The first time playing this game, I got pretty excited seeing it was set in Yokosuka because my family was stationed there for 3 years. I was only 10 years old at the time so I couldn't explore a lot but walking through the streets in Shenmue 1 gave me nostalgia. The cramped streets full of small shops were accurate. I remember buying things from the shops and a lot of the shop owners would give me a free eraser or a small toy with my purchases.
You are blessed to have had this experience, well done on making your way there for this trip. Shenmue has left a deep longing in my heart that your videos has helped fill. Thank you.
Great vídeo; very well done. I really love when Shenmue fans share their thoughts and feelings about Shenmue and realise that we have a lot in common and why we love this series so much. Thanks.
Your videos are the best I've ever seen on Shenmue real life locations!!! This was a trip I was planning to make at the beginning of 2017 but wasn't able to go. I'm glad now that I have been able to watch your videos first so that now when I DO go, I won't miss a thing!
You just brought Shenmue to life James!!! There's so many things that happened at the harbor in Shenmue. Can you imagine all the different scenarios just being there?? Better yet you're living it!!! It felt like something spiritual to you right?? This is a great video and interesting insight to Shenmue 1.
I am a super fan of Shenmue, they are part of my life. I went to visit Japan during the last week of July of 2018 and I too felt nostalgia as I walked around the streets on Tokyo. Thank you!
Happy you did this. Saw a video by a fellow who thought Feng Mei was a viable suitor for Ryo, even though she is ridiculously younger. Good to see someone who does't do that weird shipping.
Thanks for this video. Headed back to Tokyo in 10 days, and Yokosuka is definitely on my list. I'll be sure to visit as much of this area as possible. Can't wait.
That Passport menu edit blew my mind :) Another fantastic report. Yeah, it's cool to think that Yu Suzuki and team probably crossed that same footbridge you were on when they did their in-depth research into the area!
It's really interesting to hear your experience with the game (and your trip). I didn't play Shenmue until 2007 as an adult, but I loved the sort of "boring" aspect of it! Wandering around, doing whatever (playing games, buying toys), it was like I'd do in Japan if I had all the time in the world. I disagree though about the harbor: it was my least favorite place in the game. I loved the bustling Dobuita area.
The real life locations they took inspiration of in Shenmue were not all from Yokosuka but it doesn't matter since it's possible to find pretty much exact matches all over Yokosuka/Dobuita.
Quite cheeky how you removed the biggest and main beneficiary of Shenmue's creation and the reason it continues to exist entirely from the intro - SEGA.
@@lordcanti i just finished shenmue 1 yesterday, i liked it a lot and of course ill go for Shenmue 2 but later, ill take a break because i do not want to overshenmue myself
I remember hearing about Shenmue for ages and always being turned off by the marketing for shenmue. They really overrepresented the romantic and virtua fighter undertones. I decided to pick up the HD version for xbox one and I just got through the first one and loved it. Thanks for doing this, cool to see dobuita street.
Great video! I had the pleasure to meet Yu Suzuki this year at GamesCom. Had 30 minutes with him and we talked about Shenmue and what it means to me. He showed me a special trailer for Shenmue 3 and he complimented me for asking things about it only a Shenmue fan could know. If you are interested this is the link. You probalby need Google translate from Dutch to Englisch. Http://frontpage.fok.nl/preview/774723/1/1/50/interview-met-yu-suzuki-over-shenmue-3.html
I cant explain how happy I am to see other people love Shenmue (even more) than I do. It's unreal to me.
same bud! thanks for watching :D
Same here. Makes me feel such longing and sadness to think about the series. Captivating and beautiful as it is.
