Today we're going to be taking a look at the Draw-Tite Class III Custom-Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver on our 2014 Audi Q5. Now here's what the hitch is going to look like once we have it installed. It's a really clean, almost factory appearance, and that's because the crosstube's going to be completely hidden behind the bumper. And the only thing we're going to see is the receiver tube and the safety chain sticking out. Since it is a Class III hitch, it's going to offer us that two inch by two inch receiver tube opening, which is really going to give us the widest varieties of accessories that we can use for our hitch.Obviously, everybody knows you can put a ball mount in here, tow a trailer, maybe we want to go down to the lake, take a jet ski or a boat with us, but it's also going to allow us to transport some bikes. If we want to take a bike ride with some friends we can put a bike rack in there, or if we just need to make some room on the inside, we can put a cargo carrier back here and lose some of that gear to the outside of our Audi.Regardless of how we're going to be using our hitch, though, all of our accessories are going to mount to the hitch pin hole here on the side.
Our hitch is going to accept standard 5/8ths pin and clip. Now these are not included with the hitch, but you can find them here at etrailer.com. Now, I know a lot of people are wondering what that secondary hole towards the opening on the receiver tube is, and that's going to be exclusively used for the J-pin stabilization device. And the way this is going to work, we'll take the threaded end, go into the hitch pin hole, and this curved section will go into that secondary hole. We'll take the nut that comes with it, and as we tighten that nut up, it's going to draw that hook into the receiver tube and apply pressure to our accessory, preventing it from rattling around and making that annoying sound when we're driving down the road. But the other nice thing is, is the J-pin is a locking device. So not only is it going to keep it secure inside the receiver tube and cut down the noise, but it's also going to deter theft.
Just keep in mind, this is sold separately, but again, you can find it here at etrailer.com.If you are towing a trailer, we need a spot to hook up our safety chains. We've got a plate style swelling on either side of the receiver tube right below it, which is pretty nice because we're not going to have to worry about any kind of interference with our pin and clip because our chains are going to be slightly lower. And you can see we've got plenty of room to get most size, average hooks on.Even if you have those really large hooks, we should still have plenty of room to get them hooked on and take them off. Obviously, if you're looking for a hitch, you have something that you want to do with it. Again, whether it's towing a trailer, hitting the trails with some bikes or just moving some gear to the outside.
So weight capacity is going to be a pretty important thing to make sure the hitch is going to be up to the task that we put it to.Our hitch is going to be rated at 750 lbs of tongue weight. That's the maximum downward pressure at the end of the receiver tube. Now, that's actually a pretty high weight rating. We'll be able to carry four, five bikes on there, no problem, and really maximize the carrying capacity of those really large cargo carriers. Now, at the same time, it's going to have a 5,000-lb gross trailer weight rating. That's how much our hitch can pull, but that does include the trailer and the load we have on it.
So I always recommend that you double-check your Audi's owner's manual because we don't want to exceed the manufacturer's rating. I'd like to give you a few measurements and these are going to help you out whenever you're looking for accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is going to be right about three and a half inches. And that measurement's going to help you when you're looking at folding accessories, to make sure you have enough room to put them in the upright stored position, and not make contact with the rear bumper. Now from the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening is right about 15 inches, and that measurement is going to help you out when you're looking for a ball mount, so you can find the appropriate rise or drop to match up to your trailer. Now, as far as the installation goes, it is really straightforward. The rear fascia is going to have to come off, but don't worry. There's no special tools required and it's definitely something you can do at home in your garage. And
