boot up the game lol
Don’t forget, though made in 2000, the game’s story is from 1986 I believe. The game was so ahead of it’s time, it’s just incredible. The painstaking job of recreating those areas so perfectly using the technology available at that time is mind blowing. The game itself is a masterpiece for its time. I remember playing it and being in shock. There’s a game called Driver San Francisco that did an unbelievable job of almost being a perfect match for the whole city, but it was using 2010-11 technology, which was obviously light years ahead of 1999-2000 technology.
This is one of the best I’ve seen, the comparisons are so realistic, it’s almost like you found the exact angles of the game to a t, gave me goosebumps. Thank you
the transition with the guy on the bike was godlike! idk if it was done on purpose but i love it lol. i really want to live in the old dobuita from shenmue, it looks like the perfect place to live a peaceful life
It wasn't planned, all the people appeared exactly like the MPC's. It was eerily similar, the longer you're there, the more you feel you're living in the game!
Shenmue has been one of my favorite games since it first came out(maybe even my favorite). After finishing my school in the Navy, they had us fill out a “dream sheet” of where we would like to be stationed. When I saw that Yokosuka was listed, I put that as my first choice.
I’m staying here in Yokosuka on vacation. You matched this with the game really well, and showed many of the best links between Shenmue and the real life Dobuita. I will be showing this to my friends at home so they understand!
Man this has to be the best video made about the comparison between the game locations and and real locations! The use of the "free music" was also a great choice ;) Congratulation on the amazing video! I hope it get the views that it deseves. I hope you guys are excited for Shenmue3!
Thanks so much! We felt it was time to create an up to date Shenmue comparison video (without v.o commentary). Really Appreciate the comments and yes we are totally psyched for Shen 3!
Whoa. Excellent comparison and matching of camera work and color/tones. You really showed just how they were inspired to build those in-game locations. I imagine their version of Yokosuka and Dobuita would feel spot on in terms of character to those real areas thirty years ago.
Thanks a lot! Having been there, it's easy to imagine just how close to the game it would have been 30 years ago! Would love to see some video footage of Yokosuka from back then!
Thank you so much for this. i am now watching the Shenmue Animated series on Crunchyroll. Sooooo many fashbacks for me... amd the animated series stayed true to the game.
Excellent video. I’ve been living in Japan for the last decade, and I moved to Yokohama, which neighbors Yokosuka 4 1/2 years ago. For the past 4 1/2 years, I visit Yokosuka once a season just to keep in touch with my roots as a Shenmue fan and how it inspired me to what to come to Japan. Also, I’m positive you got yourselves the landmark maps. They’re really cool to have. This is a must see for hardcore Shenmue fans. I’m hoping to go to Hong Kong and Guilin one day myself. Regrettably, there’s no arcade to stop by and the arcade in Kawasaki which is based on Kowloon, the setting of disc 3 of Shenmue II on DC, is closing November 17, 2019
Thanks HajimeNoJMo! (Great Name by the way, one of the best Animes/Mangas ever). That's great, If we lived closer we would visit more often too! Regrettably, we didn’t manage to pick up a landmark map as we were so caught up filming and were not 100% sure where to pick one up. We would love to do Shenmue 2 areas at some point In the future, It would be quite interesting to see if any of Shenmue 3 matches up with real life locations also.
never in my life did i think i'd be watching a video and pause to say "AWWW THE LONG STAIRCASE!!!" but man, i just did. and there's actually a military surplus store with a yellow awning! this is so cool!!! thank you for this!!
So well done! I've been to Japan before but never to Yokosuka. My goal in life is to do the Shenmue Pilgrimage and visit all the locations in the games. Thank you for this!
Thanks GamePark! Next time you visit Japan, you have to put Yokosuka on the list! Going there was more surreal than we ever imagined! Almost like visiting a place you grew up! :)
@@GamePark032 Before the world opens up you have time to play the game and count the days you spend in Dobuita, Yokosuka harbour, Hong Kong etc and then spend the same amount of time in those places :)
It looks very similar, but I beat it looked even more similar back in the 90's when they were developing the game. It's good to see than much has changed in this historic community.
Fantastic video! I wish there were more comparison videos of this quality :) I really enjoyed watching this, really makes me want to visit Yokosuka hahahaha
I've been in Yokosuka for almost 3 years now, the difference is literally day and night on Dobuita Street, once the sun starts to set all the local Japanese disappear and the Americans come out to the bars. All the businesses are open during the day and close at night as the bars open up. It's wild to watch it happen. If anyone plans to visit, make it during the day. Otherwise might as well go visit any random bar in America and you'll get the same experience
Even though this game has an overall somberness to it, there is a certain calmness. You don't feel rushed to complete it. It entices you to explore and interact with the worlds inhabitants. There's nothing quite like the first time experiencing this game. Such fond memories. I really couldn't get into the 2nd game unfortunately. It's crazy to think this was originally conceived as a Saturn title. Still it's very impressive to see how much detail they were able to pack into a game 21 years ago. This is a labor of love.
It really is a masterpiece! Playing the game is like visiting the town and visiting the town is like being in the game! If you ever get the chance you should go visit! P.S Give number 2 another try sometime, while it has it's differences to number one, It's an incredible adventure overall, you won't regret it 🌀
This was really cool to see. It still amazes me that they were able to achieve such a high level of detail 20 years ago. Thank you for making this video. Excellent work! 👍
100% It's incredible really! From what It seems, Shen 3 will continue to carry with it the same attention to detail! Guilin comparison next on the list! Thanks for the kind comments! :)
You did an excellent job on these comparative shots. This cemented it for me that next time we go back to Japan we’re going to make sure to visit Dobuita Street.
Beautiful made💗 Brings a tear to me eye on how compared it is to the game and real life♡ You are so lucky to have witness this~ Bless you for creating this 💗💗
Good Question, I think Dobuita represented the kind of quaint and realistic town he grew up in. He specifically wanted somewhere that felt nostalgic, "somewhere that felt like home, he wasn’t interested in building a fictionalized reproduction of Tokyo’s Shibuya" 🙂
Ive loved Shenmue eversince i played it a couple months ago, and the locations i dont know its just when i look at it, they look beautiful but when others look at it, they state its ugly. I guess im more atmospheric meaning that i really dont care what a place looks like, anyway these locations are so peaceful to me and thats what i love about Shenmue. Because the things you could do Shenmue you could also do in real life (Except for beating people but thats a different story) anyway i just wish their were more games like shenmue to be honest.

Honorable mention to True Crime Streets of LA that made an amazing job recreating LA from 2000s

Wow this is incredible work! 👏🏼 thank you for this! Brought back memories

It's incredible how close the game locations resemble the real world locations, but that tobacco shop in particular is unmistakable!
