  • Today I have a sewing technique video for you and I have not shared this specific one of the channel yet! Even though I have been sewing these camp collars since my teens. If you think this is too tricky.... I’d love to motivate you to try it and maybe after seeing this video, you might feel inspired to give it a go! The look is so beautiful and you will find this feature on women's blouses and men’s shirts.
Let’s see how to sew this step by step in detail. You will be able to sew it!
I used the Melody Dolman as a base for this demonstration, though the method you see is modified to my own preferences and sewing experience 😊

Funny. Just as my fingers were poised to heap praise on you, you give us a glimpse into how UA-cam works. Sorry it’s not more watched because you’ve saved me from m-a-d-n-e-s-s. More than once. Haha! So thanks and hopefully more will watch. Now a bone to pick with you for showing the collar per directions. It bums me out that there actually IS a reason for sewing it that way. From the day I watched your video (then smacked myself in the forehead for not thinking of it). I’ll ONLY sew with fabric that works with your facing idea, thank you very much….genius. I’d just finished 2 shirts and a dress with this collar (and the facing finish at shoulders). 2 hours to make each one, except the collar then 2 days on each collar/facing. Aarrrggghhh! Each time I was sure I’d get it right, but noooooooooo. 😛 I think these are much more difficult than collars with stands, but love them more and you for showing me the light! Come on UA-cam, we need these things.

Your videos bring so much rationale to sewing instructions and make a blind processes thoughtful and logical. Now I feel like I understand what I am doing rather than blindly following instructions and hoping for the best.
    So far I learned:
    - cutting collar on the bias for more bending
    - stay stitching can be replaced with a basted interfacing to stabilize the curves
    - interfacing the upper collar
    - size difference between lower and upper collar
    - sewing at an intersection rather than pivoting and then turning neat corners
    - topstitching the collar depends on fabric -- what are some of your other thoughts on what fabrics look good with a top stitch or not?
    - snip in after matching the seams
    - basting to keep things in place before using machine
    - using slip stitching for finishing
do you discuss directional sewing in any of your videos? I keep ending up with seams that are longer on one side than the other :(
I am only working with woven fabric right now, how do I know when I can move to knits in your opinion?

Altho I like these shirts, I much prefer making button up shirts with standard collar and collar stand.

You are so right, that waiting to cut that little snip is the right way to go.

I begged my mom to teach me to sew when I was 12. That was many decades ago. She didn't learn professional tips, but she was able to follow the instructions on a pattern. Being inclined towards champagne tastes I've never been overly pleased with so many end projects I've made as I knew they could have come out more "professional" but decades back all we had were the few select sewing books and the crappy instructions that came with the "big four" pattern companies. (which is why I now LOVE UA-cam).
Thus it is I LOVE and greatly appreciate your videos as you offer those very details I so long desired to allow me to produce the professional looks I always wanted.
I watched this video today because this is the very collar style of a 1980s Vogue pattern blouse I am making for the first time. With that brand, I had expected professional-level instructions, etc, but alas twas not at the offering. (I'm glad I found the pattern second-hand at a cheap price, rather than the ticket price that the brand sells for new).
I'm half temped to take apart what I sewed yesterday, prior to finding this video. But, as I used an "okay" fabric (to test the pattern) I'll use your professional tips on the next one wherein I'll use the gorgeous fabric I saved for once I knew that "all was well" with the pattern.

I know this video is old but I have to say Thank you a million times over for these videos! I am a beginner, and I only bought this pattern because I knew you made this tutorial, plus the one for the Melody Dolman with your shortcut collar with the back facing. You are an awesome teacher and I cannot thank you enough!

I love your attention to getting the highest-quality results - it's the difference between creating something you're proud to wear and something that gets relegated to the back of the wardrobe...

Thank you so much for making videos that teach technique. I have been making my own garments for many, many years, but I always learn something useful from you Katerina. I watch your technique videos even if I am sure I know what you are going to teach, but guess what? I still learn something new! Never stop teaching all your content is 100% fantastic! You are my “go to” to learn. 🙂

Hi Karina I have loved this tutorial so much I have made 6 of the Wardrobe tropical shirts for my husband but I have struggled on occasions with the 2 corners on the collar where you snip, but I think the way you have explained it will be a great help.I have just cut out another one today (Saturday) well you know the saying practice makes perfect well I hope so. Thanks again.

So two years later people, me included are still finding this video really helpful. Thank you. I was finding it hard to visualize all the steps just from written instructions. I had to baste the collar to the front neckline inside the seam allowance before adding the extra layer of the facing and sewing the seam proper. I think it would be tricky if your fabric was fraying badly and you were working with just a 1 cm seam allowance. It's great that you go to so much trouble to make sure we can actually clearly see what you are doing, and using contrasting fabrics really helps with this.

Thank you so much for sharing both your time & experience. I’ve read & reread my instructions 20 zillion times. Your video has demystified this particularly challenging area with such clarity, not only the how but also the why. Thank you thank you soooo much. New subscriber here.

I love this type of collar. I like to sew the 'back' collar by hand rather than edge stitch. I have done this hundreds of times as I make PJs and camp shirts for my grandkids. Thank you for your great tips!

Thank you for the detailed video and for the many helpful tips you gave! I'm about to sew my first collar and I was confused by the limited directions in the pattern. I feel much more confident now to give it a try.
