We explore the significant contributions of Israel Regardie to Western esotericism, focusing on his unique fusion of esoteric and psychological concepts. Regardie, a key figure in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, is renowned for his approach to "psychologisation" in esoteric studies. We dissect this concept through various modes: complementary, terminological, reductive, and idealist, offering a nuanced view of the interplay between psychological and esoteric discourses in his works.
This episode delves into Regardie's influential works, such as "The Tree of Life" and "A Garden of Pomegranates," highlighting his dual role as a magician and psychotherapist. Join us for an academically rich discussion on Regardie's legacy and his sophisticated integration of psychological and esoteric thought.

My original teacher had been one of Israel Regardie's leading pupils. He had a fine Sphinx incense thurible that Regardie had gifted him, which we used for ritual, which had originally been used in Golden Dawn rituals.

My teacher would not like me to reveal his identity, quite understandably, as many of us prefer to remain incognito, but he was referred to by his magical name in one of Regardie's books, much praising a short book he released at that time.

🧠 Thank you for this video. While I don't completely agree some of his analysis, as a person that works in the field of psycho-spiritual analysis and also a practicing Magician I find his work refreshing. I don't think there is enough discussion about the need to do inner work and understand yourself PRIOR to delving into magical work... and the absolute train wreck you can end up in when you don't.

Regardie was never in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. He joined the Stella Matutina a Christianized offshot of the Golden Dawn. Also about the same time Regardie was publishing "The Tree of Life" Eric Graham Howe was publishing works combining western psychology with Eastern & Esoteris themes. Before that in 1925 Roberto Assagioli was publishing his work "Psychosynthsis" & well before that starting around 1916 Gurdjieff was teaching his fourth way, which is probably the most psychological esoteric system ever existing.

🧠I feel like "leaving a brain" is either a sci-fi film thing, or bait for a zombie film...?!? ;)
Thanks very much for this video!
I have encountered the reductive psychologizing approach far too frequently, alas. A certain someone (I will tell you who in some other context, if you like) that is somewhat identified with "academic" paganism once asked me, in my capacity as a Celticist, "why anyone would want to do anything with Celtic myths and paganism: they're not very psychologically advanced, and don't have any opportunities for psychodrama." I had to vehemently disagree, as this is a reason that Irish and Welsh medieval literatures are interesting (i.e. there's no long passages talking about one's feelings or thoughts on things; everyone just does stuff and then talks about it later, and only if they're asked!), but furthermore, the idea that anything in pagan spirituality "needs to" have this reductionistic psychological "value" (a highly subjective term!) entirely misses the point, in my view.
I'm happy to get my psychology where it lives, and my spirituality elsewhere; but I also know it can be useful for people to have connection points between them. I'm not opposed to that; but I am opposed to thinking one is the other, or must be.

The internet is certainly a wonderful thing when it comes to these subjects. Years ago you had to order books without having much of an idea of how useful or interesting they were going to be. Plow your way through a great deal of impressive sounding rhetoric, not really knowing weather any of what you were reading was, you know..real or not.. it used to be much harder to check writers citations, opinions and “facts”(Kenneth Grant etc..) or even to find out very much about the individual writers characters which obviously has a bearing on what they say/think about themselves. Occultism and Esoteric Masonic orders by its/their very nature do seem to attract people that enjoy self dramatisation, cos-play and impressive sounding grades don’t they? I’ve always liked Regardie because of his lack of pomposity and self aggrandisement. Due to the internet I’ve probably learnt as much in the last ten years as I did in the thirty years before that, but books will always be preferable to PDF’s won’t they.
    Bless you Angela.

🧠Marvelous Angela. Israel Regardie psychologisation of esoterism is a key factor of comprehending in a clear, holistic and illustrative way his insight and framework of applying psychology in our daily-basis magick praxis. Even after reading A Garden of Pomegranate you can really appreciate how his language is straight-forwarding and simple in terms of putting the basis of kabbalah in a wider range of alquemical and symbolical references from mythology, hermetism, tarot, and comparative religion. One thing takes you to the other. 😊

🫀🧠 Good one! Seems to me it's just the fashion of the time when these guys wrote that puts a psychological spin on things. Materialism was as powerful as the Church ever was by the time Regardie was born so anyone writing books to be published had to contend with the reigning authority. It just doesn't seem correct to me that everything I experience is just a chemically induced movie playing somewhere inside my skull. Since that time the brains in the heart and gut have been rediscovered outside Tai Chi and Qigong language that's getting better translations in the last 20 years than before that what with most versions of Dao De Jing, Tao Te Ching being done by people who were linguists and poets but not trained in the Chinese martial arts and energy practices with specific instruction encoded in the Lao Tzu. Dan Tian translates most clearly as Field of Energy and in Taoist lore the heart is considered emperor with the head as the scribe and the Shen of the forebrain that hosts the function of self control. Hosts, I don't think our meat suits create this stuff, I think they shape it. It's like writing songs; I didn't make the frequency range nor the qualities of sound that make what we call music because I'm not the One Creator. May-At is the setup even in a forest with no humans watching. If a tree falls in a forest there are scads of observers just in the Kingdom level of perception observing it. The fungus part of the tree sure felt the change. We don't create anything in 3D, we can only move stuff around and change it up; the energy matrix is not my creation.
Materialism to me kept the wish of the monster Church to be in control of everything with no way out but death, and then you'd better have tithed well or you'll go straight to hell. No violent revolution will ever solve this riddle, it just spins the idiot crank another click with another mess to clean up and scads of unquiet ghosts from all the violent deaths and no rituals to send them on their way with a clean exit.

Nice video. Imo Regardie is literally the best thing and, perhaps, the one saving grace of the "Crowleyanity" wing of esotericism. He was Crowley's secretary and so got to see not only the man's high intelligence but also his abusiveness, arrogance, dishonesty, and all-around psychopathology up close. He also was a student of the psychology of Wilhelm Reich, a genius in his own right who was himself damaged. Whereas Crowley could have used years of competent psychological therapy to have not ended up his life as tragically and pathetically as it did (heroine addicted, broke former rich kid begging $ off disciples because he squandered a sizable inheritance over decades feeding his ego and appetites), Reich could have used spirituality of some sort to balance out his life and tamp down his own ego inflations (was a materialist like his mentor Freud and also tried to marry this to Marxist-Leninism, the other bog materialist ideology, in his youth until he grew older and he had to be honest and throw out the Marxism and the later theories of Freud as incompatible with a sincere pursuit of truth and human healing. Nevertheless, he died in prison with a messiah complex and sadly alienated from the mainstream of psychology and medicine). Any way, he had an opportunity to see two damaged and broken geniuses of his times up close and realize each one had something the other lacked.
Regardie's thinking is sound: someone should absolutely ensure their mental and psychological health before embarking on any serious esoteric or spiritual practices. They should also recognize the signs of mental and spiritual instability so they don't follow a spiritual rabbithole all the way down a debt end that can cost one not just money and healthy mental growth but years of one's life wasted on the wrong efforts.
Crowley was highly intelligent but he was unmistakably severely mentally ill. At the least he was a malignant narcissist and at worst an outright psychopath. The fruits of his life were not good ones imo and he should not be placed on any pedestals. And anyone getting into his methods or spiritual ideology or even following any organization founded or influenced by him needs to be prepared to walk away whether or not they got to the collect all the cool esoteric "merit badges" (degrees) they wanted to when ideas are espoused or practices encouraged that can very clearly be seen as products not of Crowley's high intelligence but of his unresolved ego inflation, narcissism, and antisocial, untrustworthy psychology.
