- You would think a town called "Friendship" would be really nice. You'd also be wrong! Welcome to the closest you'll ever get in real life to The Hills Have Eyes! This ID REFUSAL gets CRAZY! This is the Town Hall in Friendship, Maine!

The young woman in the green jacket was trying to be helpful. She didn't get what was going on, but that's understandable. This is a town of just over a thousand people, and they've probably not had so much excitement before in their lives. I'm from another small town in Maine, and the police tried to tell me that I couldn't solicit signatures for a recall petition outside the post office once, saying the sidewalk was postal service property. It turned out that no one in the post office was complaining. The complainant was one of the town councilors we were trying to recall. The recall was unsuccessful, but the only one who ran for reelection lost.

Maybe it's a good idea to carry a generic form for record requests so when they refuse to provide paper, you can easily submit one.
That's part of the servants serving citizens. Start small, Find the idiots, real quick.
It’s actually their responsibility to write it down. You can make a records request verbally. That’s usually how it works or they have forms readily available in the lobby.
This is not at all how a foia request works and my guess is this clown knows it. For all you folks saying she should have helped him with this, she is legally prohibited from hand holding or helping with this process. They are not allowed to guide the process at all, and unlike this meathead she will face legal repercussions if she does. A lot of you could use a civics class

But again, you can make a FOIA request verbally to ANY public servant, and it is their responsibility to make sure that request makes it up the chain of command. All he has to do is say it on camera and she will be derelict of duty if she refuses to write it down. Learn the law before you embarrass yourself again.

It seems a little silly, but the bathroom thing is a perfect illustration of government in America. You pay to remodel the bathroom for the employees, but you can't use it. You can go outside like a dog. It's really disgusting.

There's so much wrong about this. This is rural Maine. People dress casually when off the clock. The only person that was on the clock was the woman who was there at the beginning of the video. The rest stopped what they were doing to show up out of the kindness of their hearts to support their friend/coworker who was being harassed. Bubba said he makes 3k a year. Do you really expect the selectmen to be on the clock 9-5 monday-friday for $3k/yr?
Also as far as the toilet goes, they might have been more likely to let you use it if you asked nicely instead of being combative and recording right off the bat when you walked in the building. And for all the ADA comments, do you really think they would make someone in a wheelchair use the porta potty?
She was a woman working alone with no security in the building, and two men go in there with their phones out recording, looking to catch her doing something wrong of course she's going to be on the defense. Did you ever think you could've been making her feel unsafe? Also, in a town of 1k people, almost 800 voters is pretty good. I don't think you'll be winning over this town anytime soon..
Nobody in the town has an issue with the porta potty. Nobody has an issue with the town clerk, treasurer, or selectmen not doing their jobs, or being difficult or unkind. You're creating problems that don't exist, and having all your followers call and harass the town is only going to tie up the phone lines, making it actually difficult for them to do their jobs. They're not monsters, they don't think they're better than anybody else.. they're human beings that deserve respect and kindness.

Last year I was sat in a travel agent working on a round-the-world itinerary with the clerk at a cost of circa £15,000.
I asked if I could use the toilet and was told no. The nearest one was a 15 minute walk away she said. So I told her I'd not be long. Of course I never went back.

There should be a paper from Homeland Security that they need to read, understand, and sign that tells all govermet/city employees that anyone can record them and ask there name and if they call the cops they may be forced to pay for the cops wasted time.

Homeland Security has put out several memos and yet their employees act like it's a terrorist attack if someone with a camera walks by one of their buildings. I agree with you that, in the REAL world of professionals, the memo would work wonders, but you gotta remember we're talking GOVERNMENT employees..... yeahhhh....not so good!

I'm a proud (educated) Friendship resident. My neighbors are hardworking men and women who are kind, humble, help each other, will organize a bake auction for a family in need, and raise money with a parade for the auxiliary ambulance fund so people with medical needs don't have to pay. The only store in our town collects money for heating oil and food assistance. We may come from a small town, but that doesn't make us ignorant or stupid. We also take care of each other - which is why you saw all those people show up when you arrived! They have other jobs, they are trying to provide for their families, and they are braving the elements on the ocean to make a wage. You guys have no idea what we are. If you did, you'd wish you belonged to such an amazing town! Stop judging.

I have no problems with First Amendment Auditors. These people are what a lot of us call "frauditors" because all they do is name call and be rude AF to people trying to make a living. They claim to be making sure that government workers are not stopping people from exercising their First Amendment Rights and that government workers are doing their jobs properly.
Clearly that isn't what they're doing.

Yeah, I honestly believe so. The issue there was the pre-conditioning via telephone by the first lady who they encountered... I would assume he was expecting hostile people and had zero clue of what is happening. Small towns are micro-environments and work completely differently from big towns with proper administrative personnel. I don't get the issue with the bathroom though. This is bad. If people are causing issues using the bathroom, well THAT should be addressed and not exclude everyone from using it because it's the easiest way to "solve the problem". But this takes intelligence, not just "countryside joviality".

Me too... I've lived in the small town environment in a couple of small towns. They mostly seemed quite cordial, and actually like good people.
His biggest problem wasn't asking enough of the right questions first, and understanding the situation for what it was. But, sometimes that's hard to do...
The fact that he was still laughing, and encouraging him to run for office, making a bet, and joking about being called a dog rather than seething over it said a lot to me.
