The most ground breaking thing about this entire interview to me is that he mentioned AnnenMayKantereit
@Rodrigo Brendan bot
@Desmond Kaiden bot
Noch jemand nach Studio Schmitt hier, weil der Ausschnitt gezeigt wurde?

Jo
He looks like Richard Wagner.
he's being real. u can tell he has gotten to the place where he appreciates the applause but it really doesn't mean anything anymore. he's deep and unapologetic.. I love it.
It’s almost like these Hollywood narcissists are just better than you and I?
He's very nervous
@@pookiewookie7679 no he's not.
I’ve already loved Sean Penn as an actor, the minute he whipped out that smoke my admiration for him elevated 1000%
It was clearly set up though 🤷♂️
Yup!
He did hold my attention. Fascinating personality.
For those who don't know how the german rock band is written. It's AnnenMayKantereit.
Each band member's last name.
I thought it was LickenSieDicken?
Hes so badass he doesnt even bother blowing the smoke back out
Sean Penn in this interview is a mood
This was a joy. Love hearing two intelligent men converse, rare on TV.
He won me over. I began watching the interview prepared to sneer, but he's genuinely passionate about writing and testing his range as an artist. I say good on him.
This had an old-school interview vibe, from the cigarettes to the weary adult conversation.
Shane Kimberlin -Because he's an '80s ICON!!!
i was just thinking am i in some kind of time warp.. how are the snowflakes managing to withstand that second hand smoke XD
outseeker what are you talking about?
nvm i imagine you're just not old enough
outseeker i am 19, i just didnt get how "snowflakes" has to do with anything.. Also make up a word for what ever group your labeling. Like any normal human I'm thinking your trying to talk about snow. ❄ say what you mean mate & mean what you say.
people say this interview was “bizarre,” but i’d have to say it’s the best interview i’ve seen ever.
I think he's friggin awesome. He helped out with rescues after Katrina hit. Then went to Haiti after the earthquakes, stayed for like 3 or 4 years to help rebuild. He's obviously a very compassionate person and has done alot for others.
Josie M... He broke into his exgirlfriends(Madonna) house and tied her to a chair and walked around verbally abusing her for twelve plus hours.
Justin Pipes I forgot about that. They were married actually.
Josie M not to say that people can't change and that we aren't all morally complex creatures but you are right also. Dudes done some good and bad.
Justin Pipes ya but it was Madonna ,sooooo probably was part of their relationship
Justin Pipes Madonna made a statement in 2015 claiming none of it was true and that he had never hit her. I don't know why she would wait soooo long before coming out against the claims if they weren't true, we'll never really know what happened, but she says it didn't.
Fantastic interview. Sean Penn surprises me. Very cool guy.
"I was never disappointed in me!" Awesome...
Haha , This interview was out of the scope of reality. I love it ! Had a old school vibe to it.
Shit yeah - Penn got old. I certainly value and respect old!
N E A K ur dad gay
N E A K it’s kinda creepy hahahahaha 😂😂😂
Sean Penn is my new hero and it's just because he smokes on tv... i thought one gets shot for that
Sad that you only like him because he's a smoker on TV. Even sadder that you had to explain that you thought there was a ban on smoking on TV so harsh that the penalty is death.
Great interview. What a smart, erudite, down to earth actor.
AnnnMayKantereit...did I get this right? Sean Penn never stops to surprise!
AnnenMayKantereit
3:15 für die Studio Schmitt Leute. Gerne!
Kuss♡
This is actually a great interview. One of the best Ive seen in a while.
3:09 If someone is searching for the AnnenMayKantereit reference.
That lawsuits and Netflix bit... Sean Penn is talking about the El Chapo Netflix documentary "The Day I Met El Chapo". He has a lawsuit against Netflix... I'm sure Colbert wasn't aware of this.
firstname lastname What would his complaint in the lawsuit be? That he actions were portrayed accurately and it was extremely unflattering? Can you sue for that?😉
Defamation of character?
Commenting Creatively This is my questions. How could it be defamation if it's an accurate, documented representation of your words, behaviour and actions? I can't figure out how he brought forth a lawsuit.
This article in the The NY Times:
www.nytimes.com/2017/10/19/business/media/sean-penn-fights-with-netflix-over-el-chapo-documentary.html
Leah R I was more asking the OP if that's what it is because I am too lazy to Google it
7:53 Hairdresser at backstage: "Here goes my lifework"
😂😂💀
I find it hard to believe he would let someone do his hair. Maybe a bare minimum to appease the show but I just don't think he cares all that much about it.
That being a good thing. It looks genuine. It fits him. Couldn't take him serious with hair like Steven :)
The Whole country IS on some pretty strong Tea at the moment.
I hate that ayahuasca tea:
andreasmoser.blog/2017/06/24/ayahuasca/
Tolerance hey man pass that bottle over...
Ayahuasca would benefit this country.
Colbert assumed Penn knew what it was, but, obviously, he doesnt.
Nah, i prefer poppy tea. Easy to make and accessible. And growing them is about the easiest thing ever!
Tolerance And they're addicted to the shit😂
1:47 Sean is genuinely affected by the applause, like he's humbly surprised by it.
Maybe he's surprised that he hasn't had to suffer the consequences of the #metoo movement because everyone forgot that he tied Madonna to a chair, beat her with a baseball bat, cut her hair, and orally raped her. He's just in awe that his career never suffered and no one cares and everyone still loves him.
nah misreading dude, I reckon he's embarrassed by it. seems like the whole fake show biz bullshit seems to be tiresome to him.
hes on ambien triš+p as experience ambien tripper i exactly know what the trips are like
A C T O R
When was the last time someone smoked on tv? Pretty bad ass if you ask me
Anthony I don't even remember lol I am enjoying seeing it though for some reason
People give a fuck because smoking and being around smokers has a clear, measured adverse effect on peoples health.
I don't give a shit what you do in your own space but you have no right in this day and age to encroach on other peoples health. Those public smoking laws are there for a reason. For general public health. Not to punish smokers. Pretty fucking fair if you ask me. If you don't like it, grow the fuck up.

"I was never disappointed with me."
- Sean Penn
Sean Penn has always been my favorite actor good to see him on a interview again hopefully he will do one more movie
Pappy Pariah. This is a fine interview. Not every artist is the same, or plays along exactly the same way. He barely smoked that cigarette!
This was the best impersonation of Charlie Sheen and Mitch Hedberg's lovechild I've ever seen.
this is a pretty good observation methinks! :)
He act wild but he knows exactly what he's talking about tho, interesting!? He must be a brilliant person with apparent something going on
I never saw an interview with an author that made me actually want to buy the book till today
I found it on the local bookshop website while listening to the interview lol
WAS IT ANY GOOD ?
What was the other interview you watched
He seems like a honest and genuine guy. He doesn't seem to filter what he said at all.
Sean Penn: '80s ICON!!!
Love child of Keith Richards and Dustin Hoffman?
Debbie Stonum damn, he looks nearly identical to Hoffman if u pause it
Debbie Stonum Haha -spot on, very good!
Debbie Stonum hahaha perfect
Spot on
Wow, this brings back memories. I can't remember the last time a guest kicked back and lit one up on any talkshow.
A truly great actor and director!
Mystic River and I am Sam are two masterpieces
Sean Penn knows "AnnenMayKantereit"? Nice!
he said : great german rockband!
3:15
Stephen, hats off to the wonderfully coherent Sean Penn interview. Loved it.
I don`t know why but I just love the honest and conviction sean displays...wow what a turn on ..I love ya sean ...beautiful
Sean Penn looks like an old pair of jeans I have.
Jennifer Allain ded
Looks like an old pair of shoes I had! I threw them out!
THATS A SEXY PAIR OF JEANS LMAOO
Your a schnook
I like his chill personality 💪
Good actor
yass
I dig it. I like it when celebrities don’t fake it or put on airs. Be real, be off the cuff, it is much more truthful. Penn is a brilliant actor and artist and I’m glad he is still expressing himself, even if it’s not on screen. Colbert, excellent talent you have to hold the reins and keep the interview flowing. 👍
What an interesting conversation. I could listen to them ramble for hours :)
"The girl I fell in love with was going into a movie theatre in the dark with strangers and seeing something that might last forever"
Goddamn that hit me right between the eyes...so well put. Netflix has ruined the movie business in a lot of ways...there's a limitless supply of content and a lot of it is mediocre or crap...it's a dumping ground for two-bit garage directors who fail to get theatrical release nevermind one of the studios to produce what to them obviously just reeks of unmarketable, unoriginal amateurism
This screams pretentiousness. There has always been trite filmmaking (Something Penn isn’t absolved of). If anything, the streaming revolution has democratized filmmaking. Or would you rather go back to the three-studio system where it’s strictly who you know that gets your film made?
@@macstrong1284 I think Marvel has hijacked the studios and made it virtually impossible for other movies to be made in that scale. The current setup is certainly not democratic
Such a FANTASTIC interview 💖
Listening to Penn talk, I can't help but be reminded of Johnny Cash's voice, in Hurt.
This was a great interview, one Letterman's ego would've never allowed to happen. Colbert did a fantastic job here.
Job security for oncologists, hilarious
Pretty sure Sean Penn is my spirit animal
00gsean why do people always repeat the same tired phrases like blank is my spirit animal, as if everyone and their mother hasn't heard that 1001 times already.
Is that a p#ssy in your pic
Awesome interview!
American Spirits... Yes! I always knew Sean and I had something in common!
Does anybody else feel a slight tremble in his voice?
Nandakumar K yeah, I caught that also
Nandakumar K in his hand too, around the time of lighting the cigarette
probably just nerves about doing a stunt like this, even if it was planned/rehearsed
Feel? At points my eyes were watering for some reason..
It is making me SO NERVOUS
Best interview of Sean Penn
Man, I can hear the wind whistling through his ears!
awesome interview!
This segment is hilarious. Some people say that Sean Penn was wasted during this shooting, and he quite possibly was. What is so funny and also very sad, is that even accepting the fact that he WAS wasted during this interview, he still made more sense than the President has during his interviews, simply because Penn has a strong grasp of what he feels and thinks, and knows what the hell he is talking about. Love you, Sean!
“Some people”? My brother in christ, the man himself said he was off the Ambien
Last time I saw someone smoking on a late night show was Joe Pesci on Letterman
Boris Johnson once smoked a cigar on Room 101.
Bette Davis used to light up every time she was on Johnny Carson... Even in her 80's!!
Colbert and Sarah Paulson smoked together for part of her interview, sometime last year. If you want to see some epic Interview Smoking, look for Mike Wallace's interview with Rod Serling, from just before the first Twilight Zone aired. 22 minutes of them both smoking continuously. There must have been an intern popping in with fresh ones while the camera is on the other guy.
John Cougar Mellencamp smoked on Colbert last time he was on...
Johnny Depp spent his entire Inside the Actors Studio interview hand rolling cigarettes or smoking hand-rolled cigarettes.
I love Sean Penn!!! I love the subjects and roles he chooses, they are interesting and intelligent. I like his political views as well.
Loved this interview, seemed authentic and raw not produced or rehearsed. It was also funny lol. When he said there's an overproduction of content and it's hard to keep up. I concur.
He IS a phenomenal actor
#AnneMarieKantereit name dropped by Sean Penn? They'll have a pretty good day I think.
I love his movies, this guy is a legend.
This was beautiful.
I imagine this is what Nathan Fillion looks like after a 2 week bender.
10 out of 10 for the comb over.
This actually is refreshing.
i'm so happy he knows annenmaykantereit :)
he looks like Ian McKellen
stachulec - Ian McKellen looks fresher.
also reminds me of Jeremy Renner
yes! Reminded me of Renner too. Both looks and the... demeanor
Or a white-ish looking Jackie Chan.
I was going to say Sean Bean but yeah Ian McKellen too.
Wtf Sean Penn talking about Annenmaykantereit ^^
I thoroughly enjoyed this.
Dear Sean, u made me come out to myself when i first saw u in milk. u taught me how to feel for others,to fight for others and for something that benefits others; u taught me all that as Harvey Milk. Now u inspire me as Sean Penn. For 11 years i've been in one way or another been influenced by u, hope to meet u onr day sir.
This interview boosted my opinion of Sean Penn.
In what way?
Nancy Mesek I
because he's a whacked out narcissistic asshole?
my savior Trump? He is a revolting asshole, just on the other end of the spectrum from Penn - the end of the spectrum I prefer, but not with Penn. He's a freak.
same
This was meant more of a Charlie Rose venue sort of an interview
GREAT VOICE .
Is the audience laughter real? Hysterical laughter at normal serious conversation. Either piped in or there's 200 mouth breathers watching this live.
Lights up a cigarette thinking it's March 1988!
his voice n body trembles.. he is fighting it tho..
It might be the ambien, but I suspect nerves because he is so invested in the subject. Either way, I still admire him.
Yes could be the Ambien I've had similar experience
I love it when he smiles
I am always dancing to stephen colbert’s theme music at the end. it’s not long enough.
21 Grams is brilliant and he’s excellent in it
He has a lot of great movies and haters gon' hate.
Lorin Stoll I didn’t remember asking you for your opinion
drugs are bad.....mkayyyyy ?!
Totally agree. Too bad Sean as himself is a ratchet crumbled grumpy abusive megalomaniac raisin faced rat.
Ah, the joys of the internet. All the old style mystery gone. \O//
riaa - He's a smart guy, maybe that's why he has haters?
You can tell he’s influenced by the Beat Generation poets.
Sean Penn is a national fucking treasure
Great actor.
Crazy man.
I stared at his hair the entire interview. Is he making fun of Trump...?
Abnormal Wrench he’s on a dope train trump was the least of his worries in this interview lol
Abnormal Wrench What that makes no sense he aint even blonde
So he didn't use an editor
I Love Sean Penn ❤
We were so grateful for your participation in 2020. We being the Family. Never not accepted.
Reminded me a little of Dustin Hoffman
He seems so nervous... but still amazing actor
He's not nervous. He's a hungover alcoholic. As an alcoholic, I can spot this behaviour from a mile away.
He's so real. It's rare to see these days, reminds me of a beat poet. Very Kerouac-esque he is in this interview, cigarette and all.
That was a weird interview! Gotta love Sean.
I like Sean Penn now.
I don't like you, now - Sherman - loser!
Why does Mr. penn always seem scummy and on the edge of insanity or explosiveness. Great actor and interesting , but always 1/2 off of center
excellent!
Can't deny he's an awesome actor.
I'd be on ambian to if I had the biggest drug kingpin thinking I ratted him out to authorities.
didnt johnny carson used to smoke on air
thehomiealan ...everyone used to smoke on air. Everyone.
Yes. Johnny Carson did smoke and the show was not shy to declare the ciggarette company which sponsored it .
Fred Flintstone used to smoke on air
Ken So did Wilma and the Rubbles! (Winstons I believe)
FN awesome!
Great guy👌
