Aaargh! Thank you!! I've been stuck on a shirt for days unable to make the collar work (self taught and paper patterns seriously confuse me!). I was so close to giving up until I found your video! First collar complete....it's not perfect but it's finished and I understand your process now so next one will be even better. Really appreciate the video!
Thank you! I've been stuck on a pattern with terrible instructions, and your method is so easy to follow! I really appreciate the time you have put into the video.
I make shirts for my husband and always struggle with the collar so decided to UA-cam it. This helped a lot and the collar turned out beautifully. Thank you!
Very neat and tidy. A big 4 children's pj pattern had me clip and press up the center of the collar and it never looked that good. This method is so much better
Thank you soooo much for this tutorial. I am not new to sewing, however, the pattern instructions just didn't explain how to do this type of collar at all! I greatly appreciate your time to teach how to do this. My collar turned out perfect!
Thanks! I’m so glad it helped! I have some sleeve plackets and other collar videos too. So if you’re needing a specific type let me know. I can probably link it.
Thank you! I copied a shirt I own, I had no idea it was a camp collar or how to sew it. After a bit of googling I found your video by chance, and it was incredibly helpful. The first shirt I sort of made it up, it was ok but complicated. The second shirt I made after I found your video was much easier to put together. Thank you again!! I am no longer crying into a bunch of loose bits of fabric. 😅😂
Thank you so much, you have explained that so well. Sewing that type of collar has made me confused more than once, but your way is just wonderful. Thanks again.
i waffled around about the camp shirt style and how to sew them. your method, as always, looks really good. can't wait to incorporate it into my construction. thanks for the video
oh, and, now that i had a good laff... the camp style collar is what i've sewn most, maybe didn't label it camp shirt collar until now. so, i'm really excited to sew it using a predictable, consistent (very un-raye-like) and EFFECTIVE sewing strategy.
Thank you so so much for this! I was working on a dress with this type of collar and the instructions were so sparse and confusing (and I already ended up with a messy test run version trying to make sense of the pattern directions). This was a lifesaver and I shared it with my friends who are working on the same pattern! 💕
Thanks Saremy! I just made one of these using a Butterick pattern and the collar directions were so strange. You make the process much more streamlined.
Very clearly explained, thanks! I'll try it in action this weekend. I wasn't sure if the shoulders should already be closed, I was glad that was easy to see right from the start.
I'm sure you'd only do this if you're confident your fabric won't shift, but watching you sew on the facings without pins made me extremely anxious! Your finished collar looks great though! I can't wait to try this out and update my comment when I do!
Some fabrics I might use pins but mostly I have more control without them. I like using them to pin landmarks or targets. But on curves, it’s easier to ease and control the pieces. Try it sometime!
@@SewSewLive I figured! And maybe I will! At this point I mostly handsew as I find it takes me less time and my work turns out better, but I must admit I've been watching machine sew-ers with envy!
That makes perfect sense. Have you tried the technique that the Friday Pattern Company uses on the Donny shirt where the yoke is treated almost like a back facing? It's pretty cool. No clipping, starting or stopping. The collar is sewn on, the facing/yoke is sewn on, and you're done. Check it out.
You can definitely do that! The Donny has a Notched Collar not a camp style collar. But really similar and you can probably make something similar work. So many ways to get there and you can pick the one that works for you. 🙌🏼
Glad to see this today. I just cut out a Style Arc Monty shirt that has same collar. Planned to sew up tomorrow so will definitely be using this tip! Thanks so much!
So clever…. I’ve made a few camp collar shirts and the pattern method always seems to mean that the “clip” to turn in the seam is right at the junction where the facing ends… very awkward to get neat; your method means that the clip is hidden and makes it much tidier to finish that facing end…. Huge thanks for clever & neat method
Yes exactly! Plus you get to sew the facing to the collar separately so it makes the juncture concealed. The other way is sometimes just not that great. You have to fight to hide the clip! Let me know how it goes and what you think!
Good luck! Just like this commenter said, I’ve moved the clip away from a tricky area! But kept the integrity of sewing it like a traditional camp collar.
Great result and it looks easier to sew as well. When I saw you sewing the ends first which will make it easier to get the end of the collar in the right spot on both sides 💡. My last collar used the burrito meeting with a yoke and I did not have a great result. Looking forward to trying this!
Ive just tried to make a camp collar using a bought pattern. I just couldn't understand it. Just found this video. It looks complicated but Im going to give it a try soon. I have had to adjust most of the front of the blouse was just too small. So fingers crossed. Ty so much for the video, might just save this blouse. ❤❤
Do you recommend trimming the seam allowance to 1/4” as for your stand collar? Also, would you also trim the under collar slightly and/or cut it in 2 pieces on the bias to help the roll - or is this not important where there is no stand?. Ps thank you for your wonderfully clear teaching method! You are my go-to for technical stuff!,
I prefer 1/4”. This pattern has 3/8” so I didn’t bother trimming it. And you can use whatever under collar style you like but yes I’d make sure it’s a little smaller. If you cut it on the bias, make sure it has a seam down the center to stabilize it a bit. There are bias under collars on collars with stands too. I personally think it’s cut in the bias for a few reasons. One is that it’s easier to sew it to the top collar if it’s slightly smaller. I don’t think it helps with the roll but I could be wrong! I think it’s more practical. It could have even started because it helped used smaller pieces of fabric in the factory where they’re cutting hundreds. 🤷🏼♀️ Sometimes the reason is less about the garment and more about efficiency. You know? 😉
@@SewSewLive thank you so much for your detailed response! I am about to begin a 50s style dress for my daughters wedding and so I want to get it’s as perfect as I can!, 😘
Thanks for watching! I only clip a curved seam when it’ll be folded back on itself. If the edge is staying flat and going up in to the collar, it doesn’t need clipping. It’s only when the edge has to fold back on itself and needs to spread out so it’ll lay flat that it needs to be clipped. You’re welcome to clip it though! It won’t hurt anything. And if you think it looks better-clip!
