You mention getting "greedy" when reducing the ball bearings you use, might I suggest that you are getting "miserly" or "close-fisted" or acting the cheapskate. I say this, because I like the word miserly (not misery). Thanks for the great videos, and sharing the knowledge.
I've been thinking of building something like this with a 18 V grinder for portability. Your model is somewhat similar to Bosch GRB 14 CE, love it. Brilliant as usual!

Mirock, You're right, -There are numerous grinders on the market from very cheap to the very expensive. -I don't know where you're from, but where I live we have Harbor Freight, which is a "discounters -discounted" retailer. And I can get a grinder to try to build your sander for $10-20. So that's not a bad investment for an invaluable tool. -They also have a good selection of sanding belts, paper etc. -Not 3M quality, but it works... -Once again, thanks for sharing and I look forward to watching your past and future videos. -Mike
Slick idea! Why not releave some wood from the two struts and then you don't have to push in to sand you can lay the tool down on the work for easier and more control. I have a 13mm ribbon sander for the same type of work you are doing and it works great.
That's a great build! Since the grinder is variable speed, perhaps a similar design could also be adapted to make a metal cutting band saw, especially since you hinted a making a sturdier version (though this appears quite adequate)

Hi Mirock, This is a nice project! I like the simple design! two bearings per axle or rotor should be enough but for long term solution they could be made bigger of course. (when placing more bearings than 2 per axle chances are the third or fourth might not do anything) (I have a feeling you know this already :p)
Nice job, though could need some improvement later on like possible dust collector, handle and cover for main wheel. Also with small adjustments this could be made chance angle in the grinder, to get smaller places.
