🐞I Love Ladybugs 🐞I'm also reading that tumeric added to the milk and sprayed on will help kill the pests and fungus, and supposedly not the ladybugs and lacewing. But I would check more into that or test it.
But on another plus milk should keep your tomatoes from getting Blossom end rot. That is what I fight the most on my tomato plants. I usually use dry milk or left over milk and bone meal. If you have any more ideas you have used that would be wonderful. I just have to keep an eye on that all the time.
I'm near St Louis. So howdy neighbor 😊

With the milk solution, use as whole milk or high fat content as possible. The sticky dried fat locks calcium and magnesium on the body of the aphid and they essentially suffocate as they cannot breath and transpire through their body. This also works on spider mites.
Ladybugs and Lacewing are essential, each ladybug can eat 50-100 aphids per day (essentially their entire body mass in aphids each day). Make sure you keep some Dill, Marigolds, Calendula, and Fennel in the greenhouse as well. These are host plants for them and will help you get a continual ecosystem going. Also adding some butterfly host plants is a good idea. (Mason bees, or Leafcutter bees are good but they need to be outside the greenhouse space, the UV filters on greenhouse covers mess with their ability to orient themselves, find their hive/nest and locate things to pollinate. Bee's eyes need full UV to function). Ideally you just put a small planter in the corner, or scatter a couple of small pots in among the others and it'll keep them in the area as they feed, lay eggs, and continue the cycle. Plus you'll attract lady bugs that leave to your greenhouse as they require these plants to survive.

I had a hate for Sparrows, because the are introduced here and I believed they displaced native birds, UNTIL one day I was sitting enjoying a cup of tea, in the backyard, I watched a Sparrow methodically going from bush to bush, cleaning off all the aphids. After that, I revised my planting for bird friendly, put in 2 bird baths, put out seed trays, now I don’t mind having fruit bird pecked and spend more time in the garden enjoying it with the birds.

They are so delightful hopping around the yard eating bugs. I don’t know if you are familiar with them, the male is much more colourful, he usually has 3 or 4 wives, they all build the nests and all feed the young. NEXT time this happens... If you have a vegetable blender... Take 5 cloves of garlic and a 1 inch wedge of onion... throw it in the blender with a quarter filled with water. next a heaping teaspoon of cyan pepper powder, then 1 teaspoon of dawn dish soap, (it is the safest soap on the planet for plants). Then mix it until it has become minced. Then sieve it to put in a spray bottle. THATS IT! Your BEST organic aphids control for ANY greenhouse! Stuff a rag for the top soil before you spray and make sure you spray under the leaves and for 7 days straight for the bugs life cycle and yes I see you have a lot of plants so it will take a bit of time. Get the mites and nematodes if you can next time to avoid spraying and losing bugs that fly away. I commented the type of mites and toads to buy last video. Good Luck folks and I love your garden journey.

Whew! Thought we were going to have to do a benefit concert so we could send Kevin his tomatoes haha. I got a devastating aphid invasion in my greenhouse one year. My grandson saved the day by catching me about 6 adult praying mantids. They cleaned out the aphids and became pretty tame. When I opened up in the morning they would “hide” behind a plant stem and peek at me as I worked. I would hand feed them grasshoppers as it was a plague year. I never wanted to accidentally “harvest” one amongst greens like lettuce or chard where they are hard to see. So I would move them (with gloved hands so I didn’t get spiked if one got upset) to plants where I could see them. In the fall they left me huge healthy oothecae to hatch the next spring. They are really fun friends to help out in the garden. I am amazed at the milk remedy. Good luck!

I have found by accident that aphids love nasturtiums. They seem to prefer them over anything in my garden. I’ve started planting them as sacrificial plants and I locate them where they’re a bit out of sight. I do cut off the stems that are heavily covered in aphids and drown them in soapy water. It seems to be all that’s needed to keep them under control, it takes very little effort on my part and it looks pretty.

I've been using ladybugs and lace wings as a natural predator control in my tomato garden for decades and find it to be the most effective and most beneficial type of control. I don't have a greenhouse so there is nothing to keep them in place. I find once the aphids are eliminated, the majority of the ladybugs move on in search of food. I usually do find nymphs later in the year but living in a climate where we get below zero winters for extended periods of time, I find I have to reorder them every year which can be rather costly. Especially since I don't have a greenhouse. However, it is still worth it to me to spend the money on beneficial insects versus poison. I have been organically gardening for 49 years, one year shy of half a century and would never use chemicals of any kind. Even OMRI/organic pesticides and herbicides are toxic if a beneficial insect lands on the plant while they are still wet. Beneficial insects are the only 100% sure way to guarantee no pollinators are killed. I applaud you for using this method. As for the fogger, I purchased a very inexpensive pergola/umbrella misting system and have it along set up along with my soaker hoses. When I release beneficial insects, I put the misting system on a timer to disperse a light mist for a bit of time each night. The mist is far finer than that of a fogger, which I have used in the past and automated which the fogger is not.

It has been an aphid epidemic here in Missouri! Must be due to how wet it was in May and early June. I recovered enough from sinus surgery last week to get out in my garden here in Columbia and quickly realized that if I didn’t act quickly I was at risk of losing all of my tomato plants. They were oddly only on my tomatoes, not just aphids but whiteflies…I’ve never seen them so thick! I treated with a non-organic insecticide, followed by a neem/Dawn soap mix a couple of days later and I think I’ve got it under control for now. As I was getting my issue under control, my mom in Kansas City called and described a similar plague on her tomatoes so over the weekend I was there helping get their tomatoes under control.
The foggers are a godsend! I’ve been using the superhandy handheld sprayer recommended by the Millennial Gardener for 3 years now and it cuts my spraying time by 90%! Not sure why they were discontinued, but just yesterday I purchased an open box superhandy 3gal backpack fogger from eBay for a great price. It is corded so if the battery on my current fogger ever goes kaput I will have a backup. Surprisingly, I had purchased my cordless fogger on Amazon with battery and charger for much less than the battery alone costs today.
Love your videos and looking forward to adding milk to my arsenal of weapons! Gardening in Missouri is a challenge! Last season was the opposite of this season…cooler and dry for most of May and June meant few diseases and high pollination rates on my tomatoes which led to a truly bumper harvest. I thought I’d reached expert gardener level but turns out it was just the Missouri weather dealing me a rare perfect hand. This year it’s another challenge but I guess that’s part of the fun of it.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience...including the reality of what didn't work!
Right after you posted this video, I tried spraying milk on our aphid covered peppermint. We were concerned the aphids would spread to our tomatoes and other plants. After spraying several times, they were gone. Today I harvested an abundance of peppermint and there are no signs of aphids anywhere in our garden!
You guys are awesome! God bless!

This is great! Thank you. I've used milk as a spray in the orchard for fongus. Very important that it's raw milk. Something I learned from a soil scientist- Aphids don't like sweetness. So sweetening the soil really makes a difference. In a gallon of water mix approximately (I've been doing this for years and don't remember the exact measurements. ) 1 teaspoon molasses, 1 teaspoon azomite (a great source of trace minerals, 1 heaping Table spoon fish emulsion or kelp emulsion, and if you have some, 1/4 teaspoon powdered vitamin C. This can also be used as a foliar spray

So thankful you guys found a solution! It stinks that you had to go through that, but the positive is you learned something new and passed it on to your viewers. Now we have important information that can help us. Have been reading that high nitrogen soil levels can attract the aphids. Maybe adding some dried milk powder (and watering it in) and using phosphorous will help. Just some ideas I have used in the past to help balance not just the soil but the juices flowing through the plant that can help attract bugs or not.
LOVE how you guys work together, it has help us alot! My husband does not care for garden work, but watching you two has helped make a change. Having fresh veggies to munch on from the garden makes a difference too! Like Kevin, he loves his tomatoes, and also green beans straight from the plant! God bless everyone 🥰

My grandfather taught us to plant and we've always done it all natural whereas nowadays they call it organic we've always juice milk for aphids and a few other bugs also we use milk for our fruit trees whenever they have a fungus or any other plants. In the winter to keep our ladybugs and a few other bugs that we want to keep in the greenhouse we keep two roses and a few flower plants that will grow through the winter the aphids seem to like to lay their eggs on these plants. When we do order ladybugs we make sure that they are native to our area they seem to do better we have a fogger but we've never used it to spray the milk thank you it's a great idea

Two years ago I had a huge infestation of aphids in my grow room. Tried the home remedies (probably killed more plants than the aphids). Long story short, lost a good 1/3rd of my plants.
That summer the aphids attacked my tomatoes out in the garden, ordered some lacewing eggs, within 6 weeks aphids completely gone, never to return.
Green lacewings are native to where I am at in WI. Did some research and found lace wings are attracted to yarrow, along with some other plants. Started yarrow from seed in my grow room this spring and planted in and around my tomato bed. I already grow dill, cilantro, fennel and cosmos, hopefully the yarrow directly in the bed will pull more lacewings in.
    APHIDS, not my favorite insect.
    Nice video, Stay Well!!!

Every year my pepper plants get inundated with aphids, so much so that I wasn’t going to plant them anymore but last year, by happy accident, I noticed the ladybugs showed up much earlier in the season thanks to some coriander that had gone to flower among the pepper plants and no aphid problems. Am going to try it again this year (southern hemisphere) to see if it works again. Will remember the milk trick as plan B.
I know how you feel Kevin re the fasting and not being able to snack in the garden at those times.

I have been through two Hudson sprayers. They do work great but blow a lot of wind that knocks small plants over. Now I use an airless paint sprayer. It works great! And you don’t have to carry the 2 gallons of liquid around with you. I enjoy your videos thank you so much!

    • @arockerdude
      @arockerdude 6 місяців тому +2

Also, I have noticed that the aphids always go to the healthiest fastest growing plants where they can get the best drink. Soldier Beatles are also great. One time I had an infestation of aphids on one plant and I noticed that the soldier Beatles were all over the plant flying from leaf leaf. It was amazing. I laid on the ground and watched them work. They would fly from one leaf to the other and rip the aphids off and eat them quickly and then quickly fly to the next leaf. Now I know why they call them Soldier Beatles. Those things ain’t no joke! Aphids are always a problem for me here,in the SF Bay Area when summer hits. Like someone said the ladybugs come along about a week or two later and eventually the soldier Beatles will come. Definitely spraying them off with water to start with is a good idea. Luckily they don’t seem to be able to handle the heat and are not as much as a problem after the temperatures rise. The Hudson Sprayer and the airless sprayer atomize the liquid into tiny droplets that float into every small spot so there’s nowhere for them to hide. But I have found that a good quality hand spray bottle will work also for smaller jobs. I really enjoy the piglet videos. Thanks for your great teamwork!

@LivingTraditionsHomestead Cool! This is the veritable manifestation of white fog it’s a phenomenon that makes the fog very thick milky white and you only have about a meter sightfield.
A trick I use among all solanum plants is planting a specific small flower (marigold) in the same area they work like a pest deterrent.
And it attracts good pollinators and keep the pests away.
Rule of thumb as I’ve been taught. Never have cucumber and tomatoes close. Keep potatoes in a different are so they are not close. Bell pepper and tomatoes works.
Let potatoes and sugarsnaps (or similar lighter beans) co-exist so the stems of the potatoes is what the beans clim on. It’s mutually beneficial, and gives higher yield and less work.
Save eggshells rinse and collect during the winter, dry them and sterilize in the oven, grind them into a powder. When it’s time and you see small tomatoes staring to form sprinkle this around the tomatoes. I usually do that once a week. And then you get much sweeter tomatoes, more and richer harvest. Cause it will keep creating new ones.
And it’s a good way of utilizing resources that would go to waste and let it become the nutrition that the plants need.

You may want to plant marigolds everywhere in the greenhousr and nesturtium and coleus (let them flower) to bring in more pollinators and beneficial insects.
You can also plant onions and garlic to repel pests.
