New Jersey Drive is a 1995 crime drama film written and directed by Nick Gomez and executive produced by Spike Lee. The film is about joyriding teenagers in 1990s Newark, New Jersey, then known as the "car theft capital of the world".
Jason (Sharron Corley) is an impoverished youth growing up in the slums of New Jersey. He and his pal Midget (Gabriel Casseus) get their thrills by stealing cars and taking them for joyrides. Eventually, the boys grow more serious about auto theft when they realize they can earn cash by passing off the lifted cars to black-market dealers -- which proves to be a risky way to make a living. Soon Jason finds himself on the wrong side of the law, and makes a dangerous enemy in his neighborhood.
BlackBusters is a podcast focused on reviewing, celebrating, re-living and critiquing Black film. From the movies we all know and love to those hidden gems, there is no movie too big or small to be praised or roasted.

All wrong was stealing cars because the city of Newark shut everything down for the kids the state of New Jersey took over the city of Newark this has nothing to do with Camden the police would beat on us there was no laws for stealing cars it was called at that time Joy riding!!! 1

The Lexus scene with midget is showing the escalation of character. Midget was a man , he went from car theft to jacking . He got stakes . He got to feed his Granny . The lead wasn't ready for that . He was stuck at the joy riding phaze . The rest of the crew moved up to hustling and busting they guns . The story should have built around midget character .

This was Newark,NJ in the early nineties by the time the movie came out it had slowed down but it was what was going on. I know it looks unbelievable but the Young Gs getting a kick out of stealing cars and doing "Donuts"and the hood cheering them on and the cops getting outsmarted, outwitted and just starting to shoot the Young Gs and some lost their lives;was the real. I can feel the frustration in Bigg Jah's face 😂 . I myself, watched the movie when I was 12 and while I enjoyed it, it never stuck with me like Juice, Menace II Society or Clockers or Boyz N da Hood. The characters felt disposable and the dialogue held NO weight. Ya'' forgot to mention the over use of "Nah'm saying" in the dialogue, it was used SO much that everything else go lost in translation for me anyway. Again, enjoyable film but nothing to take home. No high stakes, no redemption arc, no sad ending..just empty like a vacant lot.

Jah sounded offended. That was funny, his frustration. I knew too many dudes that was every goofy ass character in the movie to the T. The movie escaped the Hollywood fell in what y’all are wanting with the writing. Still written well. Wasn’t a lot of dialogue. Cali just having a hard time understanding that particular culture lol.

I definitely understand the idea of potentially gettin lost on what they was tryna do wit this movie but I believe based on the first time I rewatched this an adult a few years back that they gave it a lack of substance in so many categories because in these types of environments when kids are uninformed and pretty ignorant to morals and logical reasoning this is literally how they live theres no remorse no deep thought process behind it they just do just because and they cant think of anything better or smarter to do and lack the faith in themselves to see themselves doing more and the things there doing are so reckless I believe its supposed to fuel that thought of why like what possible reason could they be this reckless and maybe the point is there is no good reason to be that reckless and i think they wanted people to just see it as a sad pointless waist of black lives and how easily it can happen without anyone putting enough concern to it to prevent it from happening i think the whole vibe the movie is supposed to leave people with is like wtf as a way to potentially get people to stray away from that lifestyle or try to help prevent it for those they know or care about based off seeing how much of waste it is and how easily a kid can start out a kid and get into that lifestyle and become stagnant with a mind of not knowing or hoping for anything better and i can say from seeing this type of stuff still happening to this day alot and not even in New Jersey its very possible for this typa sad and pointless aimless scenario to happen in real life and this might be alot to ask of the watcher but i feel they want us to assume they started doin these kinda reckless acts at a way younger age than they were when the story starts cause that’s usually when young people who do this typa stuff start making it much easier for them to get stuck into the mentality of fuck it lets steal a whip

It was Newark, not CMD. But in 90s Newark, car jacking was an epidemic. I agree with yall about the plot holes in the movie, and it lacking a story. When I'm watching it, I like to just think of it as a snapshot of what life was really like. There's no actors, no script, it's just real life

    • @RyanKeels
      @RyanKeels Рік тому

2/5 was a correct score for this. Great snapshot of how Jersey was in the 90s, it made you feel the hopelessness of Jason clique, and I feel like Midget's character made the movie. Negatives: the story was lost, there was more to be desired regarding the lines, and sometimes you had to fill in the blanks regarding things happening in the movie/characters

  • @brettthomas6327

What the difference between Cochise and Preach and Jason and Midget? Both doing stupid stuff for kicks. Growing I knew more Jason's than the opposite. I gave my moms little information on the dumb stuff I was doing, and like Jason it took real consequences for me to change my ways. His crew and having fun was life for him, doing school work and thinking about College was corny for Jason, myself and the homies I was around. Young people in the past and today think their invincible and that's what this movie represents.

The movie is depicting the story of the typical east coast “crash dummies”. They’re typically young and just enjoy the thrill of doing wild shit. Their friends would get locked up, hurt, or killed but it just fuels the urge for the rush.
It also shows the lack of guidance from OGs in the northeast. We definitely had (and still have) OGs that would try to take youngins under their wings but the cities like Newark and NYC are so big and fast paced that so many kids just slip through the gaping cracks.

You guys aren’t from the east coast, so it’s hard for you to understand. It’s Newark, and they Joy Ride on New Jersey Ave which is like Crenshaw to you. Back in the 80’s and 90’s growing up, stealing cars and joyriding was the thing to do. Not for money just for fun like the KIA boys now. Newark had one of the highest rates of car theft in the country. They had task force like the movie, they just arrested them and they back on the streets the same day. This movie was made to highlight the situation of the city and culture, it wasn’t really made to tell a personal story.

So they stole cars to show off the skill to have the wheel. Carjacking and armed robbery is two different things. Both wrong but different. Some people will steal cars all day long, long as nobody is in them. It turns different when somebody is in it beca possibility is, somebody can lose their life in the process which is a greater chance of more jail time versus jus stealing a car, won't get much time for that for a teenager.

What they said about the plot was factz. The plot was wack....But that "Mini Van Scene" really happened. A pregnant young lady died in that incident. Most of that movie was based on what really happened. About 70 %. I'm from Central Ward. Somerset and Spruce for ALL that KNOW. The reason why the movie didn't really Hit for most people is because it wasn't filmed in Newark. But I WILL say that the terrain in Newark is / was similar to Brooklyn. Another thing is that High End cars were stolen......Most of the time it was Honda Accords, Diamantes, BMWs, Lexus, etc...... Spike Lee is not from Newark, so he didn't have the right people to help him write or direct the story. AND Mayor Sharp James did NOT Allow them to Film in Newark, NJ. It was filmed in Brooklyn for the most part.....BUT...Newark looked like Brooklyn back in the dayz.High Rise projects and ALL...across the street from each other. ...My block was surrounded by 5 different housing projects. Scudder Homes, Stella Wright Homes, Hayes Homes, Brick Towers, HiLL Manor, Little Bricks, ...And I lived in Douglas Harrison Homes...All but "Little Bricks" were high rises. ..SO it Passed. But they critiqued the movie too hard without facts. But I Loved the movie because I'm from Newark and I saw how it was. The movie was close....Not spot on....But close.....

I believe the point of the movie was to show how misguided KIDS be in the neighborhood and how it's easy to be wrapped up in those situations with no guidance or no fear for authority

Super fan of these convos ! " But "imma cut you of tho" Whenever you guys talk about crime related movies. It always seems like you are trying to find honorable thieves. "There is no honor amongst thieves" Every thief's lifestyle is centered around disrespect. The "honorable thief" is always fighting a losing battle. when the first rule is to take what is not yours. Then you add the fact that they are kids... Its a cautionary tale. "There is no love " - Big jah lol you soft homie! JK ! I really love these conversations you guys have. The Color Purple review might be my fav !

Has to tap out on this one lol. Thinking way to deep about the actions and motives of delinquents, but the same type of behavior gets praised if it California, NY, ect. Its the same BS, just a different location and flavor.

Not gonna lie im sure theres an artistic purpose to this movie but like yall said being an adult and seeing everything that goes into peoples lives and how hard people work to be able to afford cars and insurance makes it really hard to see any good in this movie. In my city Buffalo NY this problem of stealing cars is happening amongst young people who have recently been stealing Kia's. Specifically the Kia because of how easy it is to steal.

Jason & Midget kinda start falling out over ole girl with the short haircut . That was Midget’s girl back in like JHS but she kinda start feeling Jason as they got older . In deleted scenes she was keeping in contact with him in jail and they alluded to them messing around or feeling each other . Midget noticed all of this.

As always, nicely done! I had never actually heard of this one before- and I'm definitely a movie-lover- so an interesting discussion.
I know you guys are eventually going to get to it, but my Top request of a movie review is for: "Mo Betta Blues" (1990).
That movie meant a lot to me as a young man growing up (and tbh, I was born two years AFTER it released, so I found it LATE), but an underrated gem from Spike Lee. It was Prime Denzel just entering his peak 'cool' and fully stepping into the TOP Black 'leading man' status... plus He had a worthy rival in coolness with Prime Wesley... and just depicted a Black Man as being suave, in control of himself (until he wasn't lol)... and then, it explored jazz music too (almost like a musical). I'm interested in the discussions (and insight from whoever sits-in as the guest) from this one, because it can be just as deep as any of the best movie reviews that you guys have done before.
    Let's Go!
Anyway, Keep up the Great work Jah & Tone!
