- It's melon harvesting day and we are so excited about how well they all did this year. This is the best year we have ever had trying to grow melons.

My wife and I came across your channel by accident. We love you guys. We're in our 60s and love to garden especially my wife. We have raised beds with tomatoes, squash, cucumbers and purple hull peas. Water melons and cantaloupe next year. Thanks for being there for everyone.
My dad used to put ice cream in his cantaloupe and eat it that way. It is AMAZING! Those melons are above par! So happy for you that your first harvest was above and beyond. Enjoy every bite! Blessings from Louisiana, Missouri!

Great harvest, folks. I'm glad you got some success in growing melons this year!
Try burying the vines to create more feeder roots. I've had great luck when vines start looking like they are struggling, a few shovels of good soil on top of the vines and some water brings them back quickly. Pumpkins and other vines with hairs will grow additional roots on stems just like tomatoes and sunflowers.
Vanilla ice cream and cantaloupe is the BEST way to eat them. I'm 73 and when I was very young girl my Grandpa would bring home fresh cantaloupe and we would sit together eating ice cream scooped into the middle the fruit bowl - such a sweet memory AND delicious treat, still. The combo together is just perfect. Maybe Sarah would like it that way?

What an amazing harvest!! If you see some ole woman creeping in your yard with her cane...DONT SHOOT!!! It’s ME!!! I’m only sniffing your melon patch! Hahahahaha I LOVE the smell of cantaloupe. When picking watermelon, my sweet daddy always said this little diddy:

So he thumped it to see how it sounded, checked for the white underside, and made sure the curl was completely dead.
Pop went to be with Jesus in April at the age of 82. He was a precious, servant hearted man. I miss him terribly.....and the watermelon will never be a sweet without him to share them with.

Oooh that fresh watermelon looks AMAZING! I had major cancer surgery last summer and when I was recovering I had such a huge craving for watermelon and strawberries! I swear I must have eaten 10 large watermelons by myself during my recovery...lol...I still love them and enjoy eating till I'm full. How wonderful it must be to grow your own, and how fresh they must taste eating them directly after picking!
Just look at the Beautiful Melons !!! won't see those in the store. Melons are best right from the Garden. Love how you all share what you do with us. Thank you for taking your time for all of us.

I was slightly taken aback. Such a small thing to ask and there is ALWAYS work to be done, always. After all that work to harvest the fruit a small respite on a summer afternoon with her love would have been a gift from the heart.

Melons freeze fantastically. Save some of that bounty for a delicious summer smoothie in the winter!
A tip handed down for generations is a dash of black pepper on cantaloupe and salt on watermelon. It really enhances the flavors, as if they need it!

I LOVE growing watermelons!!! We have grown huge watermelon patches for the sole purpose of selling them. It's so fun to go to church gatherings with a truck load of them to share and selling them at roadside stands is so fun! My husband says "peddlin" is my calling lol yours look amazing!!

In the 70's, I served cantalope and icecream at Denny's all th time. It sat up in the pie case. Also, the splitting watermelon is the proof that it's ripe. We always were glad when it split with almost nothing but the tip of the knife touching it. In other words, you did everything right.

I've seen lots of gardeners set their fruits on a bed of straw. Might help with splitting because they won't be sitting on an over wet ground. Just an idea guys, hope you enjoy them! 😀
True farmers are not given the respect they are due! You have to nickel and dime your way through life and that is not fair. You deserve so much more for the work you put in and what yield. As a population we need to understand how real food come's to the table.

I have helped so many people pick out watermelons. I tell everyone to look for a dead stem and yellow belly. Also the more scars on the watermelon the sweeter it is. That means the bees were really working on it.

I am 76 years old and when I was a kid my mother and I would eat vanilla ice cream in cantaloupe. Good memories !

My dad loved half a cantaloupe filled with ice cream.
Never heard of it before but cantaloupe and ice cream sounds great.
People keep mentioning cantaloupe and ice cream. But when you grow fruit in the garden you really need to sample the fruit all buy itself at least initially. That's the whole point of growing it yourself. I bit into a vine ripen tomatoes I'd grown and it was a completely new experience. I got taste sensation I never knew tomatoes had. The ones at the supermarket have been gassed and are comparatively devoid of flavor. When people have to add other ingredient its typically a sign of a poor quality product. The additive are there to try and compensate for that bad taste. That's what manufacturing and processing does. Something you should have to do, when you grow it yourself.
We live in Missouri and grew the Alibaba watermelon from Baker Creek and it is awesome.

Kevin looks like he is birthing a baby, ha! I bet it feels like it! In Mexico they cut off the top of one of the ends, use a drill with one of those long bits, drill down into the watermelon turning it into juice, screw in a spigot on the side and drink the watermelon juice. They add Sprite or 7 up with ice and call it watermelon fresca. Congrats I'm happy for y'all ! ~Sidney

Love cantaloupe and watermelon!! Growing 8 varieties watermelon, 2 varieties each of honeydew and cantaloupe. So much = splitting before ripe..grr lol. Fighting the crazy tall grass in them. Your method with the ground cover is our next try next season. Very exciting to see your blessed harvest. Thanks for sharing & God bless 😁👍🙏❤

@@VickiTakacs. yes or you would need to do drip irrigation on top with emitters at the base of each plant.
@@VickiTakacs. I'm using it this year for the first time in Ohio & I have no irrigation.. I watered it twice in 1 month so far. It stays damp under there for a good long time.. we've had rain too but its hands down amazing stuff

Try salt and pepper on the cantaloupe Sarah. The sweet and salty are great together, that is, if you like that sort of thing. I like it on both the cantaloupe and the watermelon.

Good for you for trying every year to taste cantaloupe. Our tastes do change as we age. I am amazed at the things I like now that I hated when I was younger. And yes you are young to me.
My great grandmother grew honeydew melons she lived near Branson MO. Maybe you could try them next year.
Ice cream goes great with cantaloupe I even put cottage cheese in mine. Great video loved growing both cantaloupe and watermelon when I had a garden.
