I really found myself wanting to hate Sleep Token given the whole 'anonymous masked band' schtick and hype, but the music has really won me over. I'm glad the metal scene is at a point where bands that go against the grain like this are praised and able to succeed commercially. As for the song, the mid part solo is reminiscent of Alice In Chains 90s style sound, and the back half of the song has a Pink Floydian-esque prog swing which i really dig. Metal evolution!

Thanks for posting this, Ol. It was my first time hearing them too. I also didn't hate it and really enjoyed some parts of the song. I also value your take on the style choices and song composition. Depending on execution, I really like some "0000 00000" riffs.
To me, it was a very drum focused song. Lots going on in the background and more technical than what the other instruments seemed to be doing.

That's probably because the vocalist is who writes pretty much everything minus the drums, which the drummer does.
I've been enjoying sleep token a lot in the last 3-4 months since I discovered their Hypnosis song, and it's not the kind of metal that I listened to daily, but some of it's songs have made it into my playlists (this one included). Drums imo are on point, and the vocals are amazing, based on their previous works I didn't expect the vocalist to be a screamer, but it was a nice surprise.
All in all probably not a 10/10 band for people who are more into classic metal or the harsher types of metal, but to me this band is pretty flexible, jumps from djent, to metalcore, to pop-ish stuff, which is always a breath of fresh air.

Nice video Ol, In places they remind me of a modern deftones mixed with the guy who does the Doom game music

I don't understand how it's confusing to so many people, but I listen to just about EVERYTHING. I like genre switches and large sound scapes too. I think going into Sleep Token thinking it'll be metal is what turns some people off. They do metal a bit, then jazz a bit, then RnB a bit. It's very " movie score" music or like you said you just listened to an anime.

OMG another metal songs reaction channel starting up! For you newcomers, I highly recommend the songs “Master of Puppets” by Metallica, and “Holy Wars …the Punishment Due” by Megadeth. Or if you’re in for something REALLY heavy, try SLAYER - “Raining Blood.” You have no idea the journey you are about to take my friend 👊😎

@@OlDrakeP.S. for a lesser-known recommendation, you might want to check out the band Evile (just pronounced “evil”) from the UK. They have some pretty cool songs, but fair warning the guitar solos SUCK. Just feel free to skip those

Well... I am an 80's child...I've been listening to everything from Deep Purple , Rainbow, Sabbath- Metallica, Symphony X (and Evile of course), Trivium, Sylosis (yep, I am a Thrash Metal guy) ... but maaaaaaan... don't really know what's the hype here.... and what the actual cluster f**k happened to the pure, natural, brutal and distinctive sound of Metal Music as a whole these days... Damn man...

Kinda funny that you say what happened to metal, because from what you hear I can see a wide range and different types of metal, for which metal classicists would rip you, I mean the jump from deep purple to trivium is not light.
This album specifically is a little different than their previous ones, it's definitely harsher (compare their Alkaline song with Vore which makes it all more obvious) and they are mixing a lot of genres, to me it looks like they are still experimenting and trying to find what they want to do and I have no issues with that, I welcome a fusion band that involves prog with metalcore and other genres, I mean for a while now Electric callboy has been one of my favourite bands, which albeit formulaic, they sounds pretty damn good.

Nothing happened to it. It's still out there and there are a million and one bands that still play that same way. They just aren't huge anymore, because sounds EVOLVE. Just like people, just like tastes, etc.. I like thrash too. You could even say I love it. But I also love R&B, Soul, Jazz, Classical, Funk, Hip-Hop, Trap, Techno, Disco, Country, Bluegrass, Pop, New Wave, Punk, Ska, Reggae, EDM, Irish Folk, Gospel, Neo-Soul, Drum and Bass, Rock-a-Billy, Death, Black Metal, Orchestral and even Opera on occasion.
You're a gatekeeper, bro. "True School". I get it. But Sleep Token is heavy as fuck, when they want to be. And they're everything else in-between and that's what separates them from the pack. The hype is because they sound dope doing it. The best metal bands nowadays are the ones that aren't trying to re-create "Reign in Blood" in order to appease heads your age and mine.
Sleep Token has been fire since they dropped their first album and this being their third, is the one that has blown them up. Rightfully so.

I just thought they were like Tesseract with much less interesting riffs

Sleep Token sounds like my least favourite type of metal mixed with my least favourite type of pop music. I can see why they're popular, but it's really not for me.

It just started doom, then deathcore, then turned into the weekend? I thought it's just weird, it doesn't decide what's it goid to be, overall i don't know for what kind of audience this is targeted at. It's just confusing, its not offensive like you said, so it just doesn't interest me

Yeah not sure what all the hype is about to be honest...definitely not my cup of tea.

Good. Maybe the less people that like them will make my concert tickets cheaper.
