Cutting slate hearth flooring w diamond blade circular saw

Although applying tape to the surface is helpful for marking the cut line and reducing chipping, when cutting with a hand-held circular saw, the "finish" side of the material being cut should be placed face down. Since the saw blade is rotating upward at the cutting edge, chipping is very minimal on the underside of the material being cut, but is greatest on the top side. You would have a much cleaner cut edge on the visible side of the tile if it were placed face down.
